So glad to welcome them to the 'hood. Missed their other place.
For NOLA eats try Luke (fantastic brasserie by John Besh), Cochon (duh), Babylon Cafe (great brunch), Felix's Oyster Bar (a staple), Pepperoni Cafe (a charming dive), and Freret St. Po'boys and Donuts (best po'boy I had).
I work around the corner and was lukewarm about this place but I have to give them props, the food is awesome!
@Ryan - The prix fixe lunch at Restaurant August is not to be missed. A serious bargain ($20.01 for 3 courses) and truly exceptional food. We used the prix fixe as a starting point and then added on another course or two, but it is by no means necessary. The space, vibe, service and food were all just lovely!
@Ryan, I'm sure you'll get no shortage of recs from this board regarding NOLA eats, so I'll get in early: K-Paul was one of the best dining experiences of my life. The only thing that was ordinary was the dining room itself. The food was great - everything we tried was fantastic. Great service. And I thought the value was incredible - pretty reasonably priced place. I spent far more at other places (like Le Foret) and wasn't nearly as satisfied. And Royal House is a great place for lunch - I rec a bloody mary and oysters. And get a sazerac at the Sazerac Bar inside the Roosevelt Hotel.
As a side note, I found service in nola to be very hit or miss - some places like K Paul knocked it out the park and others were downright horrible.
To not totally hijack this thread, I'll say that Chappy's is underwhelming. I've eaten there 3-4 times and never been blown away. Enough with the butter already.
I ate at Chappy's once years ago. I thought it was completely unremarkable. I'm going to NOLA for the first time in a couple of weeks, other than Mother's, any recommendations for restaurants?
You know who makes a great, simple, hand-sized cheeseburger? SYLVAN PARK in GREEN HILLS. Hot, crispy fries, too. Believe it. As fresh as can be.
Congratulations to comment #5, the winner!
I have never eaten at Chappy's, but have had their food at events like Generous Helpings and the Sunset Safari. I was never impressed. I will say after seeing that walk-in on the show, I will NEVER eat there. Disgusting! I don't care if they cleaned it that night. He was so against change the entire episode, I wouldn't be surprised if it looked like it did on the show again. Gross.
Absolutely amazing! I wonder if any other state besides NY or Calif had as many winners. Bet we won more per capita...
eastender,,,,sadly i concur with the review,,, tried twice with dismal results both times.
And of course, as we already reported, Nashville's own Prince's Hot Chicken won a James Beard Foundation America’s Classics award this year.

"Some of the burgers are truly over the top, like the $100 Burger that calls for Wagyu brisket and short ribs, foie gras and truffle powder, but most of the recipes look delicious and creative. There are also plenty of recipes for inventive side dishes and toppings like duck fat fries, grilled romaine and dilled salmon roe."
This sounds like something Jack might appreciate, but the common burger lover would likely shun it based on the price tag alone. Frankly, I'd blow it away with 80/20 ground chuck from Harris Teeter, seasoned with salt pepper and hint of garlic, grilled on a Weber with Kingsford charcoal, smothered with BoorsHead yellow American cheese, served on a potato bun slathered with Hellman's mayo, Grey Poupon, and served with fresh onion and tomato.
When you have to hire Tom White...makes you wonder what McD's expected to be up against.
have you guys watched the version of this show where they redo bars? i really like it. they are honest but i feel they are kind. my understanding was that the chappys show was mean spirited and i dont like shows like that.
The expose on the lunch versus dinner pricings for the same portions is probably unrecoverable, but Chappy made a total fool of himself by blaming Nashville tastes for his failures, and describing Nashville as burgers and barbecue. What a ridiculously ignorant and arrogant insult. The guy is obviously someone who got away with whatever he fantabulized through sheer intimidation in his Mississippi setting, and found the kharma chickens came home to roost when he moved here. The only other thing I wish GR had done was to take him to Bro's and then ask him how long they've been in Nashville, and how much he had to 'dumb down' his cuisine to suit Nashville's tastes. Or heck, he could have taken him to Prince's and asked Ms Andre how much she has 'dumbed down' her chicken to suit those same timid tastes. Clearly, that line at Prince's must just be for the fries and the pickle.
Flannel shirts and raw wood weren't what Chappy's needed, but a real chef would have helped. Not gonna happen in this lifetime...I am curious if any of the servers left (or were asked to leave) after the big showdown. That wasn't received well, I'm sure.
They should have burned the "clown pants" when they had the chance.
I have no dog in this fight but I watched the episode tonight. I don't appreciate Chappy blaming Nashvillians' tastes for disliking his food. If I may I be so bold I think all southerners love cajun cuisine. Who among us isn't excited to be invited to a crawfish boil? While cajun food has it's roots in the deep south/Gulf, I think all southerners love it.
I finally got to watch the episode on DVR. A couple thoughts: first of all, the frequent prominent placement of the Scene "Best of" award was...unfortunate. But at least it was a Reader's Award and not an Editor's Pick, so that's on y'all. 8^)
And the random man on the street interview with passers by that included Matt Bolus, one of my favorite extremely talented Nashville chefs? I gotta call shenanigans on that one.
Went over at lunch today and it's pretty darn good. Between us, we had the brisket sandwich, wings and pork sandwich. both the brisket and pork were really good but the wings were a pleasant surprise. I was expecting more of a smoked wing like Smoking Monday at the Corner Pub in Green Hills - which are exceptional. These were more bbq'd, if that makes any sense. They had a little bark, came sausy but not sticky. Really, really good. We had two sides, slaw and fries and they were both good but nothing outstanding. They've expanded their saused since you were there, Chris, and have 4-5. Took a small sample of each and thought they were good. Ended up switching between the hot and the Carolina vinegar. All in all, really good food and the staff went out of their way to help us. We'll be back - soon.
Re: “Wandering Wino: Better Find a DD Edition”
I was sad to show up for Hoyt's 360 Bistro tasting last night at 6:30 (based on this post) only to discover that it actually started at 6pm : (
