Re: “Ancient Tennesseans' Trash Current Tennesseans' Treasure

Perhaps an interview with Mr. Deter-Wolf that aired in December 2011 (http://www.americanvarietyradio.net/PAST_S…) will help jar some recall of mastodons in Tennessee.

The Coats-Hines Site, one of the few sites in eastern North America where archaeologists have found proof of early peoples hunting mastodons, is located near U.S. 31, which is part of the web of prehistoric trails connecting thoroughly documented settlement areas across Tennessee. Here's one of Mr. Deter-Wolf's academic papers on the site: http://csfa.tamu.edu/cfsa-publications/Tun… . The buffalo and such were trotting back and forth between French Lick (aka Nashville) and the Harpeth River, following trails the mastodons and other prehistoric wildlife had mapped for them.

Miss Betsy was being kind in not rehashing the whole history — or prehistory — of Middle Tennessee in her reference to the mastodon paths. I'm sure she can offer up reference works nearly equivalent to our state archaeologists' if you ask her ... and give her a couple of days to sort through her filing cabinets.

Re: “As the school district readies itself for a new superintendent, a new report spots organizational knots to untangle

Metro schools cannot compete with charter schools because if a student does do what they are supposed to or perform at a high enough lever at a charter school, they send them back to their zoned Metro school. Typically right before state testing so that the kid's test scores are credited to the Metro school. Same goes for the Magnet schools. On the other hand, Metro schools has like 1 central office staff for every 5 teachers. The only way to justify having over 600 central office employees is to have them constantly be coming up with new initiatives sent down as directives. Often the directives contradict other initiatives that Metro is demanding be done. And yes, metro adopted a grade scale with a minimum score of 50. But they did that so they could meet the graduation requirements of No Child Left Behind...yet another directive that was sent down without consulting anyone at an actual school. So that does help a lot with the graduation rate. Don't agree with it, but it sure has been effective at making sure everyone passes every class.

Elco, you are not allowed to joke in this "forum"; the resident thought police, who are overwhelmingly leftist and obtuse, cannot grasp it.

I am contemplating a return to the Colombian coffee plantation, by the way, but will be armed this time.

Re: “Lonnell Matthews is already being sized up for higher office — but first he has to win his at-large race

So as I read this, my thought is... "It doesn't matter if you're a great candidate, or not, if you can't garner name-recognition." Also, "If you have great name recognition, it doesn't matter if you're a great candidate, or not."

This is really a sad indictment on voters, who should be ashamed of themselves that this is the way it is.

I will not vote for someone that I know nothing about; an endorsement means nothing to me if I can't identify anything about a candidate. An endorsement may or may not open up a candidate to my consideration, but ultimately, it comes down to who the candidate is and not who else he / she has convinced makes them a good candidate.

Re: “Attention WKRN — Being Trans is Not a Crime

Thank you for making these excellent points, Miss Betsy. Honestly, I thought the law said that the proposed act and the request for compensation had to actually be verbalized before someone could be charged with prostitution. (I may be wrong; it's been a while since I had to look up that particular entry in the Tennessee Code Annotated.) Stopping into a motel office and renting a room for the day with cash is not prostitution, however. Sounds to me that it could just as easily be a tired traveler.

Sadly, though, in Murfreesboro, not only is being a transgender person interpreted as a crime, but Existing While Black also still seems to get you a lot of unwarranted — in all senses of the term — police attention. This person already had two strikes walking in the door of a pretty rough place.

As to WKRN's coverage, they and the other local broadcast media seem to have begun poring over police reports, particularly in the counties outside Nashville, and cherry-picking whatever's going to get them more clicks. I don't know if they have a weekly story quota there, but I have been told that other stations have implemented such.

John complaining about a lack of class is like a penguin complaining about flight restrictions.

Will all the other Council candidates get such a boost? So far only two districts have had articles about their races--twice. Other districts; do they matter to the Scene or is it just trendy neighborhoods and candidates?

Re: “Attention WKRN — Being Trans is Not a Crime

The Scene does a great job of reporting local news and critiquing other news outlets, but on this one you all are way off. The headline is at best misleading. This is the story of a criminal perpetrating a criminal act that jeopardizes the safety of other motel occupants. This is a legit news story that serves as a deterrent to future criminality.

Re: “Attention WKRN — Being Trans is Not a Crime

I suspect that a good lawyer will be able to get thrown out of court. Paying with cash is not illegal, and looking "weird" is not a rational basis for probable cause. I wonder if they got warrant to search his room and his phone.

Re: “Attention WKRN — Being Trans is Not a Crime

That is exactly why female woman has become a useful phrase.

I think we will be seeing more of "gender fluidity" BTW. Perhaps B Phillips will address that one.

We also need to take a look at "micro-aggression; a new one probably for some of you folks.
