As a native Atlantan (who went to high school with Mr. Foxworthy), a Nashville resident, with redneck roots and a Vanderbilt degree ... this topic is so loaded for me I can't even muster a concise response.
I will say this: Jeff himself gives this simple definition: It is a "glorious lack of sophistication." He also points out that rednecks exist everywhere -- there are just as many rednecks in Idaho or Illinois (I know, I spent a summer in rural IL) as there are in any southern state.
looks like fun!

Who is Natalie Grigson and why is anyone supposed to care?
She keeps using that word. I do not think it means what she thinks it means.
I will say this in favor of my many redneck friends. When the pressure is on and something breaks down (like the lawnmower) or there is physical work to be done, give me a good ole redneck boy any day of the week to get the job done over his genteel, perhaps better educated cousin. Not many people are all good or all bad, and being a redneck is no great sin and now since I live in Nashville I find that I may even be a redneck. Yee Ha!
Commenting here must be zoombah's great joy in life. He's so often the first one. He must get up every morning, put on his Capt. Kirk outfit (after sleeping in his Kirk pajamas) and can hardly wait to come here and start commenting and showing what an asshole he is. Pith makes every morning like Christmas for little zoombah. It's so cute.
Jeebus. I read her list. What an idiot.
I totally love this. Thank you. And over here in Memphis, we're all thugs.
Let Grigson propagate the myths if it stops more people like her from moving here.
Jim Collins has displayed an alarming lack of sanity in every single one of his posts. He has also admitted that he owns weapons.
Nuff said.
Zoombah has a rather IGNOMINIOUS distinction when it comes to sex education. It seems he learned it single handed, so to speak. Hence his opinions might be rather convoluted and without benefit of experience, so to speak!
So, I guess if you live in Nashville, it automatically makes you a redneck. How does that make all you fellow mouthbreathers feel?
Doubt it David. This gaudily made up fat ass product of mindless indoctrination by various Florida based religious schools, has illustrated her ignorance by public prejudice against both GLBT citizens and Islamic Americans. She is unfortunately all to typical of Chritianist extremism and far more dangerous to the protections of our constitution than any fictional pro Shariah Law efforts in this country.
little bobby popgun: Dad was only born in Cheatham County (shortly after hthe family moved to a Robertson County farm) and he didn't have any sisters, hence your "inbreeding" scenario is flawed! But thank you for your concern about my proud parentage!
464 ZMB; To ascribe the label of "liberal" to those who fought for the North during the Southern Rebellion, is to be totally ignorant of the political situation. That being said, if being opposed to slavery is the hallmark of liberalism, that should really be considered a positive even among all but the most inconsiderate conservative. Also considering that both Sherman and Sheridan were Conservative Pro-Business Republican supporters of Grant (even though Sherman had a history of madness). Your misunderstanding of the philosophy of the liberal mindset needs much correction, as does your supposition I am dense! Stubborn without a doubt, but rather well educated and devout in my opinions, but still open to discourse from those who honestly desire it!
Ironically, TNGA Rep. Andy Holt --- winner of the Tennessee Farm Bureau "Excellence in Agriculture" award --- was ditching the Tennessee House of Representatives during January 2012 to take advantage of a all-expenses paid vacation to Hawaii, courtesy of the Farm Bureau at the time of these alleged complaints against Rep. Holt's farming operations.
It appears that the Tennessee Farm Bureau either has a very low qualifying threshold for "Excellence in Agriculture" or that the TFB was already aware of the complaints filed against Holt and his farming operations, and/or decided to award Rep. Holt with the "Excellence in Agriculture" award and Hawaiian vacation on the basis that Holt was a member of the Tennessee General Assembly.
How the Tennessee Bureau of Ethics director Drew Rawlins failed to make that connection is beyond my thinking, unless Rawlins was himself unaware of the complaints alleged and filed against Rep. Andy Holt's farming operations. The question now is "what did Rawlins know and when did he know it?"...
Please tell me this guy is not related to the Great President of UT with the same name.
Negative xray/zoombah/gastthemia/vladthecowardlyanonymous: I simply offered for you to take your obvious frustrations of my POV out on me in person. perhaps we could sit and discuss Descartes, Camus, John Locke and other points of philosophy. perhaps we could put a face to your generous sharing of your gracious debating style. That is unless you prefer to stay cowardly incognito. Would you feel any more secure if your friend bobsguns were invited also? I certainly mean no malice, just a face to face exchange of ideas!
My bravado is a matter of record, not speculation!
BTW: I type in silence, poorly perhaps, but in complete silence!
@Jim Collins (who grunts when he types): Did you just threaten me with violence as you ignored the truth of my previous comment listing the chronology of insults? Now it should be clear to everyone why a non-liberal posting on Pith best remain anonymous.
>>Jim, are you really as dense as you appear in this post?<<
Yes, he is. He's the result of generations of Cheatham Co. inbreeding among brothers & sisters........... ;)
Re: “We Might Be Rednecks, Natalie Grigson Might Be a Dumbass”
Of course Grigson is a self-styled elitist and a fool. But if she were even an occasional reader of Pith, it would be hard not to understand her conclusions. After all, the Pithmeisters love nothing more than characterizing every aspect of life in Nashville that does not involve their lives as 'redneck' or worse. For example:
Religion. Does Pith ever consider all the excellent charitable work done by conservative churches in this area? No. They are too busy characterizing every church that they think of as 'conservative' as a gang of snake-handlers.
Politics. Again, there is never positive coverage of any conservative politicians and a constant stream of coverage characterizing them and their supporters as rednecks.
And on and on. Is it any wonder that bigots like Grigson regard Nashville as redneck? I am sure that she would think herself not too superior to be damaged by associating with the Pithsters and that she would be shocked that your response would be so provincial.
"Apparently Grigson is unfamiliar with the idea that it's OK for people within an insult's target group to use that insult with each other, but it's not cool for people outside that group to decide they can use a slur because they don't mean it in a bad way."
Less an Idea than a way for people on the Left to play 'language police' on others while tolerating the use of the same words and phrases by protected groups.
Use of certain words and phrases should either be tolerated for all or not tolerated for a few. It doesn't work both ways at the same time.
