Re: “School Board Chair Calls Emergency Meeting On Alleged Open Meeting Violation

Let's go deeper and deeper into allegations of secret deliberations. Did Zack Barnes coordinate the filing of this complaint with any board members?

Re: “Supreme Court Strikes Down Same Sex Marriage Bans

Well Bob, you know Obama is going to invade Tennessee any minute now, right after Tejas and South Carolina. Just ask AWP, he is leading the resistance along with yoyo and his sock puppet army.

Bad jokes aside, I imagine the right is have an apoplexy right about now, given recent court rulings and the bedrocks of the Old Confederacy removing their battle flag from their state house, or at least claiming to. I won't believe it till I see it given that all are engaged in what could be superficial rhetoric and chicanery.
Perhaps the days of institutional racism is drawing it's last breath, likely in favor of the apparent war on the poor being raged by the GOP. More money in that!

Re: “The Confederate Flag Is Still for Sale on Lower Broadway

Northern aggression????

I guess the preservation of the Union had no place at the table, nor did the fact that southern rebels fired with upon federal territory at Fort Sumter unprovoked (other than by the results of an election). That seems to me to be southern aggression.

Look my ancestors fought and died for the glorious cause also, one in fact was prevented from coming home to Smith County till pardoned by Governor Brownlow. But both they and I have gotten over it and have moved on.
That flag that you pledge such proud love for offends a significant portion of my neighbors and friends, not to mention the general population that I CHOOSE not to fly it. As I have said prior, if that is your cup o'tea, fly it, paint it on your car, tattoo it on your ass for all the world to see. But state and local government have no right to distress their citizenry by what has been co-opted into a symbol of racist hate and violence on those same citizens tax supported government property.

Jamie: "A complaint filed with the Tennessee Office of Open Records Counsel alleges both Anna Shepherd and Jill Speering engaged Jo Ann Brannon outside an open meeting about Steele's appointment." Amy Frogge and Will Pinkston were not alleged.

Wingnuts on talk radio are already calling for Tennessee to leave the Union and fight the Civil War again. Good luck with that one, wingnuts.

Re: “Supreme Court Strikes Down Same Sex Marriage Bans

Thanks, Min. I'm going to find that on YouTube right now.

During the past week, in the context of Charleston, I've been thinking of a speech Robert Kennedy gave to a white business audience the day after MLK was murdered. Some of those words seem appropriate today, too:

"We can perhaps remember, if only for a time, that those who live with us are our brothers and sisters, that they share with us the same short moment of life; that they seek, as we do, nothing but the chance to live out their lives in purpose and in happiness, wining what satisfaction and fulfillment they can."

Today is beautiful. =

Re: “School Board Chair Calls Emergency Meeting On Alleged Open Meeting Violation

Mark: Henry IS correct, so your gnashing of teeth and self flagellation have no basis. Neither does your hyperbolic character assassination against two elected officials whom you predictably fail to favor.

Look. Pinkston is a bit of a firebrand, but given the privately well financed attack on MNPS in favor of what amounts to dissolving equal access to education in Metro Nashville, perhaps a firebrand is just what is needed to protect the least of us from the dreaded rejuvenation of "separate but unequal". One should not be surprised by your attacks on him and Amy Frogge given they are the main blocks to state and commercial enterprise's privatization of our public school system in part or total.
Given your political zeal, there is a short string to follow to determine your stand on this seizure of the public trust for financial advantage. I would suggest that if you feel so very outraged (enough to slander two fine people with your vitriol) you might have the courage of your convictions to either sue or run for the school board, that is if you actually have legal standing and eligibility.

I was playing Nanci Griffith's version of "If I Had a Hammer" in my office today. It seemed appropriate.

Re: “Supreme Court Strikes Down Same Sex Marriage Bans

The Beatles' "Here, There and Everywhere" came to mind today. Used to sing that with my sibling, who is perhaps aware of this hope fulfilled. It took too long to get here, but things will get better now. A new peace of mind.

Re: “Supreme Court Strikes Down Same Sex Marriage Bans

I do not believe that this was ever about the Rights of Gays and Lesbians, Definition of marriage, Family Values, Separation of Church and State or what someone thinks is morally right.
The real reason has been hidden behind the attack on ones beliefs, church, God, Country, and emotions
It was and always has been about Money and the denial of citizens their rights to save the government and Corporate America Billions of dollars by denying benefits to everyone that has paid for those benefits.
Money is the route of all evil not sexual orientation.

Re: “School Board Chair Calls Emergency Meeting On Alleged Open Meeting Violation

I like the hybrid approach. It's a little dangerous but probably doable. A board appointed by the mayor puts all the pressure on the mayor to be respondent to the community and puts more power in the hands our councilman with the power of the purse. Either approach brings more transparency to the conversation.

In this current configuration, there is no accountability and our children and community deserve better.

Re: “The Confederate Flag Is Still for Sale on Lower Broadway

Hey I fly my flag proudly as my ancestors fought and died under that flag. We still have my great great grandfathers flag who served under the confederacy along with African Americans. Its our history its not racism. The civil war was about northern aggression. We wanted our freedom in the south and shows every time there is an election. So do yalls homework and really read about what created the civil war. Also Google the church shooting in baton rouge, la this past Sunday. you don't see that plastered all over TV, I wonder why.

Re: “School Board Chair Calls Emergency Meeting On Alleged Open Meeting Violation

Henry is probably correct.

The School Board has been dysfunctional for too long.

There are two reforms that need to be made asap.

1) Give the Metro Council limited control over the Board's ability to change its approved budget. Any changes over $50,000 to a single line item from what the Council voted would require Council approval.

2) Allow the Mayor and the Council two appointees each to the Board. That would increase it to 13. The appointees would be 1/3 of the Board but would reflect the views of someone other than the special interests who control School Boars elections. Different special interests to be sure but that would reflect on the Mayor and Council and they need more influence on the Board.

Re: “School Board Chair Calls Emergency Meeting On Alleged Open Meeting Violation

So, there is no evidence of conversations about this subject actually happening, but people are known to have been in the same building at certain times, or to have spoken to each other on occasion about unknown topics, so an ethics violation is alleged? This complaint sounds like a total sideshow.

Re: “School Board Chair Calls Emergency Meeting On Alleged Open Meeting Violation

Baby-

They were accused. Is this what you were talking about?

" She said she knew nothing about the specific allegations against Brannon, Shepherd and Speering but said"

It sounds like she does know something about the specific allegations against the two not mentioned, but can't be sure of allegations against the three she named.

Re: “School Board Chair Calls Emergency Meeting On Alleged Open Meeting Violation

Even if the law was violated, all they need to do is take another vote. It will presumably come out the same way.
