Re: “Beer Expert Stephen Beaumont to Present Dinner Pairings at Flying Saucer

I love beer and food, and I love them paired well together, but I *really wish* this event was *anywhere* but the Flying Saucer? There are so many great beer venues in town (breweries, what up!) that have better prices, better food, and a better atmosphere that though the event sounds amazing, I just straight up wouldn't go.

:( Come on, Beaumont. You're better than overpriced chains.

Re: “Chicago‚Äôs Doughnut Vault Headed to the Gulch

That's a long time to wait, but the doughnuts are off the chain there, so there's that.

@loveandnachos Darn it! If only I'd been able to publish this a day or so earlier, I could have taken credit!

Re: “New Wine and Spirits Shop to Open in the Gulch

Congrats, Ed! I've enjoyed working with Ed Fryer for eight years on the d'Vine Selections Wine Tasting event that benefits Ronald McDonald House Charities of Nashville. Ed works tirelessly to make it an awesome event each year and we love seeing his successes. Shameless plug for d'Vine Selections (Fri., Nov. 14 from 6 to 9pm at Nashville Farmers' Market) - you can buy tickets at https://secure.sitemason.com/site/bmtCuc/d… now through 11/14 at noon or at the door.

Re: “America, Pho Yeah

They really need to improve the pho-king graphic in the middle of their pho-king logo if they truly want to amp up the double entendre possibilities...

Re: “The Sweet Spot: Limited-Edition Halloween Candy

@brandon Megan claims to like those two. Grody. This experiment was my least favorite sweets-related experiment, but I still kind of enjoyed it. Bring on the Xmas onslaught of peppermint-flavored everything! (MINT CHOCOLATE IS MY FAVORITE FLAVOUR)

Re: “The Weekly Open Thread: What's Your Favorite Apple?

@S L -- I just saw organic Granny Smith apples at The Turnip Truck in the Gulch, and some of the apples were small, but some were larger.

Also, that same store has been selling Cox's Orange Pippin, which I believe is an heirloom, proto-variety of Pippin.

It's hysterical if you are so dense you feel the need to point that out.

Re: “The Weekly Open Thread: What's Your Favorite Apple?

Macintosh used to be my favorite--I lived in Michigan as a young child, and we would go to the local Mac orchard for cider and picking every autumn.

And then, as a teen, I moved from the macs of my childhood to Golden Delicious. Now, as a middle ager, I am a jonagold fan, which is a hybrid of Golden Delicious and Johnathans--their flesh is firmer than Golden Delicious, which tends toward mealiness much out of season, and a wonderful sweet-tartness. Also, they're juicy without dripping down your elbows so.

Re: “Day of the Dead Tequila Festival Hits East Nashville

Actually, part of the DotD observance in Mexico involves bringing the decedents' favorite foods and drinks to the cemetery as an offering, so bottles of tequila, mezcal and pulque are part of the festivities. I personally don't think this is nearly as offensive as going to a gringo party sponsored by Bud/Miller/Coors on Cinco de Mayo and thinking it's "the Mexican Fourth of July."
