I see others question the financials of this program. I am neither here nor there as to if they should be allowed to sell papers. I do question some of the business practices of the group as a whole. The Contributor says they distribute 100,000 papers monthly at a minimum. That is $6,937.50 worth of sales tax revenue for the state. Mostly for the city since a majority of the papers are sold in Davidson County. Next is $75,000 worth of income, (100,000-$25,000 for the papers) since every vendor is a independent contractor. My W-2 showes wages of $79,789.21, and total taxes of $14,528.42 so let us use that for comparison. Each month is $14,500 in taxes toward the federal government. Now back to state government...state unemployment tax. It is capped on first $9000 of wages per person. So $900,000 worth of wages in a year (75000*12) devided by 400 vendors(Contributor provided number) is $2,250 in wages per vendor on average. $2,250 times unemployment rate of 2.7% is $60.75 per vendor. 400 times $60.75 is $24,300 in unemployment tax. Everyone that makes a wage pays this, regardless of income or standing. So to wrap up $174,000 in federal taxes/year , $83,250 in sales tax/year and $24,300 in state unemployment taxes/year. I would like to see where these taxes are collected since I am sure that some of the vendors collect benefits from the governments that collect these taxes so they can pay these benefits. A: The Contributor has a minimum monthly circulation of 100,000 copies and is the highest-circulating street newspaper of its kind in North America. Just think of the tax figures when they have a good month and now two different editions monthly.

the sheer audacity of this pig Perry March to continue to torment this family ...every time the story comes up on television it makes me interested to know how the children and grandparents of that lovely young woman are faring -but it also makes me want to fetch that murderous pig 'upside the haid' with something solid and painful. Grrr. Hopefully enough time has now elapsed and the children have reached their majority so they no longer have to be concerned about this sociopath interfering in their lives.
What frosts me the most is the virulent anti-semitism expressed by his father when he was caught - and their complete hatred for the Levines without whom March HAD no life. Janet was his ticket to success and the good life, otherwise he was simply a small-time con man who stole from even more people in Mexico, yet they had the sheer audacity to insult and demean these good people and even plot to murder them even after destroying their lives by murdering their beloved daughter? Pah!

I remember Joey Bowker growing up in my hometown of East Palestine, Ohio. He was a pretty big-time promotor at the age of 17. He had a pretty big time band come to our high school gymnasium and they couldn't figure out how or why they were there. He had a real flare for big time stuff. Wow, All the "cool" kids grew up and, no.... wait. They didn't occupy the public square. They got jobs, and have lives. The excuse to go camping on the public square is, just that, an excuse. An excuse to "peacefully" squat on the public square, and vainly attempt to recreate a movement that died four decades ago. Long before most in the croud of squatters were even born, but the romantic allure of burns so brightly in their egotistical need for attention they otherwise would never be deserving of. Peace be to those who wish to express their own versions of innanity, but at some point, the days of camping need to subside, the unwashed need to get washed, and simply find a way to make their lives meaningful without being a spectacle.

Our local Gov well knows how we all are getting squezed and ript off, and Nashvilliians are just totally totally FED up! On a BAD economic situation they have allowed local utilitiy companies to raise rates, taxes etc, take for instance Metro Water Services, take a good look at you bill and you'll find out that for every gallon of residential consumption they charge more than twice for every gallon of water that goes into the sewage system... when not all water we consumpt goes into the sewer! Rod Serling (Twilight Zone) once said that when a government policies no longer work, then that government is obsolete and therefore must be changed! Wouldn't be surprised that the invisible corruption that no one notices, is making overnite millionaires by cutting sweetheart real estate developing deals... even our Lotery system is ripping off all of us, what ever happened when the lotery was a real game of chance, when a kid's hands would pick up the winning numbers? now all of that is controlled by software! there used to be 2 new millionaires each week when there was 49 numbers to pick, now the numbers keep increasing and the "power" balls too! and of course the jackpots keep on rolling over... but the Lotery officials paid themselves exagerated salaries and raises! Man! we are FED UP! and the world keeps on trying to blow our minds.

Anyone who knows Bill Gibbons knew that putting him in charge of the Department of Safety was a big mistake. First, he is not, nor has he ever been, a law enforcement officer. Second, although he does have a law degree, he has no experience in criminal law. He was appointed D.A. in 1996 with no criminal law experience, either as a prosecutor or a defense attorney. When he left the D.A.'s job in 2011, he left with no criminal law experience. In fifteen years as D.A., he never once stepped into a courtroom to prosecute at trial or a hearing, negotiate a settlement, or announce a guilty plea. Third, he is a narrow, shallow man with almost no interest in anything larger than his own ego. Fourth, he has little regard for people he perceives as having no power to help him or hurt him. Fifth, he craves the approval of men who are richer and/or more powerful than he. It was entirely predictable that he would misuse the Highway Patrol in an effort to maintain favor with his master, Bill Haslam.

To ride a bicycle without wearing a helmet is an exercise in folly and ignorance. That being said, its not the government's place to try to save us from ourselves in the form of nanny state laws. The ends do not justify the means. Unfortunately poor "Sky" here will serve for many as an example of why one SHOULD wear a helmet, not why one MUST wear a helmet.

Helmets should be mandatory for everyone. I've had at least one accident where my head hit the ground, I cracked my helmet having to get a new one and I'm still alive to tell about it.

In cultures/cities where cycling is very very prevalent, there is very very little helmet use. Visit Amsterdam, Cologne, Paris, etc. and tell me how many people you see wearing helmets. It will be under 10%. Yes, they have a culture more respectful of cyclists and more accommodations for them, but the context of this story could have been transferred anywhere else. It's truly an unfortunate accident.
