Re: “Sidewalks, or the Lack Thereof

I am also puzzled by the amount of energy/resources going into making existing sidewalks a little bit better instead of putting in new ones where they're needed.

Re: “Sidewalks, or the Lack Thereof

Twenty years ago after widening Brick Church Pike the city built a sidewalk from Trinity Lane to Ewing Drive. That’s almost three miles of political favor that collectively has served less than 100 people in the interim. A far greater possibility would be it has promoted a Marco Polo trade route for prostitution & drugs from Talbot’s Corner to the middle school & businesses along the way – provided of course, people actually ventured out of said establishments.
In the old days folks walked on the sidewalk. Not so nowadays, particularly in East Nashville wherein you’re far more likely to encounter couples mindlessly pushing baby strollers in the middle of the street or worse, that ever special weekly occasion of large groups of joggers running up & down the avenues. I suppose Shelby Park is just too dang dangerous with all of those cyclists barreling down the pathways.
I find it the epitome of this bizzaro world full of opprobrious, selfish behavior. Maybe that’s the engineer in me or more likely, we were simply taught better…..

Re: “Barbic Frustrated His Former Charter is Pulling Out of Memphis

After the floods in N. O. most (90%) of all public schools are charters; a huge success for the students.

JC, tell me again the charters are profit making. A school board member says they are not and goes on to say it is against state law.

Re: “Sidewalks, or the Lack Thereof

Downtown is full of sidewalks, but they're still dangerous because of the risk of getting run over from behind by some yahoo riding his bicycle on the sidewalk who believes he has the right of way.

Re: “Sarah Martin Kicks Off Run To Address District 5 'Divide'

It's interesting to see a minority doctor classified as middle class and then quoted as not wanting economic diversity in his/her neighborhood.

Yeah, I get it. You have loans.

Re: “Sidewalks, or the Lack Thereof

"Curb cuts for a new driveway? Easy! It's just in the city right of way, so we can just start paving tomorrow! Let me handle the permit for you. Oh, hey, do you need a couple more?"

"Sidewalks? Oh, man. That's in the city right of way, but we need to impanel a committee to discuss the impact... we'll talk about it in (checks watch) let's say 8 months."

Re: “Sidewalks, or the Lack Thereof

Amen. Nashville has a long history of praising the mayors who avoid the easy and necessary in order to get their names on the plaques of the difficult and unnecessary. There is no reason for a lack of sidewalks, the abundance of leaky school roofs, overcrowded classrooms in Antioch, lack of buses on needed routes, EPA defying stormwater issues, and shortage of libraries in the communities while convention centers, downtown libraries, amphitheaters, central bus terminals, landports, tax financed hotels, and minor league baseball stadiums get approved and celebrated.

Nashville loves celebrations, but only when they can be downtown near the bars. No celebration and ribbon cuttings photo-op, no money, no matter the actual need. No one celebrates the building of sidewalks near our communities except us peons in those communities.

Re: “Sidewalks, or the Lack Thereof

Since building sidewalks is very easy and funding is never a problem, this should have been done 15 years ago. Building them now just makes me violently ill.

I agree with the point Betsy so often makes; Nashville sucks.

The next mayor, and probably all of the candidates, will learn soon enough (if they don't know already) to avoid the nuttiness that is Stacy Harris at all costs.

Karl Dean had a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the sidewalk on Harding Pl, IIRC

Re: “Sidewalks, or the Lack Thereof

I agree completely about the need for sidewalks. But I fail to see where anyone is "patting ourselves on the back" for building them. Show me a statement by someone that sounds like back-patting.

Of course the WKRN story irks you. Practically everything does.

Re: “Sidewalks, or the Lack Thereof

A lack of sidewalks and an overall refusal to cite people for failing to yield to pedestrians at crosswalks makes this city incredibly unsafe for pedestrians. Shit old women get taken out by 18-wheelers while sleeping in their beds. Head on a swivel, yall.

Re: “Barbic Frustrated His Former Charter is Pulling Out of Memphis

Seems like the charter school was deferring to community and political wishes. That is what we want, right?,

Charters that operarte with support from the community succeed, those without support do not.

Doesn't seem like an issue to me.
