Re: “Francis Guess Dies at 69

A patron of the arts, a civic leader. Didn't know him well but every interaction was a positive one.

Really appreciated every opportunity he gave me, my family, and the community at large. We were blessed to have him in Nashville. Truly a special spirit and soul. RA Grant and Family

Re: “A lavish rite of teenage passage opens a window onto Middle Tennessee's Hispanic communities — and their growing economic power

Further you didn't read then story. It talks about the financial strain that the parties put on families. Mr Angel is not rich, he is a landscaper, he contributed $2000 and relatives chipped in the rest.

While I too think its a lot of money to spend on anything, I think we should get out of the habbit of telling people we perceive as poor what to spend money on.People make budget choices all the time and know their finances better than anyone else. Maybe they'll never be able to save up enough to make a dent in the things you mentioned, but can save a few grand to throw a party that seems important to their daughter, community and family.

Re: “Boom Town Chats: What Does the City of Nashville Need?

Okay, which management company currently operating a Nashville charter is fire profit? Next, name all the current vendors for MNPS who are non profit suppliers? How does anyone think all vendors for charters should be non profit while it is okay that MNPS employs for profit vendors? Have you checked the boards of textbook companies?

Re: “Boom Town Chats: What Does the City of Nashville Need?

Charter schools themselves are not for profit by kaw. But managing corporations can be, a d kiting of the law taken advantage of nationwide.

Re: “Looney Turns Down MNPS, Will Remain in Williamson County

Mark that would effectively give the mayor two votes on the board. The mayor and council maintain an influence over the board by budgetary control. No compromise at all on the current method of board selection. Full financial disclosure and detailed at that, should be a minimal requirement for board candidates.

Re: “Open Thread Wants to Know Your Best Farmers Market Finds

With all of the famous "improvements,' mainly subtractions, not additions, there are less choices this year than ever before, and with the weekend summer crowd there to "see" all of the "charming" little vendors and then wait in line to eat, not shop, , it can take a half hour to park. Hardly worth the effort.

Re: “Boom Town Chats: What Does the City of Nashville Need?

"Light rail would be a good idea as long as it does not entirely focus on getting butts to and from downtown. You know, the "for the tourists!" battlecry. "

Light rail is 1st and foremost for commuting purpose. IF tourism benefits, all the more better, but that is NOT the main focus for that mode.

" And we spend more per student than just about anyone else so funding is not the complete issue."

ONLY in the state dynamic. Tennessee and Nashville schools are horrible underfunded. There is a direct correlation between funding and educational results. You are just yelping the standard chestnut of spending too much on education, a morally deficient stand.
And charter school invasions ARE a lurking problem for the future of a totally equal district wide educational experience. Creating a separate but unequal school system is returning us to the 50's, something I remember quite well.
Charters create profit opportunities for handling and supply companies far outside of standard MNPS protocol. I have illustrated this to you over and over, and still you fail to comprehend. THIS is why Elissa Kim was brought to Nashville and her election funding was coordinated. I fear Sharon Gentry has also been compromised.

Re: “Looney Turns Down MNPS, Will Remain in Williamson County

Well, #1 I don't think any bridge is forever burned. Years down the road, all may be forgiven IF the situation is right.

#2 I really doubt the search firm found the best candidates available, nor did they utilize an open search. Because of the strange way the firm was chosen, I am of the mind that certain private criteria may have been presented to the search firm. Hence their product was less than that which would serve MNPS best.

A new search firm is needed, and decisions need to be made by the entire board and NOT strategically sceduled to serve special interests.

Re: “Boom Town Chats: What Does the City of Nashville Need?

I'm with Moost. Light rail or even BRT lite (like Gallatin or Murfreesboro road now where buses are given priority at traffic signals) between the suburbs would make transit much more useful for people not going to and from downtown.

It'd also be great if the greenways could use more rail and interstate right of way like the older existing trails. I'd imagine trails out to Antioch or Bellevue would be popular both with recreational users and commuters.

Re: “Former President Jimmy Carter on a lifetime of service, the Confederate flag and other issues in advance of his Nashville book signing

The Ford v Carter Election was the last one in Amerika where we had a choice between two equally truly good men.
I think Obama wants to do 'real' good, but he does not have a 'deep enough bench' to do so, in that there are not enough good people around him to make it happen. Amerika has been so corrupted by corporate greed and increasing corporate tyranny, that middle class people will never be freer or more economically secure, ever again, than we are this year. It is a different world than the Ford-Carter days. We are on the slide to end of empire, an empire we should have never made, and the fatal error goes back to the Presidency after the election loss of Carter.

Re: “Looney Turns Down MNPS, Will Remain in Williamson County

Jeremy Kane won't be the next mayor. He also won't be the next superintendent for two reasons.

As you said, he has a lack of experience with running public schools. A district like Metro is not the place to learn on the job.

The second reason is that he is associated too strongly with charter schools. As polarized as the school board is, they don't need to select someone with a perceived pro-charter agenda.

Re: “Madeline, East Nashville's Laundry Cafe, Shuts Down for Good

Yes, I have been. It felt totally phoney and lame in every way, as most commenters on previous threads and this one seem to agree.

Yes, they clearly know how to get publicity, I'll grant you that, but a neighborhood bar or great restaurant they are not. Maybe they can open a Rain-Forest Cafe or Dave and Busters in the neighborhood too. No doubt they could find one person to defend it.

Re: “Madeline, East Nashville's Laundry Cafe, Shuts Down for Good

It's sad to see another great local hangout, such as Madeline's, have to close their doors, but there's certainly no need, NOTHANKS, to disparage other local restaurateur's concept &/or the Scene's decision to write about them. I'm sure you've been to Embers Ski Lodge to have such a negative view of it, but if not, I suggest you go & check it out! They have a great vibe, incredible drinks, and the most delicious salmon spread this side of the mason dixon. I hope Madeline's owners & employees can reopen another awesome concept soon that will survive the increasingly competitive marketplace of Nashville. Clearly, the owners of Embers understand what it takes to increase publicity & run a successful business, as they've done with their other neighborhood restaurant, Mafioza's, over the past 10+ yrs.
