Re: “You Had One Job, Jim Tracy

You can tell a constituency by the people they elect, and that section of Tennessee apparently loves it when people other than themselves are held to strict moral standards.

Re: “You Had One Job, Jim Tracy

"Jim Tracy is not a conservative"

To make a statement like this is what is wrong with the state of politics; lies and distortions and a dependency on labels, denying membership to those who we deem unworthy as if our dislike were the determinant. Tracy is a slime ball IMHO, he is a social regressive, pro business charlatan, and without a doubt he is a conservative. What he is not is an obvious hypocrite. Oh I am NOT saying he does not have policies than can be described as hypocritical, he is a conservative after all. But considering the track record of desJarlais and his indisputable lack of character, hiding behind Jesus and demanding forgiveness for his past transgressions that really should deny him a HCP, membership into polite society, not to mention congress. I know not the transgression he may have committed against the author of that statement. Maybe he denied her a job as a speech writer, dissed her cows in an udder judging contest at the county fair, or failed to shot his allotment of Mexicans, I dunno. But he failed the Donna test, as if that really matters!

Re: “You Had One Job, Jim Tracy

Prag, Donna said Jim Tracy is not a conservative and you addressed it by putting the word conservative in quotes. That about explains it. I don't think that either Desjarlais or Tracy are actual conservatives either, in the classic definition that Republicans used to go by when Eisenhower, Howard Baker, heck even Richard Nixon, were the leaders of the Republican party. Conservatism is a principle, like progressivism is a principle, but today's Republicans (like their fanboy trolls that post under names like Zoombah, Yoyo Moi and john) don't have any principles other than if Obama (or Pelosi or Reid) are for it, they are against it, and vice versa. It explains 90% of their vociferous opposition to Obamacare, a program that would have been fully supported if proposed by a Republican president. Don't be fooled, small government and "freedom" are just talking points to this crowd.

I see no down side other than their appearance to liberals is offensive, You have had armored equipment out at SIDCO forever. It's better to have than not have it if needed, No one cares.

Re: “You Had One Job, Jim Tracy

I wonder if Jim Tracy regrets participating in the successful effort to kill verifiable paper ballots in Tennessee? The fact of the matter is, there is no way to know whether or not the vote you cast electronically is actually recorded correctly, and when there is such a close election and a recount would make sense, there is no point. Because all there is to recount are the totals already electronically recorded.

If Russian gangsters and Chinese Communist functionaries can hack into department stores, bank accounts, credit card systems, hospital records or a college's student records, what makes you think that, say, just one voting booth in a place like Grundy County might not be hacked by a liberal zealot, a conservative true believer or just a nerd wanting to get his kicks? Or by a crooked election official? Will the super-dooper high tech experts in Grundy County be able to catch that? Do you want to make the case that they can? Are you really confident of the integrity of our elections?

The threat to our elections is not imposter voting (which almost never happens). It is through the very malicious types I just mentioned. Voter ID won't make your elections safe. Verifiable ballots that can be recounted will.

Look, maybe Desjarlais really won by 38 votes. Or maybe he won by 938 votes. Or maybe Tracy won by 1, 12, 50 or 300 votes. But without a verifiable way to make sure that your vote was cast as you wanted, and to allow for a true recount when an election is this close, we really don't know for sure. Under the system we've got, Desjarlais has won. But whether that is really what happened... well, who knows?

Re: “Reducing Lanes on 51st Avenue is Not the Answer

Many talk like these tank farms can just pick up and move operations into Cockrill Bend like they are moving homes. Given the size of the equipment and complexity of the infrastructure, they are probably talking about a move costing well into 8-digits. Hell, the mayor can't get PSC to budge off their site downtown, do you really think BP and Motiva are going to pack-up after a cute little NIMBY rally? I do feel for the residents of the nations, but the reality is Centennial Boulevard was Centennial Boulevard long before the hipsters started buying lots on Illinois Avenue. Tank farms aren't going anywhere people.

Re: “Reducing Lanes on 51st Avenue is Not the Answer

I normally enjoy your columns, but I have to call you out on this one, Betsy.

"I don't know when, in the history of urban planning, reducing the number of lanes on a main thoroughfare has ever made things safer."

This is a technique in urban and transportation planning known as the road diet. You can read a brief primer at the link below:

http://safety.fhwa.dot.gov/provencounterme…

I am not necessarily suggesting that this technique is appropriate on 51st Avenue, as demographic trends and projections, traffic data, and neighborhood goals must be considered. If the neighborhood was looking to create a safer pedestrian environment and/or encourage heavy truck traffic to access I-40 via Centennial Avenue, this could be a viable solution.

Your blanket dismissal of the idea betrays a lack of even the most basic research into comtemporary best practices in urban planning.

He is, by normal standards of what constitutes a "conservative".

Re: “Reducing Lanes on 51st Avenue is Not the Answer

Is anyone seeing the bigger picture? It was a truck. It was hauling what you live for: fossil fuel for you car, lawn mower, just about everything. What difference would it make to change the lanes of those roads, or force businesses to relocate to placate your NIMBY desires? Maybe next time it will happen at West End and White Bridge? It was a vehicle hauling stuff. They go everywhere. I love how everyone wets themselves imagining a leafy utopia of endless fauna, wide sidewalks, and a brewery on every corner while totally ignoring the underlying mechanisms that create your dream world: Fuel depots, lumber yards, concrete plants. Stick em far away. From where *I* am. The farther away from you means it is closer to someone else, but that ain't your problem, right?

Re: “Will Congress Address Police Militarization?

The key phrase in Rep. Cooper's answer is "appropriate tools". If the military is giving tools to police departments they might legitimately need and have appropriate training to use, then public safety is enhanced. However, if the program includes items like grenade launchers (really?), it's going too far.

Re: “Reducing Lanes on 51st Avenue is Not the Answer

I hate to say it, but a minor league baseball stadium would have made a whole lot more sense in that area. A nighttime use facility with a population that is mostly daytime. A chance to close out a lot of derelict industrial properties. Good access to the bedroom communities. Some retail evening growth to a poorly respected area. Another shot in the arm to nearby Charlotte Pike. Not flood or traffic jam prone. Not too far from TSU and Vandy students.

I may be describing a good location for an amphitheater as well.

...meaning we should pay no more attention than we give to the "CNN pathologist" quoted earlier.

How about waiting for the official results before drawing any conclusions?

The Moore family pathology squad has come under suspicion. One of those guys is not a physician or much less a pathologist. It is a little troop hired to make the shooter look bad.
