Bell and I talked about Miller a bit; Bell called him "one of the greats," and said he had a good time on Miller's radio show.
As for Miller-now vs. Miller-then, Bell said: "I prefer his earlier material."

but I'm guessing he has to keep laughing so he doesn't cry about supporting more drone attacks killing kids, wars, debt, and destruction of our civil liberties.

Also true. Zanies in Nashville is certainly one of the good ones. I've been to many great shows there -- most recently Hannibal Buress a month or so ago. But, there's definitely a weird shift in perception between people who go to see a comedy show at a rock club and people who go to see a comedy show at a comedy club.
Most of the shows I've seen at Zanies (the aforementioned Patton show, Christopher Titus, Doug Benson) have gone off with out a hitch. But, every once in a while, you wind up seeing a show there where some people in the audience had no idea what they were getting themselves into and reacted in a hostile way. That Hannibal show is a good example, where one audience member got completely belligerent at the end of the set.
In any case, it's just a different spirit between High Watt and Zanies. One isn't better than the other, but it's definitely different. Although, I think we'd all be thrilled if the weird Ziggy car crash art went away.

That was an amazing show, and Kinane held his own as opener. And while I'm glad to see some of the edgier talents turning up in Nashville rock clubs — Todd Barry, Neil Hamburger, Neal Brennan, etc. — I'm impressed by the name acts Zanies is able to bring in week after week, even if I probably won't get to see them. Comedy competitions in any format are all kinda bullshit just due to the subjective nature of humor and art in general but I agree that any time a comic can do straight stand-up on primetime network tv, that's a good thing. America's Got Talent has had a few comics in the mix more recently, too.
Don't be so quick to write off traditional comedy clubs. We've got a great one here in Nashville. The first time Kyle came to town was when he featured for Patton Oswalt at Zanies on August 8, 2010.

True. But can you come up with another stand-up focused series that aired on primetime network television that wasn't a sitcom? I'd argue that Last Comic Standing did a lot of heavy lifting in reintroducing stand-up to the general public. Even though it was, as I mentioned, deeply flawed.
Also, it was still running when the podcast boom, if you can call it that, was starting to ramp up significantly. Maron started in 2009, Nerdist in early 2010, Comedy Death Ray in 2009. It wasn't a great show, but I think it has at least some significance to where comedy's at now, as far as the general public sees it.

I remember several "Carson/Tonight Shows." Great TV-Wonderful
use of the Medium. Very different from the way Oprah uses it.
Did you happen to see any of the Sarah Vaughan/Waymon Reed
appearances. If you are one of the above named Lawyer/Citizens
you would remember those performances. You might have known
Mr.Reed, the Trumpet player. He is/was a famous musician/PHS
graduate, often ignored by local historians. In the opinion(s)
of many, he was probably a better Trumpet-player than Quincy,
but "long-live" Quincy's music. One of, if not the best Composer/
Producer/Arranger of American Popular Music of the 20th Century.
