Re: “Midnight Munchies: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles This Weekend at The Belcourt

In a perfect world, the comic book (a parody of Frank Miller's ninja comics such as Ronin) would have remained an obscure cult item, instead of spawning a media empire.

Re: “Midnight Munchies: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles This Weekend at The Belcourt

Prominent? I mean...yeah, the Hammer song was there, but it was kinda drowned out by everything else going on in that scene. But really, if that and the admittedly ridiculous Splinter line are your only gripes, then I kinda feel like you're trying to diss on the flick to justify the new one. And it's like...if you gotta go to those lengths, then maybe it's just not worth it.

Re: “Belcourt Bets the Farm on Boyhood

"Along with this weekend's midnight shows of the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles — the fact I had to precede that with "the original" charts one more notch in the decline of cinema ..."

You mean you're not eager to see the dark, brooding, angst-ridden version of Turtles produced by Michael Bay (a man not known for intentional humor)? I am shocked. ;)

Re: “In Case You Missed It: Amanda Valentine Back on Project Runway!

Amber, she did show at NYFW. They show more than the top contenders so the finalists aren't revealed before the show airs.

Re: “Ralph Bakshi's X-Rated, Animated Head Trip Heavy Traffic Midnight at Belcourt

INSIDE DEEP THROAT was interesting, but I'm leery of its claim that DEEP THROAT earned $600 million. That would make it much, much more lucrative than other early '70s hits like THE GODFATHER, THE EXORCIST or THE TOWERING INFERNO. And I think those films were seen by more people. (I don't remember if the $600M claim was just the theatrical gross, or included VHS/DVD sales and rentals.)

Of course, we'll never know how much money THROAT made, because the Mafia pocketed the money, they do their business in cash, and they're not known for keeping the most accurate records ...

Re: “Ralph Bakshi's X-Rated, Animated Head Trip Heavy Traffic Midnight at Belcourt

I was mistaken: it's in the documentary INSIDE DEEP THROAT, which has an interview with the mob functionary nicknamed "The Candyman," whose work in Memphis — which included a detour to Nashville to bulk-buy Goo-Goos — inadvertently set off the obscenity charges.

Also, AIP boss Samuel Z. Arkoff was reportedly the one who threatened to pull out if HEAVY TRAFFIC was made without Bakshi.

Tracking down the Nashville reference ...

Re: “Ralph Bakshi's X-Rated, Animated Head Trip Heavy Traffic Midnight at Belcourt

Right. HEAVY TRAFFIC was released by the equally prestigious American International. (Actually, AIP was going upscale in the '70s, which led to the company's demise after it sank millions into turkeys like METEOR and SHOUT AT THE DEVIL).

There's a story about Tobe Hooper going to Bryanton's New York office to collect the money he was owed for CHAIN SAW, and retreating after guns were pulled on him. Or so the story goes.

I've read the Legs McNeil book, "The Other Hollywood." I don't remember a Nashville reference, but it does describe the DEEP THROAT trial in Memphis. Harry Reems was a defendant.

Such an embarrassment to the city. So unattractive and not stylish. Hope this doesn't draw more Portlandia hipsters to this town.

Re: “Meet the Artist: Sam's Myth

How are these news rack "art" projects not just graffiti? If newspaper racks located within the public way are really just litter, can't just I throw that litter away?
