Re: “Tennessee Isn't Getting Marriage Equality Anytime Soon

There is no such thing as "easily fixed with legislation."

A better, more elegant, non-discriminatory solution, would be to simply declare bans on same-sex marriage unconstitutional, that way the word "spouse" in current legislation would be gender neutral.

Re: “Tennessee Isn't Getting Marriage Equality Anytime Soon

Angl-

Only as currently written.

Marriage is a loaded term. A vestige of a former time when Church and State was much more blended. It could easily be fixed with legislation if there were enough political will.

Re: “The Southern Baptist Convention Walks a Fine Line

And yet, visit the website of the SBC and there is not one official listing in it's menus for any of the things I listed, nor anything else similar.
Go to the website for the Episcopal church, they have a whole section for things like poverty, global justice, eco-justice, prison visitation and more.

I know individual people do very good work but the denomination is too busy bashing God's children with their Queen James Bibles.

"Who are usually the first people on the scene of a natural disaster?"

First responders, like fire fighters and police officers.

You'd think the name "first responders" would give the answer away.

Re: “The Southern Baptist Convention Walks a Fine Line

"Maybe the Southern Bigot Convention should stop focusing on their despite for gay people and focus on what Jesus demanded: feed the hungry, clothe the naked, visit the prisoners, house the homeless, support the marginalized and oppressed(like gays) etc etc"

Who are usually the first people on the scene of a natural disaster? Why, it's the Baptists, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, housing the homeless, etc, etc.

Keep your ignorance to yourself.

Re: “The Southern Baptist Convention Walks a Fine Line

AnglRdr,

"Now you see the fine line the SBC is trying to walk here. They're conveniently organized enough that they think the Boy Scouts should do what the SBC wants because of the number of Southern Baptists in the country who will otherwise stop being Boy Scouts. But they're not so organized that they can keep track of child-molesting ministers. Organized enough to continue to oppress gay people and their supporters, but not so organized that they can protect children from sexual abuse."

That is the crux of Betsy's argument as I see it.

I don't share all Betsy's positions in her piece but I think she is clear that the nexus here is the SBC's position on homosexuality and how it results in two contradictory decisions, both of which she sees as flawed. Think of it as her saying that homophobia is the 'Original Sin' for the SBC here.

Re: “The Southern Baptist Convention Walks a Fine Line

She's irresponsibly indicating there is some relationship between the two when she points out the two new policies, and states "Now you see the fine line the SBC is trying to walk here." She goes further with the "homophobia protects child molestors" talk.

Homophobes often accuse LGBTQ people of being pedophiles, and uses such libels as yet another reason to discriminate against LGBTQ people.

Re: “The Southern Baptist Convention Walks a Fine Line

AnglRdr,

Betsy is not conflating homosexuality with child molestation. She is holding the SBC to be consistent on the issue of organizational responsibility.

The SBC's position on the two issues is close to requiring a belief in 'A' on the former and 'Anti-A' on the latter.

No reasonable person could think Betsy was suggesting a link between homosexuality and child molestation.

Re: “Nashville Symphony Orchestra May Go Into Bankruptcy

Beautiful building, talented award-winning orchestra, yet "Music City" can't its residents off their asses to fill seats. They could rally the city around saving a god damned talentless hockey team....and Nashville isn't "Hockey City, USA"...it's not even in a region where anyone plays or even cares about hockey. I'm starting to truly believe that the monicker of "Music City" is a great advertising scheme with very little basis in actual facts, other than people in the South enjoy listening to bad music with mindless lyrics, and they have to record it somewhere.

Re: “The Southern Baptist Convention Walks a Fine Line

Since I've been targeted for homosexual conversion on multiple occasions, including while speeding down the interstate, I know what I'm talking about! The Gays have secret documents that they have on file at their headquarters that explicitly state that their number one goal is to convert everyone to their lifestyle! The Boy Scounts is their next full frontal assault (no pun intended) on well-established societal norms! So if you plan on putting your children in the scouts, be advised and warned that they will be targeted for conversion!!!!!

Re: “The Southern Baptist Convention Walks a Fine Line

Often when children discover they are something other than a societal norm, they are confused.

But for xray and his fellow homophobes, they get stuck on the buttsex aspect of it and simply are not evolved enough to get beyond that.

OhtheIroney, civil unions do not convey the same rights as marriage, so yours is an unacceptable compromise.

Re: “The Southern Baptist Convention Walks a Fine Line

Jim Collins: "The expressed purpose of the SBC as I read it is to diminish the Boy Scouts to a point of relative insignificance as an example to others that oppose it's will and positions. The damage this may and probably will do to those of confused sexual identity is enormous ...."
Now you're accusing young gays of being "confused." They grow out of that, right? (Everybody knows gays are never confused and perfectly normal. Ask them.) And if wasn't for the SBC there wouldn't be any doubt about where their peckers go and everything would be okay? (bwaa-ha-ha.....)

Sorry, you'll have to seek your perverted indulgences elsewhere, AnglRdr.

And I won't try to explain myself to a dimwit. It's a fool's errand.

How is the "gay lobby" "forcing" its "agenda" on "society," Zoombah.

I don't think you can define any of the words I've put in quotation marks anyway, but I'm bored, so please, entertain me.

xray: The laugh was in response to the abject stupidity coupled with your arrogant belief that you can pass that off in a serious discussion. While My memory is sometimes questionable (according to my wife and family), I did remember what I wrote! As far as overreacting, I just enjoy pissing you off, Gomer!
