I was wondering who was still going to video stores :). You can stream Shine and Fresh and Place in the Sun on either itunes or amazon right now for $2.99. I don't miss the video stores at all, now record stores that is a different story....

Every time I hear that school is closed, my thoughts go to all the parents that will have to scramble to find care, or burn a precious sick or vacation day. Perhaps this is why wine was invented?

i feel your pain. as the mother of two young girls--blonde-haired, blue-eyed little drama queens--i am proud of how beautiful and bright they are, yet scared at what the future holds. maybe i'll get the best of both worlds, brains and beauty. while my 7 year old already talks like a valley girl (although we live smack-dab in tennessee) and requested a pair of "jeggings" for christmas ("it's easier to tuck them into my knee boots!") she also loves to read and is completely proper and straight-laced.
only time will tell.

Honestly I grew up with more snow then this and rarely got snow days! We lived in a mountainous area where ice meant inches of ice! Redonkulous!@

"Drooling in the corner"...that's me in a nutshell! I've got a 3-year-old and a 10-month-old and I only get 3 days a week of school (preschool, that is) as it is! Any time the enormous school district in our area is out because of snow, cold, blinding rays of sunshine, etc., our preschool takes the day off as well. No more snow days, please!!

I.hear.you. I work from home so it's nice that I don't have to scramble for child care when it snows but I still have to WORK and can't get enough done. Plus, my son needs the routine of school--I think they all do. I noticed last year that they didn't even make up the snow days, supposedly the were "Built in." Huh?
I feel bad for the teachers, while they enjoy their day off, it puts more pressure on them to keep on schedule with testing, etc.
I'm originally from Chicago so driving in the snow does not intimidate me... Call me too, and I'll pick them up!! I guarantee most parents would find a way. Williamson County has some rural parts but let's use common sense. You live at the top of Lynwood Way? Stay home. Fieldstone Farms? I think you can make it to the nearest schools.

I live in WI and so far we have had ZERO snow days. We've had snow - we've had bitter cold (-12 this morning) but no snow days. I guess the variables are a bit tighter up here! Closing for days on end is unheard of here though and heck - if the plow gets through ONCE - everyone is good to go!

I clicked over here while writing on deadline and trying to entertainment my children during our SNOW DAY (#3 for the year, with 3 additional delays and 2 holidays). All I can say to your column is Amen, sister! i would totally offer to drive in anyone who couldnt just to avoid yet another snow day. my fix to it? i went into work anyway...because the thought of being held up in the the 900 square foot apartment with my knitting was going to send me over the edge...

My kids aren't even asking to go outside today- They're sick of the snow! I don't see a single kid outside playing, and our neighborhood is filled with kids.
And I'll admit that preschool is what's bothering me about this scenario most of all. I just signed Bruiser up for 3 day per week preschool this month. So far with the snow days and holidays, he's been a total of THREE TIMES. And we don't get money back for the missed days. I can't even let myself think about how frustrating this is.

I had JUST put up a facebook status about this very thing. We are in WV and while I definitely agree with the kids fighting, boredom, and just aggravation, my main beef now is that they're losing instruction days! We're in WV and today is snow day #11 for us. I feel like I'm homeschooling with all the online assignments and snow day packets they send home. UGH!!

Heck, I don't have kids, yet even I go stir crazy during those very rare times when we have more than one day off due to snow (Wisconsin here - we're tough, but mostly we have more snow removal equipment than y'all).
Does the school have to make up the missed days? It may be time for the parents to descend on the school board en masse with a more realistic plan for snow events. No reason to keep everyone home if the roads are mostly good.

In South Texas we don't have snow days. We have Hurricane days. Either way, it's the same result. I have 3 little boys, and I feel your pain!
I am not a SAHM, and I will sell a kidney if I have to to avoid ever being a SAHM. I love my children lots and lots. Mostly when we've all had a productive day at school and work. My favoite saying of ALL TIME is "Thank God It's Monday!"
Spring will come again. Don't go all Shining on anyone 'kay?

I AGREE!!!!!! I don't mind the kids getting a break every now and again. But what about us parent's that have to work? Daycare closes when the school closes. So what to do? I understand that there are rural parts of the county that may not be safe for buses but must you punish the masses? I agree if you can make it come on to school or let buses run on snow routes. Once again thanks for giving us desperate housewives a voice.

I LOVE this! I don't even have kids in school yet and I feel ya! Mine are 4 and 5 and they NEED to play outside a LOT. Or, I will go crazy! I love the first day of snow too, but then I like to get back to normal!

I couldn't even tell you the last time I was in a video store. In fact, I've lived in Bellevue for more than three years now, and I never set foot in any of the video stores. I didn't even realize there still was a Blockbuster out here!
But wow, it is weird to think that a phenomenon that was a huge part of my childhood and early adulthood is disappearing. My son doesn't understand that people didn't always get their DVDs from Netflix, or the library, or in a few cases, Target. And when I mentioned once to him that we used to rent video tapes, he looked at me suspiciously. ("Tape? Like the stuff you use to wrap presents?")
But I'm really more upset about bookstores closing up shop. I really need to get out there and just buy some more books already. New books. In person. And um, stop relying on Amazon and McKay's so much...
