Re: “The Hoarders Method of Housekeeping

When my grandmother died a couple of months ago, it took my parents, my uncle, my aunt and my grandfather, plus assorted other people, days and days to go through all the stuff that she had "put away" for "safe-keeping" or "just in case" or because she forgot she already had multiples. My father now says that he wants to stick to a policy of getting rid of one thing for every new thing that he buys. He just has to sell my mother on that policy. And he's trying to get me on board, too, because, "After all, Jennifer, one day it's going to be YOU who's going to have to go through all our stuff!" Ack!! I'll call Mom right away!

Re: “The Hoarders Method of Housekeeping

Ha ha, that's true- You DEFINITELY can't eat while watching Hoarders!

My friend was telling me about one episode I haven't yet seen, where they found a dead cat with a horrified expression on its face that had been crushed by stuff. EWWW.

Re: “The Hoarders Method of Housekeeping

I feel the exact same way about Hoarders. I actually had this conversation with my husband. It also keeps me from snacking while watching it--imagining the smells...

Re: “The Hoarders Method of Housekeeping

I really like this post. It's interesting to think about the effect that TV has on us, too. I am a reformed minor hoarder. My husband cured me. Every once and awhile we start wondering where that card table/ratty chair/old toy went, but even then we congratulate ourselves for "over purging." I'm converted. If you haven't seen this, this is my latest obsession: Getting Things Done (organizational self help book). http://jacoblawrencenewman.blogspot.com/

Re: “The Hoarders Method of Housekeeping

I am a hoarder in just two rooms of my house. The rest of the house? Fine. But open my bedroom door or the art studio door, and it's all over. I've tried hard to not watch Hoarders because I'm afraid of what I'll learn about myself.

Re: “The Hoarders Method of Housekeeping

I tried flylady too, but there are only so many "LOL"s I can take in one e-mail. Flylady causes email clutter. LOL.

Re: “The Hoarders Method of Housekeeping

Actually, I use Hoarders as a diet program. There's definately no after dinner snacking for me while watching that show.

Re: “The Hoarders Method of Housekeeping

I did a yard sale here ONCE. And that was it. I worked so hard to make everything presentable and had great deals- Unworn Kate Spade shoes for $2! An antique trunk for $30! NOTHING sold except random stuff like an ice cream maker and a dehumidifier. TOTALLY not worth my time.

I've eBayed stuff a few times and that works much better, except then you have to deal with a-holes who won't pay for your items after bidding on them. Goodwill really is the way to go. I'd rather make extra money doing random freelance work every so often than go through the headache of trying to sell it myself.

Re: “The Hoarders Method of Housekeeping

There's a guy in Las Vegas that "lost" his wife to hoarding. Literally. He couldn't find her body amongst the clutter.

Re: “The Hoarders Method of Housekeeping

My husband and I stumbled upon a marathon of Hoarders one night a few weeks ago and...holy crap. In one of them, this elderly lady and her more elderly father couldn't reach the bathroom anymore, so they had been using the bathroom in plastic bags and throwing them up the stairs. I was so appalled I couldn't look away! For like the next four hours!

And I had the exact same reaction as you - once the marathon was over I went and cleaned my kitchen.

Re: “The Hoarders Method of Housekeeping

HAHA!! I love how they put the OCD Project right before or after Hoarders a lot of times. Totally balances me out.

Re: “The Hoarders Method of Housekeeping

LOL...the show has the exact opposit effect on me. I use the show to make me not feel guilty about the 4 boxes of kids stuff I've been meaning to consign for the past two years. Now I can tell myself, "So what if I trip over them every single morning, the rest of my house is livable, and no where near as bad as THAT!"

Re: “The Hoarders Method of Housekeeping

I've been wanting to have a yard sale since we moved into a smaller house two years ago :( still I haven't motivated myself. Its too hot or raining or wow its a perfect day this Saturday, Why waste it on work? Goodwill will be seeing me every week for a while too! Thanks for the inspiration!

Re: “The Hoarders Method of Housekeeping

i have a friend from pakistan that summed it up so well.
"i'll never understand how you Americans have $150 worth of stuff in your garages and leave your $40,000 vehicles in your driveways."
guilty.
having a yard sale in two weeks. if i didn't need to raise money for a cause i would be at knoxville area rescue ministries with my truckloads in a donation-minute.
i hope i survive the experience.

Re: “The Hoarders Method of Housekeeping

I live in a 2 bedroom condo with attached garage that gets our overflow. With 2 kids, one dog and 3 cats we have to keep a really organized home or I'd probably lose it! But I never go into the garage because it's a scary overflow of boxes. Earlier this year I realized we had been hoarding old bills from 7 years back! While it's amusing to see the cost of goods on old bank statements it's completely unnecessary so we dumped 3 file boxes.

Re: “The Hoarders Method of Housekeeping

I saw one episode a couple of years ago - that was enough, LOL. Sometime between June and September next year I intend to buy a condo, so I started decluttering several months ago. Geez, I live alone and have limited storage, but there's a lot of stuff here that other people would be blessed to have. Going to Goodwill twice a month (taking them the extra fall decorations tomorrow) for the next year...
