Re: “The Black Belles' Olivia Jean to Release Jack White-Produced Debut Solo LP Oct. 14

Just read on another thread that this record deal and heavy promotion was given to Olivia Jean to keep her quiet about Jack's divorce and the cheating scandal. It is very disheartening to learn that she manipulated her situation with Jack to get herself a recording contract. That does not say a lot for a woman who is already viewed as most as untalented. I have to admit I was surprised when Third Man made the announcement that Jack produced an album for her. All or nearly all of the guys in the Buzzards have solo projects or play in other groups and the same with the girls in the Peacocks. All of these guys and girls are all far more talented than Olivia Jean. Even the two guys who help Jack run Third Man records are part of groups whose music is far better than Olivia Jean. Seems very unfair these really talented musicians were over looked and Olivia Jean got a record deal and such heavy promotion in order to keep her quiet. Manipulative people like her should not be rewarded.

The Sterling Sisters would be a great choice to open for Jack. So would Pujol or Jeff The Brotherhood. It is very disheartening to learn that an album was produced and the heavy promotion for Olivia Jean was to keep her quiet about Jack's divorce and the cheating scandal. That does not say a lot for a woman who is already viewed as most as untalented. I have to admit I was surprised when Third Man made the announcement that Jack produced an album for her. All or nearly all of the guys in the Buzzards have solo projects or play in other groups and the same with the girls in the Peacocks. All or nearly all of those girls have solo careers or are part of groups and they are all far more talented than Olivia Jean. But Dennis is right fans see through all of this. She may have Jack by the balls but she certainly does not have the fans. Fans should just boo this her right off the stage.

Re: “Dylan, Cash and the Nashville Cats: A New Music City to Open Next Year at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum

David Cobb (look him up) is rolling in his grave.

And, while Owen Bradley and Chet Atkins can't tell us, my guess is they are probably not too happy either...

You're absolutely right; we flip-flopped the album titles. Thanks for the note. We've corrected the post.

Re: “Yautja's Van Robbed in St. Louis

Hey there!
"The Process of Self Immolation" is the record by Alraune, which won the poll. Yautja's record is "Songs of Descent".

Also everyone donate and help these guys out

Re: “Jack White to Play Bridgestone Arena Jan. 28

I would love to see The Sterling Sisters open for jack. Or any legit Nashville bands. The fans are not stupid, the constant over promotion of OJ is probably to keep her quiet about his divorce and cheating affair scandal.

Re: “Jack White to Play Bridgestone Arena Jan. 28

Daru Jones is a good drummer but I thought Carla Azur the drummer Jack used in his all female band The Peacocks is just as good and if not better. I was quite surprised that Jack used any of the musicians from the Buzzards or the Peacocks on the Lazaretto tour as Jack seems like he does not repeat himself in the music he put out. They are all fine musicians playing with Jack and in their own right but I hope for Jack's next solo project he goes in a whole different direction. Jack probably the most creative and innovative musicians in the world. I hope for his next solo record he puts out something new and completely different than what he did with the Buzzards and the Peacocks. I'm sure what ever he does it will be great. Jack never disappoints.

Re: “Dinosaur Rock Round-Up: The Who and Fleetwood Mac Announce Bridgestone Arena Shows; Green Day, Nine Inch Nails, The Smiths and Others Nominated for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

I would first like to say that Adam Gold has greatly impressed me with his cutting edge writing. Two uses of "fucking" in the same brief article? Bravo, tough guy.

In the spirit of this insightful piece, I think the Scene needs to go back into the archives and change the headline on a recent cover to read "Loretta Lynn: Fucking Old". And the next time a beloved hipster icon like Neil Young or Tom Waits comes to town, be sure to call them dinosaurs. Hell, why wait - next week in the inevitable (and deserved) Critics Pick for Paul McCartney, call him a "fucking dinosaur" and get a two-for-one.

I realize that Fleetwood Mac and The Who are easy targets, but if you are not thrilled they are coming to town, just report the news and keep your snark to yourself. On the nights of the shows, put on your trucker cap, crack open a PBR, listen to Diarrhea Planet, and stay home. Those of us who love the bands will go to the concerts and hear songs that have been the soundtrack to our lives.

As a benevolent dictator once perfectly said, "Typewriter bangers on, they're all just hangers on".

"Dominic Davis and Fats Kapalan were out there watching her whole set in Cleveland as well and they are very talented in their own rite!"

What you didn't see were the electric shock collars they had on which Jack can trigger via remote control. Just rewatch the vid and tell me how natural these guys sound heaping praise on Olivia. Allegedly, you can see the barrel of a shotgun enter the frame for a split second during the Fats Kaplin part.

Re: “Olivia Jean's 'Reminisce' [Fresh Vid]

Are Jack and Thirdman actually saying this is good music? Where did she dig up that wig from? Amy Winehouse's grave?

Re: “Jack White to Play Bridgestone Arena Jan. 28

Stephanie - I am with Dylan on this. When you put out on album and you are on tour with an major respected artist that is not the time you should be learning your craft or loosening up. I think this is exactly why people are so suspect of the reasons Olivia Jean got a record deal with Third Man and why so many people are making fun of her. Jack's people actually come out and tell people they are not at a poetry reading and that they expect people to stand and participate at his shows. I really don't think he has the right to demand that when he puts on crappy opening acts like Olivia Jean. Did he ever think the reason why people were sitting and not participating is because they where unhappy with having to sit through Olivia Jean? Jack can produce anyone he wants and he can have anyone he likes open for him but that does not mean the fans have to like them. It's great that Olivia has so many friends at Third Man Records who support her. But at her talent level they should support her by going to see her play in her garage and not subjecting her to the fans. Jack is not doing Olivia any favors by putting her out there or pushing her onto the fans when she clearly is not ready for it. Dylan is correct. If this was any other artist there would be no excuses.

Re: “Spurgeon’s General Warning: I Like Coldplay

Aaron, all the comparisons you draw between The Cure and Counting Crows are superficial — if you look at things like critical reception, commercial performance and influence, the comparison falls apart.

Also, if Travis sounds British, then that can't make them Coldplay's American counterpart. If the whole thing about Coldplay is that they SOUND British, then the whole thing about their American counterpart should be that they SOUND American. In which case, maybe Kings of Leon? Easy to digest, kind of boring, kind of inoffensive, but totally American-sounding and -acting with occasionally catchy songs.

Re: “Spurgeon’s General Warning: I Like Coldplay

They aren't the Counting Crows of brit rock. They are the Travis of Brit Rock. Because Travis aren't British, but might as well be. They are also the watered-down Bends-era Radiohead of the 2000's. And yes, all of those things are better than pretty much all the other modern rock bands except maybe The Killers. Side note: Counting Crows are the Americana version of The Cure. Melancholic, introspective, insecure singer with weird/big hair, a warbly tenor, and a weight problem. One of the easiest comparisons that no one every makes.

Re: “Jack White to Play Bridgestone Arena Jan. 28

I don't totally agree with @Stephanie Townsend. Audiences should not have to pay money to give an artist a chance to come into their own or to loosen up or to learn their craft on stage. Not while they are paying good money for tickets. An artist should have come into their own and be ready to perform at their best when they take to a professional stage or they are an opening act for a Grammy Award winning musician. It's nice that the TMR family supports her because obviously she is friends with all of them. But just because someone is friends with Jack or anyone at TMR does not mean they are ready to open for him or have an album produced by him. I'm tired of people making excuses for this girl's lack of talent. When audiences are paying money to see an artist play then they need to deliver and she did not. I also think part of the reason she is being ridiculed so much is because of the ridiculous video they put out on her making her out to be the greatest thing since the Beatles or that she is some prodigy when it comes to playing all the instruments they claim she plays. Yes, she does play all those instruments but she really does not play any of them well? She plays them at a beginner novice level. Would any other opening act for Jack be allowed to loosen up or come into their own while they take the stage in front of a crowd at a concert? Any other act that performed as badly as she did when she opened for Jack would have been torn apart. Why should she be any different? Olivia Jean needs to get her act together, stop making excuses for her poor performances and start delivering. Otherwise she should get off the stage.
