Re: “Going Looney: The Takeaways

Maybe we should hire an overseas search firm to round out that diversity that is so
important, as well as a little International spin to use in our Music City being the "It"
city. Lots of time and money wasted in order for Mr. Looney to get more salary and benefits
versus a pay cut from the also bickering Williamson Board.

Re: “Opening Up My Notebook One Last Time on News and Food

I feel bad that I never got around to bringing you a Snicker's bar for old time's sake, Steve. You're as good as we'd all guessed you'd be, back in your Vision days, when we'd spar in the editorials. Followed your move from City to Scene, as did my writer hubs, & you will be missed by those who love the written word in Nashvega$. Much, much luck at the new gig, but don't ever forget---you can go home again.

Re: “Hey, Ladies, Here's the Growing List of Things to Avoid Should You Want to Stay Alive

Glad to know, Jimmy, that you believe that the health, safety, and well-being of about 51% of the entire population is just a distraction from the horrible crime being perpetrated on your wallet.

Also glad to see you concede that "A small fraction of the men in society do these horrendous things."

I'm thinking that that is pretty much EXACTLY what I am said above with, "Suppose we agreed that just 5-8% of all men were murderers/rapists. Most of them are just fine."

So thanks for the support.

Re: “Man, What a Great State for Rich People!

Seems like it'd be more cost-effective to pay the overtime for prison guards and eliminate unnecessary costs like the ineffective Teach For America instead OR god forbid- fix the ridiculous mass incarceration problem. Or both.

Re: “Going Looney: The Takeaways

"That being said I am NOT comfortable with the interim director."

That's good to know Jim since of course this whole decision revolves around you and your opinion as oppose to say, actual taxpayers. So rest assured you will be consulted every step of the way Jim. I'm assuming we can reach at home anytime, we don't seem to have a work number on you.

Re: “Going Looney: The Takeaways

Now you have tipped your hat - there are mayoral candidates that you don't think the board could work with. Let's hear it.

Must be. Want to read an amazing article?

94% of mass killers are men, BTW.

Why, yes, more cowbell. Usually it's just Betsy Phillips who posts on Troll Monday, but Megan Selig has joined her, apparently.

Re: “Going Looney: The Takeaways

Henry: This is now twice that I have broken my longstanding rule to stay out of the Pith comments section. Only you could persuade me to break the seal, so to speak. At this point, it would not be productive for me to cast aspersions on individual board colleagues. But what I will say is: We, as a group, delegated too much authority to the search firm. That needs to change, whenever the process re-starts. In 45 days, we will know who the next mayor is. If the polling I see is accurate, then I believe she or he will be a person the school board can work with to help take public education in Nashville to the next level. I think the board ought to be able to get around a table with the new mayor, in consultation with key Metro Council leaders, and design a process that the entire community owns - not just outsource the responsibility to a firm. The one positive thing this process revealed is that the board does have the ability to rally together for the benefit of the entire school system. During our marathon meetings and interviews with the job candidates, we had the most refreshing and insightful conversations as a group that we've had during my time on the board. I thanked my colleagues publicly - all of them - and I hope we will continue in the same collegial spirit when the search resumes.

Re: “Hey, Ladies, Here's the Growing List of Things to Avoid Should You Want to Stay Alive

But Donna... I've illustrated that many of these high profile cases are based on claims that turn out to be false. God bless you for your work with the crisis centers and certainly I don't condone the horrible experiences you may have endured; but this whole thing is an issue with an intent to divide. A small fraction of the men in society do these horrendous things and the vast majority of men are on the side of women condemning this behavior as abhorrent.

The writer started by painting men with a broad brush and I tied that to a political movement that was orchestrated to stimulate outrage in women against men. It's the same tactic that's been used over the past 6 years to divide this country, not just on sex, but on race, sexual preference, wealth, age, religion, education level... you name it. And while everyone sits around being outraged the political ruling class takes advantage of that distraction and parties hard on our credit card (to the tune of $8.5 Trillion more dollars just over the last 6 years).

We need to view these things soberly or else we're just become wind-up toy soldiers in their little armies.

I have enjoyed the discussion guys. I hope you all have a nice evening.

Re: “Hey, Ladies, Here's the Growing List of Things to Avoid Should You Want to Stay Alive

The "angst" is not "manufactured," Jimmy. What really goes on is far more prevalent than what you ever hear about. I answered a hotline for many years and listened to many accounts that were never reported to anyone but the rape crisis center. I had enough life experience to know that what I was hearing was no anomaly.

Re: “Going Looney: The Takeaways

I agree. Ms. Hunter's comments have consistently implied that having an African-American school director was her main, if not only, consideration.

Some idle speculation:

The search firm, working behind the scenes with Gentry and a very few others, never looked beyond Looney. The other three finalists were just place- holders. Because the board wanted diversity, the firm made sure that two of the four finalists were African-Americans who interviewed well, but no one bothered to check them out in any detail. It wasn't going to matter.

After spending weeks persuading Looney to apply and all but promising him the job, the search firm (and Gentry) panicked over Jay Steele's selection as interim director. Despite not being a finalist (a sure sign the fix was in) , Steele was still a potential rival to Looney. That's why Gentry was willing to make the whole board look bad in order to get rid of Steele and why she kept pushing for a final decision despite calls for a pause in the process. She wanted Looney before he changed his mind. Had Looney taken the job, all would have been forgiven and forgotten. Now it's a shipwreck. No wonder Gentry says the board will have to start over. There was never more than one name on the short list.

Will, come by the house for a beer some evening and tell me if I'm close.
