Re: “The Breeders w/Deerhunter at Cannery Ballroom, 5/14/13

I heard it sounded like shit (not the band, the PA). That's a bummer!

Re: “The Breeders w/Deerhunter at Cannery Ballroom, 5/14/13

That was the worst sounding show I've ever been to. So bummed they moved it to the Cannery. Seriously, if you're not in front of the stage, how can you even understand what's going on in that room?

A perfect example of how a big budget doesn't mean much.

Christ, folks. That's a pretty solid case of constructive criticism. He/she points out most of the same shortcomings The Spin does, just in a far less forgiving way – I assume because they're not so enamored by the story, they came to see a performance and not "worship" the man in the flesh.

Re: “Pere Ubu to Play Mercy Lounge Sept. 8

the early Ubu of "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" and "Modern Dance" is among my favorite music ever, but I like most of what they've done over the years. Goose, I will say that I at least regard "Modern Dance" as just plain punk, it was too early for "post-punk" in 1978, maybe...? I got the chance to interview David Thomas in 2006, when Rocket from the Tombs played here. I found him a guy you could really engage.

Re: “Rodriguez w/Jenny O. at the Ryman, 5/13/13

"Anonymous" you say you were fortunate to have gone as a guest. I would not disagree with that. I would with everything else you say. You witnessed an artist that is a true gem that until recently was lost in the gravel and dirt of inner city Detroit. A city that is an American tragedy.
I thought his band was fine and I was not expecting Herbie Hancock style precision. Gosh, this is folk music here and he is 70 years old.
Concentrate on the message and vibe and enjoy the legend. I bet you won't find Dylan enjoyable this summer if you are looking for perfection.

Re: “Third Man Records to Release Sun Records Reissue Series, Beginning With Rufus Thomas, The Prisonaires and Johnny Cash

And even more on the Prisonaires if I may engage in a little self-promotion:

http://nashvillepublicradio.org/blog/2013/…

All of Carl Perkins including his first record on the short-lived Sun subsidiary "Flip Records," Harmonica Frank Floyd, Warren Smith -Miss Froggie, Billy Riley - Flying Saucer Rock'n'Roll, Miller Sisters - "Ten Cats Down," and even though its from the Shelby Singleton Sun era as opposed to the Sam Phillips era, the complete Orion on 45, baby!

Re: “Third Man Records to Release Sun Records Reissue Series, Beginning With Rufus Thomas, The Prisonaires and Johnny Cash

"Just Walkin' in the Rain" — must have. A record of unearthly beauty.

Speaking of which, as far as future releases go, I vote for Howard Seratt's "Troublesome Waters." A record that stops time dead in its tracks. And c'mon, you gotta have The Killer.

Re: “Bad Cop's 'Light On' [Fresh Vid]

Badcop sounds absolutely nothing like Turbo Fruits. The guitar riff in this song > butter. the whole record.

Dear bad cop, I fucking hate your first album- but I love you for this. So good. Summer anthem.

Re: “Rodriguez w/Jenny O. at the Ryman, 5/13/13

I don't know, man. I had a completely different takeaway on this show.

I'm posting this anonymously because I was graciously comped a ticket and don't want to come off to my provider as non-appreciative, but damn I thought this show sucked. Loved the film, loved the music in the film, but damn. Dude has some charisma but that backing band did absolutely nothing for me at all. The bass player did well enough try to reign in the other guys, but the drummer seemed like he was aimlessly switching grooves at all the wrong spots. Unfocused on the whole. Just insipid uninspired stuff. Rodriguez himself seemed most limber and "into it" on his clearly on-the-fly solo numbers. With the band, he seemed to play too much, but I guess it's hard to fall into a solid groove, tempo, what-have-you when there's not much back there to fall into. Again, I'm fortunate to have gone as a guest, but perhaps even more fortunate not to have paid $35.

"Bad Cop" was a lot better when it was called "turbo fruits".

Although I don't listen to old-timey music, this is very cool

Jack copied their colors, might as well copy their music.

Rufus!

Can't believe I sold my Pere Ubu box set of vinyl 7"s when I was hard-up for money. Dang!
