Re: “Weekly Open Thread: Do You Shop Organic?

Try organic broccoli next to non- organic broccoli. Younger people have for the most part grown up eating non-organic. I am almost 60 years old. Organic broccoli tastes like it did when I was growing up. Also, burgers made with grass fed, no hormone beef tastes like burgers did when I was a kid.

Re: “Edley's Bar-B-Que Adding New Location in Sylvan Park

YASNI you think Edley's, Hattie B's and Burger Up are authentic Nashville treasures. Sorry hipsters, newbies and tourist, but you can do so much better in Music City.

Re: “Edley's Bar-B-Que Adding New Location in Sylvan Park

Neighbors? Seriously? Edley's will print money in Sylvan Park. Neighbors is a joke, especially in regards to beer selection and service. You've been drinking too many Bushwackers, my friend.

Re: “Jeni's Delays Hillsboro Village Scoop Shop as More Listeria Found in Production Kitchen

At least they're entirely local. Ask the Farmer's Market.

Testing is nice, but elimination would be better. Is it possible to be Industrial Terrorism or is this really just two occurrences of the same unlikely event happening in less than 3 months?

Re: “Weekly Open Thread: Do You Shop Organic?

We definitely shop organic, which is the reason I avoid stores like Publix, who do not consistently stock fresh organic produce. Whole Foods and Trader Joe's get the majority of my money, since at the rate we eat bulk purchases at Costco would go to waste.

Re: “Edley's Bar-B-Que Adding New Location in Sylvan Park

I'm sure they'll do well, but there is much, much better BBQ right across the street at Neighbor's, who, incidentally, also serves real Bushwackers. Edley's better realize their fake ice cream drink crap won't fly here.

Re: “Weekly Open Thread: Do You Shop Organic?

Nope. Organic is all hype, no substance. There is no consistent advantage to buying organic food. It's all profit motive, and that's borne out in the industry figures. Whole Foods has a consistent gross profit margin of 36%, whereas Kroger's is only 21%. Put succinctly, they're overcharging for substantially the same product.

They keep hyping "no pesticides" when in fact, the truth is no synthetic pesticides. Organic is permitted to use "natural" pesticides, which, in some cases, are far more toxic and dangerous to human health than synthetic pesticides.

Re: “Weekly Open Thread: Do You Shop Organic?

I think that this news is interesting in the context of the controversy around whole food's new labeling system - where, in essence, whole foods is attempting to give more information about how it's products are grown that is not currently encapsulated by the term "organic".

NPR's story on it today is well worth a listen: http://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2015/0…

Re: “Moldovan Government Introduces 'Wine of Moldova' Program to Promote the Country's Best Wines

For my wine column in Florida Weekly, I received several samples of Moldovan wine. I've not tried them yet, but will in the next few weeks. They're making a real effort to get into the market.

Re: “I scream, you scream, we all scream, because ice cream is trying to kill us ... but summer isn't ruined

I recently tried Comfy Cow ice cream which has recently opened up in that new Brentwood shopping/dining stripmall situation where Blaze Pizza has opened. I think they have a few locations in KY and Indiana. It's super cute inside with icecream pie options, make your own ice cream sandwich options and a bevy of flavors and toppings. You can also get a flight of icecream... three flavors in smaller scoops- great for sharing or if you just can't make up your mind. It's no Jenni's but there also isn't a line 20ppl deep trying to get in. I'll be back for sure!

This is the sixth time since February that "food journalist" (aka Porter Road Butcher publicist Chris Chamberlain has shamelessly promoted this butcher shop. THE SIXTH TIME! Is there no limit to the PR flackery that masquerades as journalism at the Scene?

Re: “Free Scoops Friday as Jeni's Ice Cream Opens in Hillsboro Village — CANCELED

Why does The Nashville Scene keep writing about Jeni's without pointing out that they are an Ohio-based company that was allowed to move into the Nashville Farmer's Market at the exact time the Market was booting out people for selling non-local produce?

I know, I know. There are different rules for the Food Court and for the Vegetable shed. But there are plenty of contradictions there too. Last weekend, the so-called "local farmers" were selling all kinds of produce from Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina. Including the Georgia Peach Truck. Uh, how local is Georgia?

Too bad the city's so-called "alternative" can't do more than rewrite press releases.
