TL;DR: Service is spotty, food is mediocre, though they have a great booze selection and are very kind to drunks.

Like others, I was wondering what they were building for all those months in front of Frugal MacDoogal's. I'm also wondering why more businesses don't put up some kind of "coming soon" sign while they are being built. Before I get too far along, I want to explain my rating. I was torn between 3 and 4 stars. Since they are new (and hopefully improving), I went with a 4, but my rating might have also been inspired a little by the round of Woodford Reserve Four Wood bourbon my friend bought us!

A couple of guys in our group do enjoy their bourbons and they were the main reason we ended up here. When we are out, they will order typically want something fancy like Blanton's while I'm happy with Jim Beam or a beer. Everyone in our group likes burgers though, and we agree that the food was good, not the best ever but not bad. My cheeseburger was big and cooked right and the sweet potato fries were tasty.

The environment is very nice and the beer and spirits selections are impressive. Didn't take long to get service once we seated ourselves, but we were so loud it was probably hard to ignore us. Prices are reasonable and we think the potential there, especially once the weather is good enough to take advantage of the outdoor seating.

I've wandered in twice minutes before closing after ragers at the breweries down the road, and they've been kind enough to let me buy their last plates of the night and get me a cab. Super nice of them, and I won't begrudge them my money for it!

I caught the scent of delicious hickory smoke wafting through the parking lot. This was a good sign. I "checked in" on Yelp and received an offer for "1 free Hand Rub." Despite the obvious and hilarious double entendre, I declined the offer. I prefer to make my own rubs.

After a quick perusal of the menu, I decided to make my 3 Meat Combo a true cross-section of America: Tennessee pork shoulder, Texas beef brisket, and St. Louis pork ribs. For my two sides, I picked potato salad and mac & cheese. Their combos also come with either cornbread or toast, which is a no-brainer of a decision.

The mac & cheese was creamy and cheesy, but nothing special. The potato salad was slightly sweet, with just enough mustard to help the taste without being overpowering. Their cornbread has a flaky consistency similar to pound cake, and was equally as sweet. This was a great palate cleanser in between the side dishes and the main event.

I ended up with a leaner cut of brisket, which despite my fears was actually very tender. My slices had a dark black crust and a deep red smoke ring. The flavors were really nice, and there was plenty of smoke. It wasn't quite the Central Texas brisket I hoped for, but it was still very good.

The pork shoulder had a nice smoky hue and lots of bark mixed throughout. The meat was tender, but bordering on mushy. The bark packed the most flavor, though the rest also had a nice taste. There was a decent amount of smoke here too.

Their St. Louis ribs had a good crust and a decent smoke ring. They weren't as meaty as I would have liked, but the flavors were great. Each bite had ample smoke, although some coarse black pepper would have made the crust even better. The meat was tender, succulent, and juicy, but not falling off the bone. And yes, that's a good thing.

Surprisingly, the pulled pork shoulder was my favorite part of this meaty trio. I usually find myself unimpressed by pulled pork, but Jack's proved that any meat can be fantastic if you know how to smoke it.

You'll find this place in an old converted house just south of campus. Despite the meek, unassuming facade, it has lots of atmosphere and character inside. The decor is a bit haphazard, but I liked it. There is also a large outdoor patio that I'm sure plays well with the nearby coeds.

I ordered exactly what I came for: The Barnyard Dog. This bad boy comes with pulled pork, bbq sauce, and coleslaw. Fabulous!

Most places offering a "bbq hotdog" simply drizzle a little sauce and call it good, but not The Dog. I ended up with heaping portions of slaw and pulled pork. The big, plump hotdog was a great support structure for the hefty toppings. The crunchy slaw paired really well with the tender pork, and the sugary sweet sauce tied everything together nicely. On the down side, I couldn't find any smoke, but that's really my only complaint.

Obviously a hotdog pales in comparison to true barbecue (especially if you're a Texan), but this dog was delicious in its own right. I'll definitely be back.

As a native Texan, Judge Bean unsurprisingly and thankfully gravitates toward brisket rather than pulled pork. A man after my own heart. He is also apparently a descendent of the infamous Texas lawman Judge Roy Bean, which is just awesome.

Part of me was anticipating a counter-service barbecue joint, but Judge Bean's uses waitresses. As I frequently do when dining alone, I saddled up to the bar. The very friendly bartender took great care of me. In fact, everyone I encountered here was exceptionally welcoming. Clearly the staff has been instructed on the finer points of Texas charm as well as Texas 'que.

Since Judge Bean's specializes in Texas-style barbecue, and since I was feeling a little homesick, a Texas Trinity was in order. I got their 3-Meat Smokehouse Combo with brisket, ribs, and sausage, as well as potato salad and cowboy beans for my two sides. I also couldn't help tacking on a piece of their so-called Texas Sushi for good measure.

My Texas Sushi appetizer came out first. What you have here is a jalapeno stuffed with sausage and cream cheese, wrapped in brisket. It's kind of like a California roll, except for men. The brisket had a nice smoke ring and was quite tender despite being a leaner cut of meat. I found a great hit of smoke and heat in each bite, tempered nicely by the cream cheese. Good thing I had a big glass of sweet tea to cool things down. The entire thing was absolutely fantastic.

I enjoyed their mayonnaise-based potato salad, which was a nice change of pace from the mustard-based potato salads I usually find in my travels. Without the overpowering mustard flavors, I could really taste the pickles and pimento. According to the menu, the cowboy beans are "not a sleeping partners favorite," so I'll apologize in advance to my wife. The beans had a ton of flavor, and there was definitely some spiciness to them.

The brisket had a deep red smoke ring which perfectly matched the equally smoky flavor. The dark black bark was also extremely tasty. Though lean, the brisket was magnificently tender. What little fat there was had been rendered beautifully. In addition to signifying the proper cooking time/temperature, this also tells me that Judge Bean's truly cares about their product.

Barbecued sausage seems to be a rare find in Middle Tennessee, so the Czech in me was happy to see it at Judge Bean's. The casings were very crisp, with each bite "popping" in my mouth. I could really taste the smoke, which isn't always the case with sausage. This was most assuredly not made in-house, but it was still really tasty.

These ribs didn't have as much of a crust as I was expecting. I did, however, appreciate that they weren't served drowning in sauce. The meat was very tender, but sadly had no bone retention. Perhaps this was an attempt to appease local demands for "falling-off-the-bone" ribs. That being said, they had a nice smoke level and an all-around great flavor.

Next time I eat at Judge Bean's, I may just order up a dozen pieces of Texas Sushi and call it good.

Hard to beat Soulshine overall. Food is pretty good and prices are too. Music almost every night and no cover charge. Good selection of beer and huge 2nd story outdoor patio. One of my faves and you never know who you might see jammin' in there (from celebrities to up and coming new blues rock artists). One of the best spots in Midtown for sure.

Stepped in for a few, but stayed for awhile. Cool spot to for date night. Just a bit dark and the TVs could be larger. The food smelled great, I had already eaten but I live close and will be back!

Cafe Coco"s Italian Market And Kitchen is an awesome place to go for authentic Italian food and desserts,the service is great , my fave dish is Tortellini Elliston and the baked ziti is pretty good too, as well as the pizza..Tuesday are pie and pint night for 10.00 and wens is half off bottle wines..We have been there many times . love this place !!!!!!!

I've eaten here several times now, and there's not a lot to say other than the chicken is really good; My favorite in town. If you know the intersection of 19th & Broadway, you know you shouldn't arrive expecting to park right at the location, so expect to walk a block or more to get there. Sometimes you get lucky and there is a space in the lot during off-peak. Also, you are going to wait for your chicken; It's cooked to order and the kitchen is small. Again, arriving off-peak will get you faster service, and ensure all the seats aren't taken. Finally, the chicken is fried proper, and tastes great. I recommend the dark portions. You get an entire joint, thigh and leg, and they are much more moist than the white portions. Skip the small plates and pony up the extra couple of bucks for the large plates. Take home the extra pieces of chicken for a midnight snack, as it's well worth the minimal added cost. I've tried all the heat: The Hot is REALLY hot for most folks. The Damn Hot is my favorite, but I would not recommend Damn Hot or Shut-the-cluck-up to those who are not melt-your-face junkies like I am. If you find after the fact that your order is too mild, they'll happily provide you with a ramikin of their sauce on the side. I always get greens and fries with my plate, but really, let's face it, you don't go to Hattie B's for the sides. The greens are good, the fries are standard issue crinkle fries, and they taste fine. The banana pudding gets raved about, but I haven't tried it. The beer is a real plus at a hot chicken joint, because nothing goes better with fried food of your choice than an cold brew. The staff has always been very nice. So, in conclusion, I highly recommend Hattie B's. Five stars for the chicken and staff, but the parking and seating bring down the rating just a tad, let's say to about 4.2 stars. Enjoy!

We were starving and wanted something hot but we also wanted chicken so we went to Hattie B’s Hot Chicken. When we arrived, the aroma met us at the door. The first thing I saw was Miss Renita with her big grin, and a big ass chalkboard menu on the wall. The décor is nice and the establishment is very clean. This chicken joint does not have a lot of seating inside, but it has plenty on the covered front porch.

They offer white and dark meat chicken, wings, tenders (grilled or fried), and ½ bird. The temps that you can get are Southern which has no heat; Mild a touch of heat, Hot they say is just right, and DAMN HOT. They also offer various southern side dishes, desserts; beer, fountain drinks, tea, and lemonade (needed some more sugar). I sampled the southern greens they were ok, but not the favorite. We both ordered DAMN HOT tenders with some fries, pimento mac & cheese (creamy and stupendous), baked beans, and slaw. When that sauce says “DAMN HOT” it felt like the devil was tap dancing on my tongue with hot shit on his shoes. The chicken was tasty (tasted a lot of cayenne pepper), but all I could finish was the sides, pickles, and bread. On the other hand he finished my chicken and his and didn’t even take a sip of water until it was all gone. One thing is the menu said “JUMBO TENDERS” but they were normal size; however we also enjoyed the banana pudding it was really F’ing awesome. We talked to and overheard people saying that the chicken, service, and wait time is better here than at other hot chicken places.

There is not a lot of parking in there lot cause Gigi’s has a sign for most of the spots. The service was great Miss Renita made our night we joked, laughed, and she made us feel right at home. The chicken is worth going back for as well as the staff. This place is a real game changer for midtown.

Nashville is known for country music, George Straight, guitars, hot chicken and more country music. But Nashville is starting to break ground in the food culture. They’re doing so by making some really good ass burgers. Nashville’s very own Battle of the Burgers: as what we like to call it, is starting to turn heads and heighten our taste buds. So of course we had to go to Burger Up. I’ve heard really good things about this place and very few people seem to not like this place. So naturally, we had to go give this place our hit and review.

From the start, I got the “Urban Outfitters” vibe as soon as we walked through the door. Everything was so sleek with wood seats, wooden bar and yes, wooden tables. The gigantic windows allow the sun to shine through, which gives the place more warmth and life. It is as if Urban Outfitters had branched off and made a burger joint (home of the tight pants and deep v-necks). No mainstream found here, just a vintage look and Neutral Milk Hotel playing in the background. Ok, ok…That was a bit of a stretch, BUT this place puts out a great vibe, it makes you want to come back.

Now to the good stuff! The burgers were unbelievably good. It caught me off guard, on how good they truly were. Every ingredient is local. The beef is organically fed for all you healthy picky ass eaters. We ordered two burgers, the recommended Woodstock burger, which has Benton’s bacon, white cheddar, and Jack Daniel’s maple ketchup on it. That shit was great. It actually tasted fresh, which seems odd to say, but that was the first thought that popped into my head. The second burger that was ordered was the turkey burger. GOOD GAWD! Best turkey burger I’ve ever had the pleasure to eat thus far. Thumbs up to the cook. The burgers were done right. The truffle fries made for a great side (golden brown with a little salt). The homemade ketchup they served went well with the burgers and fries. It doesn’t taste like normal ketchup, a bit on the sweeter side, but something definitely to give a try. For dessert we shared the Krispy Kreme doughnut pudding with grand mariner crème anglaise. Sounds like some fancy shit, right? Well it melted in my mouth. So fresh, so delicious, and so gone off my plate, well that’s all I got to say about that. Plain and simple, it was great and I recommend you try that good ass dessert when you eat there.

Everyone has an opinion, but too many people are complaining about the prices at this nice burger joint. They use great quality products, so you will spend a little extra cash for that. I love that they offer tons of items like chicken wings, salads, fried oysters, and plenty of burgers (that’s a given). Burger Up fits right in the neighborhood of 12th South. The only question I have is ,when will they make those vintage, extra washed, overpriced wool Burger Up tee’s that we all crave for (ha ha), and are those tight ass nut hugging jeans part of their uniform?!

My wife and I set out about two years ago to work our way through the local restaurants by having a Saturday lunch at a different restaurant every week. The Yellow Porch has certainly made tour goal difficult as we seem to have been pulled back to this (almost) hidden treasure in Berry Hill.Of late we seem to find excuse to route our errands down Thompson Lane and oh! There's The Yellow Porch. Let's grab a quick cup of celery bleau cheeze soup as long as we're this close. We are always treated as friends dropping in and not as customers and as we look around it seems everyone else has the same impression. Please keep up the good work.

Whoa baby! Killer burgers! My husband and I have been on a quest for awesome burgers in and around Nashville. This place came very close to 5 stars. Very nice vintage decor, although felt a little fancy for a burger joint. Luckily it wasn't crowded, I think we came on the early bird side. The service was... ok, we were not ignored, but not really waited on either. My husband was asked if he wanted a drink refill only after they took our plates away; to be fair, we do eat quickly. As we were waiting for the check, i noticed that all of the men working had the exact same big black plastic hipster eye-glasses and I pondered if that was just a coincidence or part of the uniform.

Ok, now for the burgers. Juicy, extremely flavorful beef, nice char and cooked to a perfect medium rare. The mouth watering bacon that came on my burger was thick cut, sweet and smokey. Really fantastic! The lightly sweet and soft bun complimented the burger and took it to an exceptional level. My only complaint was the size of the burger. It was too small. I wanted more! It was $11 for an, albeit incredibly delicious, but disappointingly small burger. Next time that I go, and I will be back, I will order a double. I'm not exactly sure what that will do to the price, but I think it will be worth it!

Oh, and I loved the fries. They were crisp, salty, and hand cut. The specials also looked amazing, again, next time I will branch out. This visit was for a straight up burger review!

For Mexican Food by far this is my favorite spot in Nashville.
Service is great, food is delicious, and the decor breath taking. I took my mom for her birthday, they went out of their way to make her a fresh made margarita instead of serving her a house made with cheap tequila that only gives you a headache. I was impressed, that little detail has me going back at least once a month.

Great sushi restaurant in/near the city. I've been to some of the more expensive/upscale sushi bars in the city, they are not even close to having the service, quality and freshness of sushi as Peter's. If you want to be seen go to the other places, if you want great sushi with good service go to Peter's.

Living in Nashville since January 2012, it's sad to say that this is (a chain restaurant) has the best Pizza in town; that I've found. Consistent quality, service varies day to day; but you always get good pizza.
