The 18-year-old freshman with the 90-mph pitch can bring the heat, all right: His coach at Vanderbilt, Tim Corbin, calls Gray's curveball "maybe the best we've ever seen at this level." That's pretty high praise, considering that former Vandy pitcher David Price went No. 1 overall in the Major League Baseball draft two years ago. Speaking of the draft, this year Gray went so far as to write a letter to MLB and its teams asking not to be drafted, because he was just that set on playing for the Commodores. (In heaven, Charlie Hawkins beams.) Lucky for us, that means we'll get to see him possibly at the plate as well as on the mound—he hit over .400 his senior year at Smyrna, after all. Here's to the Sonny side of Vandy baseball. —STEVE HARUCH
