Re: “Stephen Fincher Loves Government Handouts, Just Not for the Poor

You know who loved that particular piece of the Bible? Lenin. Dude couldn't stop quoting it. He used it in "State and The Revolution." Hell, it's in the Soviet Constitution. You can look it up, right there in Article XII.

"In the USSR work is a duty and a matter of honor for every able-bodied citizen, in accordance with the principle: 'He who does not work, neither shall he eat.'"

Re: “On TV News, Sweeps and Sensationalism

How about the most Laughable sweeps story of all: Nick ___ on Channel 5 some years back with his planted cameras at Panama City Beach for "Spring Break." What a silly hoot that one turned out to be. Similar to the Capone Vault fiasco.
I must say Channel 4 has improved their stories over the last couple of yrs to more important items. Those by the Amos gal were the worst.

A gratuitous assertion, Frau Greta. Did the Fuehrer tell you that?

Re: “On TV News, Sweeps and Sensationalism

If you really want somebody to know something, you could just tell them.

I hate when they tell me that there's something really damned important that I cannot LIVE without knowing, but they're not going to show it to me until 10. Bull.

Re: “Whose Faith & Values Is The Tennessean Covering?

The story on "the Lutheran," ELCA Presiding Bishop Mark Hanson, was from January. I was disappointed; I thought they'd done a story on Pr. Nadia Bolz-Weber. She's awesome. I think Betsy would like her.

Last week was pretty big for mainline Christianity, as the Festival of Homiletics was here.

Bill, I agree. But you're messing with Betsy's MO.

Re: “Whose Faith & Values Is The Tennessean Covering?

[I didn't realize Betsy was a paid staffer at the Tennessean.]

Honestly though, isn't the raison d'être of the "alternative" press to cover the unreported or underreported stories out there? Betsy takes the Tennessean to task over the pagan festival, wouldn't this article have been way more constructive and/or interesting had she decided to do an article on the festival itself? She could have had all the festive pagans visiting pith to see what was reported about the festival...

I mean why do the pagans need a "unity" festival? What are the dividing issues among pagans?

Re: “Hey, Gov. Haslam — CEOs are Accountable to Shareholders, Right?

To place the blame on the poor is idiocy of the highest degree. 1st loan originators over sold loans to purchasers based on inflated values of those homes. many found them selves to be "upside down" on their homes resulting in foreclosures, which in turn exacerbated the already crashing market. Lack of adequate government regulation allowed these loan originators to run their game and dump those loans.
But that is not the only reason for the recession now is it? the repeal of Glass-Steagal separating banking and investing, Fannie Mae and Fannie Mac tried to inflate property values lowering standards on loans, even after the SEC being warned about what was to happen, they ignored the warning. AIG manipulated credit default swaps, shorting the sub prime mortgage market. All this happened in 2007 or about!
Yeah the poor and Obama conspired to create this mess.......NOT!

xray/zoombah/gasttheinert/vladthetotallypassedby: I think you missed the entire point of David's post!

As far as your defense of Mormon's, perhaps you are still in hopes of a Mittens victory, eh? Got NO problem with them as long as they are tolerant of other beliefs.

I fail to see where you have learned a lot from anyone!

Re: “Dean Proposes $1.8 Billion Metro Budget, Minus Subsidies for Auditorium, Farmers Market and Fairgrounds

>>affordable events like Rollergirls<<

I wonder what their average attendance is?

There's nothing the Auditorium can do that can't be better done at A) the "old" convention center; B) War Memorial; C) the Fairgrounds (I know this flies in the face of asshole Mayor Dean wanting to shut it down).

All of these places are much better maintained, have better facilities & could quite probably be negotiated to be pretty close to costing what events now cost @ Municipal. The property is worth more to Metro than what the Municipal brings in for revenue, I bet. I would also like to see what the figures are on the cost of running it for one year versus revenue. Anyone have a link to that info?

Re: “Hey, Gov. Haslam — CEOs are Accountable to Shareholders, Right?

>>Please go away<<

Yeah, if I couldn't disprove anything & people called on me to prove wild outlandish claims & I couldn't do it, I'd tell them to "go away" too. However, I don't make outlandish claims, I usually manage to prove them when asked to do so & I'm not going anywhere.

Re: “Dean Proposes $1.8 Billion Metro Budget, Minus Subsidies for Auditorium, Farmers Market and Fairgrounds

Municipal Auditorium is used for more affordable events like Rollergirls. It is also used for corporate events and tech rehearsals. These non-public events make it seem to be not busy when indeed it is.
