Re: “Revived Sutler Saloon Opens in Melrose

What happened to the great catfish sandwich the old Sutler had??? I thought that was mentioned by the restaurant owners as a standout dish that would be returning. The menu looks interesting, but the price point of entrees sets it far beyond the old Sutler; the place seems like it's catering more to foodies now, like too many of Nashville's newer eating haunts. Guess I'll just have to relive my memories.

Re: “Mitchell Deli Team to Open Rudie's Seafood and Sausage

sounds great. i just went to mitchells last week and bought lunch plus some deli meat and bread to make my own sandwiches for future lunches. i actually felt i got a fair price considering the quality of the items.

i will definitely go to the new place. i was just wondering what might go in that space. if you must drink wine then you could always stop in the sushi place or the beer garden prior to your meal.

Re: “The Weekly Open Thread: Fairest of the Pies Edition

I saw a sign this morning in East Nashville where Feast used to be that said Coming soon - The Vine. Maybe this is what you saw?

pro-tip: you can ask about menu options without having to threaten a boycott. that's not necessarily the best first move.

. . . I meant months ago. It just seemed like years watching it go downhill and being more disappointed each time we went.

Sounds great! But with only beer, we won't be coming. Please at least add wine for us non-beer lovers.

Re: “The Weekly Open Thread: Fairest of the Pies Edition

I did encounter something new-to-me at the Fair this year: Frosted FlakeĀ®-encrusted-chicken-on-a-stick. It ended up reminding me more of, hmmm, coconut-fried chicken, that way it tasted sweet and meaty at the same time. When I was done with it, I did declare that I would eat one again if asked. It was nine bucks -- it seemed like a lot to pay but it did feed me for the night; I didn't go back for the doughnut cheeseburger, though I kept saying I was going to.

Nicki, let's talk; I'm hatching a plot to run the table in the Creative Arts categories next year. I'm working on a painting of Jesus cradling a chicken in his arms RIGHT NOW.

I was going to enter this year, but didn't. Next year! (It's my motto-- should embroider it onto a throw pillow.)

Why would they want a judge who can't eat the crust? That doesn't make any sense.

Re: “The Weekly Open Thread: Fairest of the Pies Edition

I keep forgetting to mention this. A few weeks ago my cousin and I tried out Big Shake's Hot Chicken & Fish in Franklin. We split a chicken leg plate and a big basket of wings. They were both excellent. Especially the wings. They were fried without breading and then were seasoned with a spicy dry rub. If you're in the area I would definitely check it out. That is all.

Re: “The Weekly Open Thread: Fairest of the Pies Edition

@james - correct. I'm hopeful that most will be made with butter, but I'm sure there will be at least one with lard. I can still judge it on appearance and can taste the filling, though!

Re: “The Weekly Open Thread: Fairest of the Pies Edition

Since you don't eat bacon, I guess that means no pies that have the crust made with lard? That pure white fat from a pig is pure awesome in a pastry.
