People have every right to line up outside big-box stores at midnight if they choose. But if you’re sick of corporations designing a world where our lives revolve around buying stuff, come out to an event that’s more aligned with a world where buying stuff revolves around our lives. The day after Thanksgiving, East Nashville’s sustainability-focused general store The Green Wagon hosts 5 Points Friday, and the tagline pretty much says it all: “Skip the mall, shop local.” Well, almost all — in addition to discounted merchandise from area stores, there will be food from local restaurants, a home brewing competition and workshop, and live music all day. And the whole event will also serve as a fundraiser for Promise Neighborhood, a program through the Martha O’Bryan Center that benefits the Stratford High School cluster. Sure beats lining up at the trough of capitalism in the dead of night.
