Re: “Kid Rock is a Real Person with a Real, Dead Friend

I don't think the conversation necessarily reflects poorly on any of the three participants, either.

Afriend is dead, apparently with a gruesome head injury.

Person #1 curses up a storm and can't carry on a conversation; Person #2 won't look at the scene or provide assistance (not that it would have mattered); the third person is, presumably, going by the book on how to take a 911 call.

I give the first two people passes because of the circumstances. I'll let the chain-of-command deal with the third, although I presume she did what she was trained to do.

Re: “Sometimes Bill Haslam Explains Himself, Sometimes He Doesn't

For the life of me, that photo of Haslam looks like he is waiting for momma bird to drop a worm in his mouth. Fortunately our legislature always has a fresh worm, straight from the mud, to oblige.

Re: “I Can't Even Be Mad at Bill Haslam

Is there any instance in Tennessee of a counselor or therapist being disciplined for refusing to counsel an LGBT client? Or is this another "solution" in search of a problem?

Re: “Sometimes Bill Haslam Explains Himself, Sometimes He Doesn't

Reminds me of former Vanderbilt Football coach Bobby Johnson. When asked if there were any concrete plans for stadium improvements, Bobby replied to the reporter, "Yes, we plan on using concrete." At least Bobby was a good person though. Unlike any member of the Haslam family.

Re: “Kid Rock is a Real Person with a Real, Dead Friend

I agree 100% Betsy; the one thing I would NEVER sacrifice for ANYTHING is my RIGHT to privacy! I think maybe Robert should come home where he LIVES a "genuine" life, MI will ALWAYS love & respect it's homeboy! So sorry for his devasting loss and for the lack of respect and compassion for the victim and our Kid~come home where the forementioned is a "natural"! For his assistant and the family I will keep you in my prayers. R.I.P. dear friend.

Re: “The tally of low-performing Metro schools stands to grow. How does the city get them off the state's list of the bottom 5 percent?

MNPS inability to move schools off the priority list over the last several years is an indictment of the failed leadership of Alan Coverstone, who was tasked by Dr Register to oversee and turn around priority schools. It is also an indictment of the bogus charter-style "school reform" philosophy to which Coverstone was devoted.

Re: “After two violent incidents in the Cayce Homes, is increased law enforcement part of the solution — or part of the problem?

I'm confused by the boasting of city officials that if and when Cayce is redeveloped, no one currently living there will be displaced. Judging by the numerous violent acts reported at Cayce on a constant basis, some of these people definitely need to be displaced. And I don't buy the argument that it's always outsiders causing the problem.

Re: “After two violent incidents in the Cayce Homes, is increased law enforcement part of the solution — or part of the problem?

This article is heavily slanted in typical media fashion attempting to stir up deeper troubles. Shame on you. Giving credit to ridiculous quotes such as the "police need to do their job right." What?? Are you kidding me? Do you have a clue what they deal with day in and day out in those areas? I know firsthand that the majority of the officers try to treat people with respect and dignity and would prefer they chose a better life for themselves. These young kids who say they're being harassed . . . .did you ask them about the positive interractions? Did they offer up the advice they've been offered by officers who want to make a change. No, because they don't get "respect" by living by the law. Why don't you send your writers back into the area for the rest of the story? I'm so tired of these stories by writers looking for the "sensational" responses. Give us honesty from all sides instead for a change.

And the Pinkston/Frogge/Speering plan to improve these schools is?... more recess?... more bickering over charter schools?...

Re: “I Can't Even Be Mad at Bill Haslam

Racial discrimination is beyond the reasoning this nation is currently based on, present congress excluded. The danger of conservatism based on political and social ignorance, is that it excuses bigotry and prejudice as long as you can find a loose and not entirely cogent excuse for it. Properly illustrated by Donna's opposition to the 60's lunch counter boycott.

If one is a Christian, it seems to me that they would endeavor to help someone regardless. That is the message of the Christ, is it not? If one becomes a counselor, it seems to me the would endeavor to help people regardless. That is the pupose of the profession, is it not? It seems to me that the two are totally compatible.

The line reasoning here is that both lunch counters and counselors are licensed by the government. Hence they exist to serve the public, all the public, and exist at the pleasure of the public. Both through basic laws of business and license.

What the state just did was grant business permission to discriminate legally. Just what will the natural extension here be?

In Donna's world, racial discrimination is both moral and legal, or should be. THAT is despicable, immoral, and completely lacking in character. And the GOP says racial discrimination is dead. Perhaps not in the small narrow POV of social neanderthals.

Re: “Will the Red Grooms-designed Tennessee Fox Trot Carousel — once the toast of Lower Broad, now sitting in storage — ever again see the light of day?

The Republicans have no problem with trying to shove their religious beliefs and guns down everyone's throats but when it comes to doing something good they don't have the time, money or inclination to do anything for the community or the people.

Typical politicians

Do we get applesauce tonight or pudding?

I made a birdhouse out of popsicle sticks last week in arts & crafts for seniors.

I think it's time to hose me down.

Re: “I Can't Even Be Mad at Bill Haslam

I have a right to discriminate against you based on your sexual preference.

No one should be able to infringe upon my right to discriminate you.

If I can't discriminate against you - you are the bigot in this scenario.

I will not tolerable your intolerance of my God given right to discriminate.

Words can mean anything to a hypocrite.

So chew on that for a while.

I, and the governor make the codifocation of discrimination sound so reasonable, don't we?

No, not really. I'm sure you like to believe that about yourself, though.

Re: “I Can't Even Be Mad at Bill Haslam

Fred, I believe I have made my position clear on individual freedom, on government interference, and distinction between public and private. I am not a Libertarian, but some people think I am because of positions I take. I'm just an independent thinker. As always, I think one's rights end where another's begin.

Although the government order came down years before, the public schools in my county did not racially integrate until 1965. I was a teenager just starting high school. I remember that time very well. Very smooth transition at my school. Smoother than today. One of my young relatives was glad to get out of that school four years ago because of changes over time and his fear for his safety. But back in 1965 here, critical mass was happening because of a combination of factors. Still, some private business owners closed up shop rather than serve black people. The two or three privately owned swimming pools open to the public here closed and never returned. Local government then got into the swimming pool business. A lot more I could say, but I need to get some work done.
