Re: “Lonnell Matthews is already being sized up for higher office — but first he has to win his at-large race

It sounds to me like he mostly pursues and appeals to other blacks. Jerry Maynard who is also black also supports him for being black and was talking about taking out ads and promoting Lonnell Matthews in black owned and run media like black radio stations. Matthews works with black kids. He might appeal to black voters. Maynard's story about getting white voters who didn't have a clue of who he was or what he stood for was downright creepy. People who vote for people they know nothing about shouldn't even be allowed to vote. Somehow I don't see most whites in a very conservative city voting for the former manager of a rapper (and other rappers) who sported a gold tooth up front and had a brother who got shot in a drug deal gone wrong as mayor. I certainly won't. My hometown of Atlanta was a wonderful place to grow up and live- until it became majority black and got a black mayor. A few years later it was named murder capital of the world and is now crime ridden. The same happened to New Orleans where some of my family is from. Perhaps he could run in one of those cities.

Re: “Lonnell Matthews is already being sized up for higher office — but first he has to win his at-large race

"Back then, Matthews was managing a local rapper and had a shiny decorative cap on a tooth he cracked while roughhousing with his brother as a child. That guy's friends knew him as Lo."
Even if it doesn't look like a duck any more it's still a duck. This baby Shaprton will never be Nashville's Mayor.

Re: “Lonnell Matthews is already being sized up for higher office — but first he has to win his at-large race

I had a couple of meetings with Councilman Matthews a few years back and found him to be a gentleman and dedicated to the YMCA's Community Action Project. His being "thrown into the pool" by May Town was probably his most valuable experience as a politician. Once he learned how to swim with the sharks, his intelligence and life experience prevailed. He handled the situation and ultimately did the right thing for Nashville. He will make a great Councilman-At-Large and should be considered a quality candidate for Mayor.

Re: “Lonnell Matthews is already being sized up for higher office — but first he has to win his at-large race

So as I read this, my thought is... "It doesn't matter if you're a great candidate, or not, if you can't garner name-recognition." Also, "If you have great name recognition, it doesn't matter if you're a great candidate, or not."

This is really a sad indictment on voters, who should be ashamed of themselves that this is the way it is.

I will not vote for someone that I know nothing about; an endorsement means nothing to me if I can't identify anything about a candidate. An endorsement may or may not open up a candidate to my consideration, but ultimately, it comes down to who the candidate is and not who else he / she has convinced makes them a good candidate.

Will all the other Council candidates get such a boost? So far only two districts have had articles about their races--twice. Other districts; do they matter to the Scene or is it just trendy neighborhoods and candidates?

I live on the polar opposite of his District but I'm able to ask him questions and get great info about Nashville initiatives in my own neighborhood.

Definitely voting for Matthews At Large!

Awesome article, Matthews resonates with the young professional community of Nashville. As the baby boomers pass the torch of leadership, I believe he will set a standard of change and growth for the Nashville community. Kudos!

I've had a chance to meet Mr. Matthews in person at several events and he seems to be very sincere about what he stands for and all people of Davidson County. I have encouraged people who supported my campaign for Sheriff to support him based on his record in office and what he stands for.

Re: “A grieving son finds no justice on Rev. Maury Davis' path to redemption

According to the Bible that Maury Davis believes to be the Word of God (which it is), he should be executed for committing murder.
Genesis 9:6,“Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed, for God made man in his own image."
A religious conversion--no matter how genuine--is not a get out of jail card. There are consequences for sin. People too often misunderstand forgiveness with the removal of consequences. Many good things he may have done, but executed he should be.

Re: “Did a shift in medication help cause Daniel Cantrell to kill his father?

Some of you have read without comprehension. Dr. Murphy had terminated his practice! He had moved on to another position (a promotion). He was no longer responsible for the care of Daniel. It's like saying if you left your job for a new one and some new problem developed at the old job- it's still your fault.

The institution had now assigned Daniel to a nurse practitioner who was "supervised" by Dr. Jack. That team was responsible for Daniel's care.

I agree with all that the Nurse Practitioner had no business independently caring for a psychotic patient without the direct supervision of a psychiatrist. Often Nurse practitioners think they know as much as doctors even though they have much, much less training.

The responsibility here was HCA's, the nurse practitioner and Dr Jack's. The nurse should have reported the situation to Dr. Jack - not at all clear that she did. But that is the problem when nurses act as doctors and the actual doctors are no where around. In these situations that are over their level of training, many nurses do not know enough to call the MD for help. That's why the should practice under direct supervision whereby the more highly trained doctor is there observing and discussing the patient's care with the nurse.

However, the public as pushed for nurses to function as doctors so we will be seeing more and more of this type of thing. The nurses like it because they get the recognition without having done all the training. The hospitals like it because its a bit (and only a bit) cheaper. But the patients lose out when the nurses handle situations above their training level.

Re: “For a teen’s impulsive, unthinkable act, Cyntoia Brown got an adult’s life sentence. Was justice served?

It's sad honestly really feel the girl deserves a second chance but unfortunately the justice system just like anything else is about money and a certain form of exposure that's what gets the mis guided and nieve out of things other than that it's basically up to who's ever strongly opinionated in the court room other than the public defender like the judge and prosecutor there absolute opinion and relationship on this matter is what counts they won't jeopardize there launch or relationship over years for no one that doesn't sign there pay check sorry if some my spelling is incorrect I'm 18 and half sleep but it's just what I've seen from being on the other side of the fence

Re: “Isaac Franklin's money had a major influence on modern-day Nashville — despite the blood on it

I liked this. Betsy, you're a good writer. You don't need to moralize at the end. Those of us who weigh things in our hearts as we learn them would have reached the right conclusion: so much of what we have now, we owe to abuse and suffering of others. While that might not make us morally culpable for specific deeds of our forbears, it does make us morally accountable for our failure to rectify what we can in our own time. Those who don't weigh things in their hearts as they learn them would reject this premise outright. So, questions like "what does this say about us" are wasted on both groups.

Totally agree with oh brother above. Never heard of the guy and can't do anything about him. My ancestors, when they were living, couldn't do anything about him either. Betsy Phillips likes to feel superior to us and try to lord it over the place to which she has transplanted herself. Those Yankees can't get enough of us after they've fouled their own nests. They're piling in here and trashing our home, too. Where are you gonna run next?
