Re: “Neil Young, Billy Gibbons, Brenda Lee and Others to Appear at Musicians Hall of Fame Awards

A friend of mine was inducted the first year. It was the greatest show ever. George Jones performed, Peter Frampton performed, lots of Motown greats, rock greats, and country greats performed. It was a magical night.

Re: “12th and Porter to Close Feb. 28

It pains me to lose another venue to what will surely become some sort of 'luxury' living accommodations. BUT, after many shows and showcases there, my last experience was well over a year ago and terrible. After getting there early, the ass-hat working the door was so slow I missed 75% of the band I had a pre-ordered a ticket for.

"North Gulch", really? This is getting out of hand.

Re: “Five Knives Release Video for 'Sugar'; Blogger Barfs in Own Mouth [Fresh Vid]

Christ almighty.

Forget your genre-bashing, forget who can "sing" and put that "if some pop music gets a pass, all pop music gets a pass" back in the dumpster behind the Genius Bar where you found it.

Let's just take the lyric from the hook at face value:
"I know what them boys want... "
Do you Five Knives? I was just sitting underneath a pile of women's lifestyle magazines asking myself that age old question. What the fuck DO them boys want? L'est we ignore the improper possessive pronoun, abusing grammar for effect – which is common and in and of itself and perfectly excusable – but coming from the same band who sang (and i paraphrase) "I'll shoot 'em in the back if they touch my stash", it's the same weak-ass streetwise white bread cultural appropriation that white kids love mimic given i sincerely doubt anyone in this band has any drugs worth stealing, a gun with which to shoot someone, much less a potential murder charge in their future. But hey, did Johnny Cash actually shoot a man just to watch him die? Hell, no. Fuck it. I'll let you have that one for the sake of artistic license. You guys are gangsta as fuck. so let's get to the real shit here: what DO them boys want?

Like candy? Kisses? Pussy? Can I just follow your lead here, play it safe, and solve for x with "pleasure"? This is the mystery about which you've chosen to write a song? Who is this song for? 12 year olds? Who wouldn't know this besides middle schoolers? But as this video illustrates, these are adult themes. Really really dumb adult themes. And i don't mean dumb as in bad, i mean dumb as in the lack of smart.
And that is essentially the problem. It is so over the top in undermining the common denominator, this song somehow says less than the 4min and 14 seconds of nothing that preceded its creation. The only thing separating it from a parody of pop culture de-evolution is its intent. If this song was from a Mike Judge film, it would be hilarious.

The difference between this and the rather enjoyable Charli XCX album starts with the basics - multiple stanzas of lyrics. Hooks that are catchy because they were written well and not simply repetitive. Choice of electronic instrumentation that doesn't grate the ears. The songs are about themes that are basic and certainly not underdone in pop music, but at least they are themes. This is a song about a word. I don't expect all pop music to be "smart", but a halfway decent double entendre would be nice. This is sensationalism from the inside out. If you can't give me substance, at least give me style and not a barb-wired bathtub of bad taste.

Re: “12th and Porter to Close Feb. 28

Memories of one decent night there. Occasionally whoever was in charge would rally and a night would go as planned. The scenario described above was more common. There were rumors for years about the sound people, that it was pay to play and bunch of other stuff. But we stopped going for good when we showed up to an extremely important showcase for particular artist in town who's career was sabotaged over and over again. They were supposed to be on at 8, by 11 still nothing and a major label debut ruined. This whole treating people like crap to be hip thing is over, as well as dark unfriendly cave dwelling staffers be warned; we are not tolerating the crap any longer, to many places and to many options to take abuse as a form of amusement for board and bitter bar staff and management.
Ditto on the Basement as the best club in Nashville hands down, always get a hello and a smile.
Label people love to joke what a great business it would be without Artists, well the Artists wonder how great it would be without the bar alcohol agenda involved!

Re: “Five Knives Release Video for 'Sugar'; Blogger Barfs in Own Mouth [Fresh Vid]

Is no worse that what many "supposed" critics of the modern era keep supporting like Beyoncé, Katy Perry and Kelly Clarkson and many others who couldn't sing and just yell with autotune. It's a whole lot of people who can't sing in this modern ear and also who have no artistic abilities. It's not about them being female, it's about them being fake, and terrible. There's nothing wrong with being brave enough to state the truth. Amy Winehouse is a real and amazing artist! And there are others who should be brought up, and no kudos given to no talents, because that's a critics supposed job, or at least it was in the past. But honestly even though this band is completely derivative and a rip off directly of some 80's stuff, it's better than people who purport to sing and write songs when they are just all autotune, even live, and you end up being able to hear it. IJS And don't get me started on all the terrible autotune new male artists who pose as singer, but who don't get a free pass from critics, since critics are mostly male.

I think I know good rock from bad but I really can't tell with this EDM stuff. I know it doesn't appeal to me. It's not made for me. I couldn't make it past 1:30 before stopping the video.

everyone loves Charli XCX?

Re: “12th and Porter to Close Feb. 28

Coming from LA recently, 12th and porter was one of my first Nashville rock scene experiences. The sound guy was rude and scolded my girlfriend for setting a cup down on an old, beat up (and drink stained) monitor, so she could tie her shoe. The bartenders were complete dicks, and the sound was good onstage, but the crowd apparently thought the bass was too much and couldn't hear the vocals. So, all in all, not impressed. Not sad about this. Basement is way better.

Re: “Five Knives Release Video for 'Sugar'; Blogger Barfs in Own Mouth [Fresh Vid]

So you don't like the song - I get it. Sometimes, people like to dance to mindless stuff with a beat. Is that news? Is that worth wishing they were tied to a rock in the desert? Why is it cool if Katy Perry does it, but uncool if these guys do it? I like "Brass Monkey" a lot, and that's not exactly Shakespeare either. I posted a video above by Five Knives that has plenty of grit and attitude. The new song is a more commercial attempt, apparently. It's also one song. It doesn't mean every song they do sounds like that. I understand you guys write about music, and you employ humor. I just don't see the need in making it so personal, and trying to humiliate a local band who plays rock/pop and is trying to make it. And again, I've seen these guys, and it was a good show. Florida Georgia line also are rich stars, and they play country. Picking on someone with the bank accounts they have is a different matter in my book. I've been on both sides of the trash talking on this blog, and I'm taking a step back from it. It's old, not cool, and in my opinion, went too far in this case. Thanks for the forum.

Re: “Five Knives Release Video for 'Sugar'; Blogger Barfs in Own Mouth [Fresh Vid]

Nothing ventured nothing gained. 15mph down the highway to the danger zone.

I don't usually support bashing local bands, but this isn't just bad music, it's a ham-fisted broad stroke, and a long lunge forward in the direction of nowhere. It is aggressively and unapologetically trite. It's the aural equivalent of shooting a bear in a cage. Like stars you see in the sky that actually died thousands of years ago, it's bright and tangible with origins that ceased to be relevant within most our lifetimes. It's the recycled sentiment behind The Waitresses' "I know What Guys Like" and Bow Wow Wow's "I Want Candy" dragging for 30 years behind one last lash at the dead "My Milkshake Brings All the Boys to the Yard" horse, rewrapped it and cranked it at top volume so as to appear shiny, new, but ultimately familiar. Can this tired trope count on you for your support again this year? Are we to swallow this tissue of horse shit? Are we to take these glib lies like a greased and nameless asshole? Can't we just demand better of our more illuminated ambassadors?

This is the hackneyed shit adults retire into children's songs once they can no longer take it seriously. It's the same dim lightbulb that flashed over Florida Georgia Line's heads just before that fatal mistake of their first studio session. In the words of local poet Danny Pujol, it's "too safe now". And they knew this. And they didn't just record it, they filmed its visual counterpart and are now pedaling it without shame.

We wouldn't take this shit off Turbo Fruits either.

Re: “12th and Porter to Close Feb. 28

Good news. I booked my annual festival event there in May a few years ago for a show in November. Had posters and other publicity out there when they, last minute, pushed me to "the lounge" (people walking through for an unknown jam band that replaced us). Thank God for venues such as Douglas Corner Cafe.

Re: “Five Knives Release Video for 'Sugar'; Blogger Barfs in Own Mouth [Fresh Vid]

You know what Sean? You're just being a douche, man. You don't know the guys in Five Knives. They could be your fucking neighbors here in town, and I bet you wouldn't dawg them like that to their faces. It's one thing to rip on Ted Nugent or Kid Rock for being dicks (they are). Or rip on Steven Tyler for being a goofball. They're rich and famous! These are guys are up & coming, they're from here, you don't know them, and they're probably just trying to pay some freaking bills, you know? This blog has praised Katy Perry, and she's as commercial as it gets. Not to say I dislike her, but if commercial music's not your thing, well... I got in on some of the ripping on nu metal, and Falling in Reverse recently, as written by Megan. I even tried to deflect some of the animosity directed at her in response to her rip on FIR, onto me. Maybe this whole game of ripping things that SUCK is getting tired, old, and stupid. From now on, I'm just saying something I don't like ain't my thing, and that's it. Saying you want to tie someone to rock and leave them in the desert because you dislike their music? That's just ridiculous and dumb, and it's bad writing. This blog has been slipping pretty badly. I may not consider myself an expert, but I'd say I know music better than most. I thought Jeff the Brotherhood was best band at Lollapalooza when I saw them at Lollapalooza. I thought Diarrhea Planet was the best band at The Hangout Festival when I saw them at the Hangout Festival. I thought The War on Drugs put out the album of the year last year. I can be snarky too - but from now on, I'm saving my snark for those who really deserve it - asshole right wing politicians, and their cheerleaders in entertainment like Kid Rock, who killed a mountain lion on a hunting trip this month. Not cool! Makes him a real dick in my view! His music? That's just not my thing, but if it's yours, whatever. To each his own. You may not agree with me in general, or what I'm writing here specifically, but at least I've been a reader of this blog who's stuck with it, makes comments, and still gives a shit about it - but that's starting to change. And from the looks of things, and articles like this one, I don't think I'm the only one who's drifting from the notion that you guys still have important things to say. That said, I hope no one ties you to a rock and leaves you in desert anytime soon - although I wouldn't be surprised if that's what you wish on me as your reply. Ha, hysterical! Whatta burn, right?? No, not really. Give it a rest. Try getting back to writing stuff that matters. And be nicer to your neighbors. You might find out you like them if you get to know them.
