Re: “First Bite: Husk Nashville

My two cents:

Not a fan of the decor at all. I ate in the purple dining room on the street level, and wasn't particularly taken with the art or purple walls. I do love the exterior of the building, and the downstairs dining room looked nice.

Went for lunch last week. My grouper was overcooked. The accouterments with it were good. The fried green tomatoes were unremarkable. Lockeland Table's version is considerably better. I tried someone else's catfish BLT, not impressed. I did enjoy the Benton's ham plate, and i had a bite of a pretty tasty burger. I'll definitely give it another chance at dinner in the near future.

At this point, it may be a victim of its own hype. I must admit, my expectations were pretty high.

xray: Poverty rates are significantly higher in rural areas. There are more poor people in cities because a greater number of all people in the US live in cities.

http://www.ers.usda.gov/topics/rural-econo…

And the article is about "Federal Aid as a Percentage of State General Revenue," not "federal taxes in and out." You, however, claimed that a significant number of people don't pay taxes, a claim that is demonstrably false.

Re: “Tennessee's Stiff-Arm Is an Outstretched Hand

@wvfii: The next time you choose to comment wait until you're sober. Harry Reid said Romney paid no taxes. It was erroneous information but he must have trusted the source of that information and the place the source (who screwed up) would have to be is the IRS. About Obamaphones: It was on the news last night that the cost had reached $2 billion.

@madison: The article was about federal taxes out and in, not all the local stuff. The thing is, there are too many varying factors for the charts to mean much but it cannot be denied that a large percentage of our population are big city dwellers who are always on and will always be on the dole. If it displeases you that I noticed that, well.....(Psst, nationwide we have ten percent of Mexico up here cashing in.)

Re: “In the Case of Pilot Flying J: Keep Your Eye on John Freeman

I wonder if the News-Sentinel will dare have a photo of Jimmy Haslam in cuffs doing the perp walk after that indictment is handed down. I just can't wait, what with the giddy anticipation of that happy scene.

Why, this crooked scam seems almost as bad as Pilot gouging us during and after that hurricane.

Re: “Tennessee's Stiff-Arm Is an Outstretched Hand

EBT cards are designed to buy only foodstuffs, Adam. It is illegal to purchase " lottery tickets and cigarettes". When that is occurring and the authorities are aware, arrests and prosecutions soon follow. WTF else can be done, starve the poor?
Coast Guard serves on inland waterways by law also, and as far as I can determine, there is NO submarine base in Oklahoma, and the WW II navy base there was a Naval Air Base. The Nuclear Training facility in Idaho trains necessary naval personnel on servicing and managing nuclear operations both on board naval shipping, but on mainland facilities also if needed!

Re: “Tennessee's Stiff-Arm Is an Outstretched Hand

xray: "You're failing to consider that Tennessee has two large cities that comprise one third of the state's population with half those people not paying taxes but receiving benefits, thus skewing the percentages."

Please let me know how it's possible to live in Tennessee and not pay taxes. We don't have an income tax, but we have taxes on sales, property (renters pay this indirectly), car tags, gas, services, liquor, cigarettes, food -- almost every time money legally changes hands.

At the federal level, there are also taxes beyond the income tax, such as FICA and gas taxes.

Re: “Tennessee's Stiff-Arm Is an Outstretched Hand

Williamson County only takes in so much because half the state shops at Cool Springs Mall. Don't get on a high horse. They just got there first.

It's interesting how many people ignore the details of the map and try to deduct things that were already deducted, in order to say, hey, we aren't really moochers! But we are. The numbers don't lie. We pay less federal taxes and soak up more federal expenditures than other states, per capita. You blame the big scary liberal cities, but which US Representative collected millions in farm subsidies?

People are seeing through all these republican lies about budgets. It's pretty easy, if you just read once in a while. Republicans spent MANY billions on infrastructure in Iraq, but it would be wrong to do that in the United States, for some reason. Republicans gave away billions to drug companies in Medicare Part D, but they don't want the individual responsibility of required medical plans for everyone, which would save money paid by the government.

Even here in Tennessee, Governor Haslam's administration is trying to tear down historic buildings because they have a leak sometimes, sell the land to a developer, let them build office space, and then lease that space back to the state. The state is also breaking legal contracts with the L&C Tower, which will end up costing millions in legal fees and hurt our states business image. All of this is poor stewardship of tax money.

For years, scientists have tried to generate the hybrid "man-crab" in laboratories. After several unsuccessful attempts, scientists decide to try it "the old fashioned way."

just maybe try getting your news from somewhere other than FOX or talk radio, just once. you're welcome to factcheck the things you hear that might make you uncomfortable.

ok xray, make up your mind. either Romney paid all of his taxes, or Reid had his 'zomg IRS spies' determine that he, in fact, did not. you dont get to have it both ways.

Re: “Tennessee's Stiff-Arm Is an Outstretched Hand

"And what did your lord and savior do about that?"

As far as I know, Jesus Christ has not done anything about it. He's more concerned with feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, freeing the prisoners, tending the sick and otherwise doing those needful things that conservatives reject when it costs an extra penny.

Cleveland Plain Dealer is also covering it because Cleveland suburb Westlake is home to arch rival TravelCenters of America.

Re: “Tennessee's Stiff-Arm Is an Outstretched Hand

Adam, the map is about *federal aid,* which doesn't include all federal spending. Defense and Social Security aren't considered federal aid. For example, in 2010 the federal government spent about $650 billion in federal aid -- things like farm subsidies, transportation projects, environmental programs -- while state budgets totaled about $1.5 trillion.

And all those suburbanites benefit heavily from an interstate system that provides them access to their jobs in Davidson County, and from Davidson County infrastructure. Take a look at the roads on any weekday morning to look at commuting patterns.
