As a long-time football nut, allow me to opine on both.
Can someone explain to me WHY VU cannot recruit the Ensworth/MBA/Brentwood Academy/Riverdale pipeline? Can VU NOT get a 1/2 way decent QB that CAN throw the GD ball? Aside from Cutler, one has to go back to Whit Taylor to find a good throwing VU QB, IMO.
I find it hard to believe VU can't recruit SEC-worthy players from Alcoa, Maryville, Rutherford Co., etc. Yes, not all might wish to come to VU nor perhaps will all academically qualify. But for god's sakes, at least TRY.
The Titans never seem to be able to grab their ass with both hands. Only during the McNair/George/Bishop era did the Titans seem to be balanced on talent. We get a good QB & we have a weak o-line. We had a good o-line & we had VY. We get a decent d-line & we're weak on DB's. LB's seem to be hit or miss, one gets good & we lose one or two to retirement (Bulluck) or injury.
I'm SO disappointed in the Titans. I see teams like the Packers, Pats, Steelers, etc. be much better than average year after year after year. Meanwhile the Titans have a 9-6 season followed by a 5-10 season followed by another 9-6 season.
To quote a Vince Lombardi line on NFL Films, "What the hell is going on out there???!!!!"

Regardless of who is QB, the o-line & CJ seem to guarantee yet another 8-8 or 9-7 season, IMO.
The o-line has two fine tackles but are way too weak up the middle for the NFL. Time will tell if the new guard will help much. Here's hoping Bruce Mathews can make shinola out of shit................

Seriously, the only way to air the Olympics anymore is live. This is not America circa 1942, where we're all waiting to receive word from the warfront huddled around our radios.
It doesn't matter what time zone the Games are being held in, compared to when it would air here. People are blitzed with information 24 hours a day on cable netorks or social media or smart phones, etc. While I do like watching the events live...I also like watching the events without knowning the outcome.
The reason why NBC has high ratings in the evening isn't because that's just when everyone "gets off work & watches tv." It is because NBC is forcing everyone to watch when they choose to air it. There is no alternative...& save your breath with online viewing. It isn't the same thing than watching it live on a 50" plasma.
The final nail in the coffin was when Olympic history was made as Michael Phelps broke the record for most medals in the history of the Games. WE MISSED IT BECAUSE THEY CHOSE NOT TO AIR IT LIVE. That is unforgivable.

Actually, Mr. Lind, I believe it was the pre-draft physical that revealed the Mr. Dickey was missing a ligament from his arm. That cost him untold millions of $$, dropping him from a sure fire 1st round pick to a mid- to late round pick.
I'm sure all of Nashville is both proud of & happy for Mr. Dickey. He took the bad draft news with class & dignity (at least in public). He also worked his butt off when his usual assortment of pitches didn't get the job done against major league batters.
Hats off to a well deserving young man who is a fine example of both Nashville & UT. May he pitch as long as he wants to!

An artistic knuckleball, served up to steroid, testosterone saturated cudgel swingers of major league baseball, travelling a path that can be compared somewhat to a slightly cooked spaghetti string pushed uphill, is truly a thing of beauty. It's also an indication that the deliverer has grown inevitably, intelligently, out of the age bracket featuring obsessive fascination with heat and smoke.
Go for it old boy. Hell, your career in the show could be another ten or twelve years. Look at Hoyt Wilhelm. And a trip to Cooperstown just might be your reward at the end of things.
That'd be nice for one of our own. Yeah! Yeah! Yeah!

Fair article, with a twinge of pity, but somewhat outdated. After restructuring, GM is making money again, and adding shifts at plants in Michigan. Garbage fires? Yeah, there are fires in Detroit daily, and some of them are controlled burns by filmmakers. They love the city and have done a lot of filming there in the last few years. We'll see how much the decreased tax incentives affect filming. Time will tell. As for the "mass exodus," a little perspective is required. The city now has less than a million people, losing 25% in 10 years. This still leaves more people in the CITY of Detroit than in Davidson County. The suburbs are integral to Detroit, and there are over 3 and half million people in the rest of Wayne county, and bordering counties. My point? There are still people here--a lot of them. As for Detroit's best days being behind it, I'm sure that was said decades ago after the race riots. I don't think that is up to you, or me to determine. It is, however, certainly an uncharitable thing to declare about a city that is restructuring...and walking on crutches.
I hope you never have to experience what Detroit did--families fleeing to the suburbs and surrounding counties to leave the the city to be run by crooked politicians and inept school board members, while its architectural jewels lay in ruin. It's ripe though, ripe for an influx of new immigrants to claim the city and make it their own. Maybe Russian hockey players. :) Just wait and see...there's another Detroit to come.

Just a heads up on the comment that "Heck, even Kid Rock moved to Nashville." Kid Rock actually recently purchased a home in the actual downtown area of Detroit, and continues to have his main home in Clarkston, MI. Yes, he does have a place in Nashville and also Mailbu but he is still the "Son of Detroit"

Locker has a bright future if he keeps developing his throwing accuracy, and he's been effective in his 2 relief appearances---- but remember he was inserted against defenses that had gameplanned for Hasselbeck (much more of a traditional pocket passer), and since the Jaguars already have one victory over us this year, it's not a "given" that we're going to beat them without at least an average (and hopefully better-than-average) performance. At least this year, Hasselbeck is still our best option if we want to make the playoffs.

What a great analysis of where Vandy is going-- like Coach Franklin says, "no more talking about the past because it is over."
Yes Vandy was uptight and didn't play well against what everyone says is the worst UT team "in history". Vandy beat themselves and the Rocky-toppers thought they had saved their season.
Well, our true colors showed at Wake Forest-- and we are THE ONLY TEAM IN TENNESSEE going to a bowl!!!
Nearly the same players as last year-- new coaches, new attitude and NEW VANDERBILT!

What a brilliant reporter you are, giving credit where credit is due & tellinf it like it is. We've been Vandy fans for 66 yrs. & never did give up on them, wait till next yr. Well!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that year has come. My husband is not here to see & enjoy this, but my two grown children & myself are carrying it on & I'm sure he hears the cheering where he is! Thank you for writing this article, it should be published in the Tennessean news paper, on the front page.

Well said and right on point. I'm new to Nashville, lived here for almost four years now. I've become a Preds fan because of my love for the game of hockey, not because of any personalities on the team. I'm still lukewarm about the Titans because fans are lukewarm about the Titans, local media is lukewarm about the Titans, and the Titans are lukewarm about winning. A little swagger and snarl is what I'd like to see.
