I saw this show twice this weekend. Once on opening night and then came back Sunday. On Friday, I signed up to be a speller. (They include four audience members in the "Bee" during the first act.) When they called my name I followed instructions and within 5 minutes after the tone setting, lift you up out of your seat, smile making opening number, I was on stage sitting amongst a lively cast, perfectly in character and the spelling be began. When I heard the words they were having to spell, I was certain I wouldn't be up there long. Then, it was my turn. "Jihad" was the word. Correct. Second word, Demicaster. Correct. Third word. Some unknown irish term that I supposedly spelled correctly because I was the last audience speller to be eliminated in the first act.
The acting in this show was first rate. All the characters were exceptionally defined. The singing was georgeous. Harmonies were in tune. And the pit "orchestra" provided an eclectic accompaniment via cello, percussion, flute, saxophone, piano and drums.
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee is a romp through the range of emotions an adolescent experiences under the pressures of competition, social acceptance and just plain being a young adult. Something with which all of us can identify readily. And Street Theater's rendition could quite possible be as good as it gets.
Absolutely wonderful! It's so great to see original theater produced in Nashville. The music was quite inventive -- and that lead guitarist was extremely talented. I'd love to see people who like alternative theater really get out and support this kind of work.
See this show! It's clever and witty, highlighting some of Twain's strongest comic and emotionally-compelling commentary, while providing sharp lyics. It should be the duty of "Music City USA" to be a leader in creating new stage musicals. KUDOS to PBT for doing just that, and rather successfully.
Great effort! Witty, fun, unique and eye-opening take on a man we all think we already "know." All that, and impressive music, too.
Re: “Moesse Art Show”
Fun! This artist's stuff is really interesting. Some is energetic and exciting, some calm and soothing. Use of color is great and at times daring. And given it's at the Mad Platter one gets to enjoy a great meal too!
