I love the original Chappy's and Ive been recently and I loved it. I dont see a Po Boys or Cracker Barrel type place working there at all. I cant believe they did that. I wonder what i cost him to put the restaurant back in shape.
Who needs an 'edit button' for the difference between wood and would? This thread is phenomenal. The show was phenomenal. I have never eaten at Chappy's, and still won't. I guess I'll never know the truth.
Watching it now, and regardless of anyone's opinion of the food, that walk-in was absolutely foul. Ridiculous.
I had a great shake at Bobby's downtown location.
Unrelated to shakes- Gifford's Bacon is the best bacon I've ever had. Ever.
LOL I saw that after I posted , no edit button :)
Chappy's is back to its original quality food.Thank heavens! We have eaten there many times since it opened. We even celebrated our fiftieth wedding anniversary there with a large group of family from all over the country. The food and service was spectacular. We and many of our guests have eaten at restaurants coast to coast and across the world. They know good food! I'm glad to look forward to going again soon. Bernie and Mary
"Howdy ya'll and welcome to Po'Folks!!"
"Barn would"..... I can't stop laughing.....
Wow, I must have gone on the one good night that he's had since he's been open based on all the other comments. I went about a year ago via a Groupon offer and had a really good meal. The butter thing, I didn't really get but our meal was really good. I honestly can't remember what I had but my wife had the bbq shrimp and loved it. We both commented on how good it was and were glad that we had tried it and promised to give it another try. We haven't yet but look forward to it.
I've also been at several caterred events at my daughter's school that he's done and they were all good, too.
The spiked shakes at Burger Republic are amazing, if you want a milkshake with a kick. The Vanilla Maple Bourbon is my favorite. My kids swear by the 'normal' shakes, especially the Maple Bacon and the White Chocolate Strawberry shakes.
We also like the shakes at The Pharmacy.
I didn't get the feeling from the review that Carrington does either.
I guess if you're gonna go down you might as well go down swinging and slinging what you know. But honestly, he's lasted a lot longer than I ever figured he would, especially given the way he seems to hang his toque on that BUTTER. That's the oddest thing ever! And honestly, every time I've been it was the best thing they served. Certainly the best value...
FWIW, my meager understanding of the etymology of 'gastropub' had to do with the epiphany someone running a pub in England had in the 80s-90s, to go beyond being the butt of all food jokes and actually serve food worth eating on its own and not just as a post-session beer soak. So there were pubs and then there were gastropubs, and the latter meant the fish & chips would cost about double what they charged in the former, but they probably weren't out of a freezer bag and the malt vinegar would be in a nice serving bottle and not the stock bottle still with its label, etc.. Then they got into sourcing "heirloom" varieties of local food (produce and meat), and off they went waiting for their turn in Kitchen Nightmares when they got too fancy or lost their way with rarebit that took all day to fix. Sadly, a lot of their pint prices went up with the food costs, it seemed. (Some of us still just want a fresh 'best bitter' option on the hand pull with clean lines and a nice selection of Walker's crisps for later.) But that was the gastropub's invention. What it means here seems to be whatever you want, but almost always that extra tick up in prices is a given.
A Pinky Tuscadero shake from Bobbie's is my heading-to-Publix summer tradition. That plus a large fry is seriously a perfect meal!
J. Alexander's used to have an amazing shake that billowed up like a cloud out of the glass. Can someone who's been there recently verify if that is still the case?
A Maggie Moo Cinnamoo milkshake is out of this world.
Seconded on Fat Mo's and Elliston Place (the only reliable thing on the menu, in my experience).
Love the malts at Reeves-Sain Pharmacy in Murfreesboro — the classic soda-fountain small-town-drugstore experience.
I like the shakes at Bobbie's a lot. Used to like the shakes at Rotier's and Elliston Place, but haven't been in a few years and don't know whether they have held up...
I've only been to Feast once, but I wasn't really impressed. I had the key lime salmon as well, and mine was really dry with very little flavor to the key lime butter. The mac and cheese was pretty bland too. Not worth the price, IMO. I don't plan a return visit.
We went there after Gordon came thru ... And it was terrible ...Didn't have the same atmosphere ...The beautiful stained glass was covered in barn would .....The waiters where in plaid shirts , church bench seats , fried green tomatoes where bare , mason jars with flowers , i think the table cloth was burlap =/ ...The whole table was upset , cause we had raved about how nice and awesome the food was , it was a shock really ..Went back when Chappy changed the menu back , awesome !!! Not everything was back to the way it was , perhaps in time it will be :)
I've liked all the food I've had at Feast, but it just seems to be having an identity crisis. Does it want to be a destination or a neighborhood favorite? That building is tough on restaurants, though despite the garage parking (which I love) and the great view across the river.
Haven't been to Aura yet, but it's on my to-do list.
Re: “The Fur Flies Tonight as Chappy Faces Off With Gordon Ramsay”
Actually, "Chappy's Po'Boys" might work if you made it a fast-casual place with NOLA sandwiches (and no gingham or barn wood). Start pumping out some decent shrimp, oyster, and roast beef w/debris on Leidenheimer bread and a good muffaleta? Works for me...
