Re: “As Nashville's immigrant population grows, Metro public schools are straining at the seams

It's true, having friends that speak your native language makes it very difficult to learn English but enduring constant remarks and "jokes" about the way you speak English is something you never forget. The confidence it takes to speak a new language is remarkable. These kids learning English despite the odds shows more courage than most adults I know have.

Re: “As Nashville's immigrant population grows, Metro public schools are straining at the seams

Anon had it right at 2:47 - that projected growth is a million in the Middle Tennessee region, not just Nashville. Projected growth in Davidson County by 2040 will be around 200,000, with no single ethnic group in the majority countywide. I'm with the Metro Planning Dept., a closer look at NashvilleNext is available at nashvillenext. net.

Remember when yoyo would publish all his racist screeds under the name yoyo moi? What happened to that? Did he tire of the infamy? He used to revel and preen in being a pariah. I guess he must have gotten his feelings hurt. (Who would be so cruel?) It would suck to always be the geek in the crowd. Should you expect anything different though when you devote your life to being a troll?

Re: “As Nashville's immigrant population grows, Metro public schools are straining at the seams

"But learning English is hard work" - probably the best line of the article.

Not everyone is cut out to be proficient in two languages. This is especially true after you've hit middle school.

More power to these people who are looking to make better lives for themselves and who put in the time and effort to assimilate and learn the language.

It saddens me that Xeyli has a couple sentences in the article, and one is a backward swipe at a airline worker's possible racism. Sad that Xeyli has yet to fully comprehend that it's not racism just because you don't get special treatment. Shit, it was an airline FFS. Everyone gets treated poorly. Learn that lesson, and you well on the road to becoming a Real American (like Jack Swagger).

Re: “As Nashville's immigrant population grows, Metro public schools are straining at the seams

Here ya go,,,,,,,,another attack on those bad ole white Americans.
Why don't you quit being so,,,so,,,white. Why don't you quit being so American and conducting your daily conversations in English. Can't you see that we are here now and you need to change and accommodate us. We've already taken your jobs so ya might as well move over and let us have your schools as well. And while you're at it could ya get rid of all those teachers who don't look like us so our kids will feel more comfortable here. You might want to rethink this language thing to.By 2026 our population will have grown to the point that we will be totally in charge of all government offices then we will pass laws making it illegal to speak English in Tennessee. Better get those spainish books out and get cracking. It'll come in handy to. When our little bastards breeze through your school system without an education and can't get work, you'll need to understand when they knock on your door with a gun in their hand and tell you to get on the floor or get you ass shot.
My God, when I think of the blood that was shed for our nations freedom and then we have Libtards like you writing trash like this and elected officials with the morality and mind set of a street walking 2dollar whore it makes me glad that our forefathers aren't here to see this.

Re: “As Nashville's immigrant population grows, Metro public schools are straining at the seams

Arabs are Caucasians since they have the same origins as Europeans. It's also important to note that Caucasians evolved in the Middle East (near the Caucasus, north of Iran).

The ''Caucasians'' include: Arabs, North African (Berbers), Iranians, Indian Subcontinental people, Europeans etc. The predominant racial type in all those areas is Caucasian. Even though all these Caucasian groups have some non-Caucasian admixture to some degree (including Europeans) they are still more genetically closer to each other than to non-Caucasians.

Re: “As Nashville's immigrant population grows, Metro public schools are straining at the seams

"By 2040, the plan expects Nashville's population to grow by roughly a million people."

It's the Nashville region, not just Nashville/Davidson County, which will grow by a million persons by 2040.

"although many Middle Eastern families mark their children as white, for lack of a more specific category."

The Middle East is part of Asia and Middle Eastern families should mark themselves and their children as Asian.

You know who provides aid and support to the illegals? Your gardener. Almost every restaurant in this town. The home builders. The grocery store produce department. We are the enemy because we don't want to pay a fair wage for services. If we didn't hire them, they wouldn't be here. The enemy is us. And as long as we continue to exploit their cheap labor and they're living here paying taxes, then they deserve all the services.

Go ahead, try to persuade yoyo moi/jim jackpot to give up his prejudices and assumptions. You could also try to teach your dog not to lick his balls. Similar exercises. Similar results.

Re: “As Nashville's immigrant population grows, Metro public schools are straining at the seams

I work at Overton and the vast majority of these students are permanent residents- I've seen their green cards/social security numbers. Many of them have been brought over recently to join their parents, who may have been here for a longer period of time, and/or are refugees. I have students who have fled from the persecution of the Baha'i in Iraq, the genocide of the Kurds in Iran, the Kuki-Zomi war, and the persistent violation of human rights in Myanmar/Burma. Do I have students that are undocumented? Absolutely. Are they the norm? Absolutely not (and those who are are MINORS who can't go back to their so-called "home countries" on their own). Don't make stupid assumptions about students you know nothing about.

They pay no taxes? Really? Do they not pay sales tax when they purchase food or clothing? Does the mother not pay payroll taxes through her job? Does their landlord not pay property taxes out of the rent payment? Does the mother not pay gasoline tax when she fuels her car? Exactly what taxes do these people not pay that you do?

Re: “Behind the Amendment 1 vote on abortion rights lies a tangle of case law, confusion and conflict

@brothermartin It's up to each individual reader — and voter — to decide what is "nasty" or "deceitful." As one of the authors of this story, my intent was to present the facts: the political/legal history of Amendment 1 and what each side of the campaign is saying about it. I certainly don't hide my stance on Amendment 1, but I would never allow that to pollute the way in which I reported on this issue.

Re: “Behind the Amendment 1 vote on abortion rights lies a tangle of case law, confusion and conflict

The interesting thing is the fight is as much about semantics and define (or re-define) the state constitution, and in so doing, define reality for the millions who live in Tennessee. Drive around the area and get a look at the homes with big 'Yes on 1' signs and it becomes clear the fight is less about a medical procedure and more about who's boss.

Don't you know the Scene EXISTS to glorify Millennial hipsters?

Paulie, I can bellyache all I want. I bought in Sylvan Park when most hipsters were still wearing diapers.

They're tearing down all of the affordable (a relative term, I know) homes here and building crappy, ugly houses that dwarf their neighbors and don't fit in at all. But I guess that last point will be moot in 20 years, when all of the houses are crappy, ugly and huge. What a waste.
