Re: “Obama Haters Waste No Time Opposing Haslam's Medicaid Plan

When you say "the feds get their money from us," that's not exactly true for recipient states like Tennessee, which receives more in federal money than we pay into federal coffers.

And, while Medicaid does not give the kinds of profit margins that private health insurance might, it does cover the costs of care. Often, these were patients that had to pay cash to see doctors--many doctors would discount their services for them (I've told the story often of my now-ex husband who was unable to buy health insurance at any price in Tennessee due to a pre-existing condition--our family doctor would treat him for half the cost of what an office visit was charged at. With Medicaid expansion, the entire cost of the office visit would be covered).

Also, Medicaid under the expansion does cover specialists--mental health and ob/gyn coverage are required by law.

Finally, as long as we continue to insist on this silly, inefficient third-party health insurance coverage system, getting more people covered is absolutely something to celebrate, both by those who will now be able to be covered, and by those of us whose high insurance premiums have been subsidizing them.

We need to scrap Medicaid, VA Health care and other federal plans and place ALL citizens on an expanded version of Medicare.

Having an insurance card should be as easy to get and cheaper than a Game Stop card.

Re: “Barbic on the ASD: "We Plan to Grow Our Presence Here"

It would be fantastic if ASD were more pro-active, partnering with schools at risk of becoming priority schools, and preventing that from happening.

Otherwise, they give off the whiff of being opportunists and second-hand profiteers.

Re: “Obama Haters Waste No Time Opposing Haslam's Medicaid Plan

We're also not "turning down" loads of federal money--the feds get their money from us to start with, and don't come close to paying the actual cost of all these new people on welfare.

For starters, even 100% of Medicaid's reimbursement rate doesn't cover the actual cost of care. Doctors lose considerable money on Medicaid patients, and have to make it up by charging everyone else more.

On top of that, the fed's supposed Medicaid expansion funding doesn't cover specialists, and other things.

The widespread availability of Medicaid means the people on it can work for lower wages, lowering the prevailing wage. That creates a poverty vacuum that sucks down wages and opportunity.

Medicaid is a welfare program. Getting more people on welfare isn't something to celebrate.

"You know how many people yell I can't breath solely in an effort to escape police custody?"

Well, in this case it was true, and the results were fatal. perhaps that matters little to you, but in the rest of the nation, lives matter! Or at least they should.

My credible opinion is based on my military hand combat experience, hence I do not need my name on a badge, what's your experience. Having been trained admittedly many years ago, I do know a leg sweep on a larger person is advantageous if done properly, especially when others are there to "help" the target down.
A choke hold is never the better option unless your intention is to harm. That is why it is discouraged nationwide by police forces. It is dangerous and usually unnecessary. It appears you may have watched too much WWE.
These pages are for opinions, even one as bad as yours. I do NOT need your permission to offer such. Disagree, even condemn me, but do NOT attempt to silence me, you haven't the ability.

How many?

Here's a question: does someone selling loose cigarettes pose a public threat? Is it emergent for him to be taken into custody immediately?

You know how many people yell I can't breath solely in an effort to escape police custody? And you'd have to be an idiot to try and "leg sweep" someone that size. No where in the use of force continum is leg sweep. How about simply soing what the police tell you too and if theiy're wrong, you'll have your time in court. When you get your badge and your J. COLLINS name tag that said you've been serving longer than last week, then you can give a credible opinion

Re: “Metro Police: Officer Shot, Teenage Gunman Killed After Sunday Night Shootout

"Bam Jim Collins, you just proved my point."

NO, I didn't. The fact they are highly trained simply illustrates that they should have knowledge of other take-down measures, less lethal alternatives. In this Nashville case, they attempted to utilize such, when it failed and when presented with a weapon being fired they used their only alternative. They should be praised.
In Staten Island, given the circumstances, they could (should) have simply issued a summons IF their purpose was to prevent Garner from selling "loosies". They could (should) have utilized a leg sweep when they physically engaged Garner, instead of a badly applied Carotid Restraint resulting in a choke hold. Upon his wheezing out "I can't breathe", they should have immediately removed themselves from laying/sitting on him and rolled him on his back, releasing pressure from his chest. The man clearly could not breathe, was in distress, and should have been administered assistance. Instead, they ignored training and he died.
As for Brown, the process was so prostituted by the police and prosecutor, we might NEVER truly know what happened. Going on identified eyewitnesses, the majority of them state Brown was a safe distance from an armed officer, already wounded, and was surrendering when he was gunned down mercilessly. The conflicting testimonies could (should) have been sorted out in a public trial, but it was perverted by clumsily utilized non traditional Grand Jury process hijacked by the power structure in Ferguson to placate the police and local politicians.

You seem to be overlooking the influence & power that HCA and CHS have over Haslem AND legislators. If you think they're sitting idly by while tea party nuts force Tenneessee to pass up millions in healthcare dollars, you're being naive. Wayne Smith & Tommy Frist have Haslem on speed dial.

Re: “Metro Police: Officer Shot, Teenage Gunman Killed After Sunday Night Shootout

Bam Jim Collins, you just proved my point. "The police are highly trained", yet the rest of society which has no law enforcement training and minimal understanding of the law in most cases thinks that they're qualified to critique a situation. They are not. Nothing in any of these cases, similar or not, points to any actions being made based on race. All that has been promoted by the court of public opinion. Show me any fact that contradicts that specifically in any of these cases.

Your right as well, halfwyay, the police could not use deadly force until they believed their life or someone elses was in imminate danger. That doesn't necessarly mean that a deadly weapon must be pointed at you and for some reason again people choose to ignore the fact that many people have been hilled without a weapon. The situations are almost ironic. Brown supporters don't think deadly force was justified because he was unarmed and don't feel the officers accounting demonstrated he was in fear, yet, in the other scenario they want to crucify an unarmed police officer half the size of the suspect for killing him without a weapon.

Both cases had close scrutinity as they were taken before the grand jury and in both cases a jury of the community decided that the officer was justified or had no criminal wrong doing. In both scenarios the legal process was followed, actually it was exceeded as neither DA was required to present to the grand jury, they did to scrutinize and answer to the community. Apparently that's no longer any good.

In this situation, as in thousands of others, officers weapons should have been drawn and at low ready or on target and without hesistaion they should have been able to fire as soon as the threat was imminent, not after the fact. This officer is very, very lucky he didn't loose his life over this punk ass, worthless kid. "I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6"

Cool it with the anti gay stuff.

But that scenario does represent of complete hypocritical POV. Healthcare is vital to longevity and quality of life, something in the most privileged and wealthy country in the world should be a given. That such has become more of a profitable product that a public service is reprehensible and counter to the stated mission of ALL major religions!

Re: “Metro Police: Officer Shot, Teenage Gunman Killed After Sunday Night Shootout

You can appreciate and "not hate" police officers and still demand a high level of accountability of them. Well, maybe not you, but most of the rest of us can. To classify us as cop haters is immature and illogical. Police are highly trained and are required via condition of employment and commission to set aside prejudices and hatreds in the conduct of their duties. Are they under extreme stress at times, YES, that is the definition of their job. To kill an unarmed man calls for close scrutiny and answering to the community. At Ferguson and Staten Island, that failed.
This situation had NO connection to either other controversies. The police attempted to take the boy into custody, it failed, he drew a weapon and fired, they returned fire. A righteous use of force on the part of the officers. It could NOT be averted. Until the boy drew the weapon, the police had NO reason to use deadly force and they didn't. Kudo's to them. Hope the shot officer will be OK, though I fear on TV that is unlikely. Sad!

yoyojohn: you are being obnoxious, condescending, and a complete ass hole, as usual. Why am I not surprised?
