Re: “Hey, Ladies, Here's the Growing List of Things to Avoid Should You Want to Stay Alive

"so there just happen to be a lot of mentally ill men running around shooting people, and it's totally a coincidence that they shoot women who made them angry?"

Duh. Normal people don't usually shoot people that make them angry.

Re: “Hey, Ladies, Here's the Growing List of Things to Avoid Should You Want to Stay Alive

As long as we don't have stricter gun laws that prevent nuts with anger management issues from getting their hands on firearms, any public gathering is potentially dangerous.

Neither the Lafayette shooter nor Ryan Lanza should have had access to any guns. I don't know where the Layfayette shooter got his, but Ryan's mother kept a small arsenal in her home legally and paid for that bad decision with her life. I feel sorrier for the parents and loved ones of the children and adults her son killed on his rampage. How do we hold gun owners responsible for giving another person who shouldn't have had access to firearms easy access?

The best advice I've ever heard is to listen to the little visceral voice inside your head that tells you to steer clear of/not meet the eyes of/stay out of the way of/avoid any sort of contact with someone. Since I don't want to live in fear, that's what I'm doing.

Except, Inglewood, if you're white you're far more likely to be victimized by another white person.

Try again.

Given her controversial history, I can not see Huff as being acceptable at this time. That being said I am NOT comfortable with the interim director. he needs to NOT make directional changes for the program and just operate as a glorified care taker.

Re: “Hey, Ladies, Here's the Growing List of Things to Avoid Should You Want to Stay Alive

I went to enjoy the downtown scene this weekend.

We were walking down Broadway looking for a restaurant.

Then a middle-aged black man started walking behind us.

I resented that it bothered me so much. Why Broadway? Why behind us? What's my strategy if he approaches me?

I knew it was unfair, but this is the world that whites live in.

I'm so fucking tired of it, and I'm especially tired of so many black people's energies going into telling whites they're wrong instead of working on changing the behavior of *other blacks.*

It's a little known fact but yesterday over 42 million middle age white men in America did not rape or kill anyone.

Oh, Buckley, if you have a guaranteed test to identify rapists prior to their committing a rape, please share with us! You'd be such a hero!
-------------------------------------

No, JimmyNashville, I can actually read, which I challenge you to do here in this . http://www.davidlisak.com/wp-content/uploa…

In case you don't click here's the relevant line: "Yet, studies of unreported rape, mainly on college samples, indicate that from 6% to 14.9% of men report acts that meet legal definitions for rape or attempted rape." So, you know, I actually low-balled it for you.

Oh, and here's a second study for you (relevant line is: "of the 865 total attempted or completed rapes these men admitted to, a staggering 95% were committed by 96 men, or just 8.4% of the sample.")

And here's the reference: https://yesmeansyesblog.wordpress.com/2009…

Re: “Looney Turns Down MNPS, Will Remain in Williamson County

Well, one good thing came out of this...at least Williamson County knows it doesn't now have to go through the same painful process that continues to face Metro...

Re: “Hey, Ladies, Here's the Growing List of Things to Avoid Should You Want to Stay Alive

I went to see Trainwreck this weekend.

We settled into the middle of the back row ready for previews.

Then a middle-aged white man came in alone and sat at the end of our aisle.

I resented that it bothered me so much. Why the end of the aisle? Why the back? What's my exit strategy if it comes to that?

I knew it was unfair, but this is the world that women live in. We not only have the same crime fears men have, but we get the extra added danger of being targeted for who we are.

I'm so fucking tired of it, and I'm especially tired of so many men's energies going into telling women they're wrong instead of working on changing the behavior of *other men.*

I think Megan writes this stuff just so she can tweet disparaging remarks about the commenters.

Next, a Scene staffer other than Concertina or Anglrider will come on and dis us for anonymous posting.

Re: “Hey, Ladies, Here's the Growing List of Things to Avoid Should You Want to Stay Alive

So Perry, if we disagree with anything about how Megan developed her thesis, we want women murdered?

That kind of shit is really beneath you.

Re: “Hey, Ladies, Here's the Growing List of Things to Avoid Should You Want to Stay Alive

Oh Perry... you silly, sad, absolutist straw-man you. No one has condoned the abuse and murder of women. That's patently absurd.

5-8%???? Good lord man! Are you some deranged Vandy Woman's Studies professor or just the product of one? How do you have such a warped perspective about your fellow man?

"They look and feel and sound and smell and taste exactly like all the other M&Ms in there."

This is where your analogy goes awry.

Re: “Hey, Ladies, Here's the Growing List of Things to Avoid Should You Want to Stay Alive

Suppose we agreed that just 5-8% of all men were murderers/rapists. Most of them are just fine.

Suppose I give you a big bowl of M&Ms. 5-8% of them are full of a swift, deadly poison. They look and feel and sound and smell and taste exactly like all the other M&Ms in there. But they will kill you in a heartbeat.

Now go ahead. Take a big handful and enjoy them. Or just pick one and enjoy it. Recommend some to your sister and your friends.

Don't be afraid! Most of them are just fine.

Hey Scene, great coverage of the mayor's race. Pretty sad that you're getting lapped by the Tennessean while wasting time on worthless drivel like this.

Yes, my error. Megan's post.

My points stand. JimmyNashville seems to think that men who abuse and kill women are not really a problem. As usual, he is absolutely wrong.

Re: “Looney Turns Down MNPS, Will Remain in Williamson County

Jim,

I agree with you about the search firm. But, to my point, this Board hired the firm. This Board hired at least one firm of consultants and then buried their report. Too much independence is not healthy in any branch of government.

As for Charter Schools, not all of them are for profit. Certainly not in Metro. And do you deny that some of the Charters have been successful?

Besides, in Metro, one can make the case that the magnet schools do more damage to the other public schools than charters do. Why not get rid of the Magnets?

Btw don't even get me started on the unprofessionalism of the anonymous sexual impropriety tip. It was from Hunter?
