I'm very late to this discussion, but I have just watched her documentary on TV and I was absolutely stunned when she was convicted. I feel for all parties involved, but was deeply saddened to hear of no rehabilition process.
On a separate issue, the access to guns in the US is alarming. I don't for a second suggest that anyone with bad intentions couldn't get a hold of a gun if they had bad intentions - I don't think either either the victim or Cyntoia did (except of course, that he was planning to pay a child for sex) - but it makes you think that already vulnerable people like Cyntoia have no understanding of the impact of guns because everyone can own one.
I hope that Cyntoia receives the support she needs. As a teacher, I am pleased to hear she is accessing an education, and wish her the best as she becomes a young woman. As a person only 2 years older than her who has known an entirely different life, I will think of her.

I thought it was a blah song by a singer with a blah voice. Singer-songwriters are generally heralded even when the songs are less than spectacular and the singing leaves a lot o be desired. Sometimes songwriters should just write, sometimes singers should just sing.

Well, that clearly would NEVER happen at a club in NYC, LA or Chicago, eh?
Not to mention, it's much easier to paint an entire city's worth all on the basis of ONE person's performance, eh?

I attempted to attend one open "comedy" mike at , not at Zanies, a club I boycott across the board on principle based on its general policies, both on how they treat customers and performers.
After making people wait an entire hour after the supposed start time in putrid smoke and no AC, a "host", presumably an "established, more "advanced" comedian in Nashville started a "routine". He didn't get through the first few seconds without saying the f bomb or some variation on it nearly every other word. It was so NOT funny, so banal and stupid. Working ones way "up" in a Nashville "comedy" club would be questionably worth it, you'd learn zero. You go to LA, Chi Town or NYC and get it done. We do not have anything resembling a developing "comedy scene" or any burgeoning "talent". Just keep patting yourselves on the back and hold on to that day job.

I can't speak to the calendar listings, but, in the wake of this cover story reaching people who may not have known that Nashville has any comedy to speak of, I figured that a supplemental blog post outlining open mics, regular shows and touring comedian highlights would be useful.

Mostly a hit piece but an interesting read. Unfortunately, we're still missing the whole story. The following was not addressed: 1) I have read that Martin uses the same wood from the same supplier, is this true or false? The article generalizes and says "other manufacturers probably got their wood legally". Well? did they or didn't they? 2) the story I've read isn't about a trade groups political contributions to the respective parties but the contributions of the Gibson company itself and more specifically, it's CEO. This was not addressed. Again, an interesting piece but I have to wonder to it's accuracy due to it's unabashed bias against all things conservative and Gibson in general. Also, looks like Madagascar has some serious issues.

Hey, why is there a list of standup comedy shows on Country Life? Isn't that what the Scene's Calendar is for? Why don't the Scene's editors update that section more often?

At one point in my life I drove a taxi in Nashville. When I had visitors in the cab and we passed Wave Country in the off season they would frequently ask what the sign was about. Since all they could see were chain link fences, a few buildings and the sign, I would tell them that Wave Country was a group effort by the Nashville's psychiatric community and that patients with self esteem issues were brought there to wave at cars passing by. Local drivers - most everybody - who knew of the program would give a friendly wave back, thus contributing to the patient's self esteem. It took a couple of years but I finally got a travel writer from NY City to say, "Really?"

Because too often a comedian would come to Nashville & talk to us like we were a bunch of yokels. Too many hillbilly jokes, too many "he has no teeth" jokes, etc.
There's a great line of successful & terrific comedians from the South: Brother Dave Gardner, Jerry Clower, Jeff Foxworthy, etc. None became successful by being mean or disrespectful to their audiences in the South, they became successful by getting audiences to laugh along with them.

How come NO mention of the improv scene in Nashville? Improv Nashville then Music City Improv has been performing for years in East Nashville (and previously 12th South). Great shows.
