If wintertime cabin fever is already getting to you, a day trip to Gallatin might be just what the doctor ordered, and Square Space Gallery is the perfect focal point. Housed in a century-old bank building—there are even works hanging in the old vault, whose mammoth steel door is a work of art unto itself—Square Space is a fabulous room for art, and the surrounding town square, which recently underwent a facelift, is quite charming, and only 30 or so minutes away. (Search “Gallatin Square renovation” on YouTube to see the progress.) The gallery’s current show, 5 Elements, features mostly upbeat works by five artists who all take inspiration from the natural environment: former Local Color gallery owner Ron York’s fanciful animal paintings, Matthew Hasty’s sunsets and moonlit skies, John Hillman’s abstract landscapes, Ellen L. Zink’s seasonal representations, and Jennifer Utterback’s earthy, abstract mixed-media works. If you’re there on a weekday, try lunch next-door at Greenberry’s—if the spread they laid out at Square Space’s October reception was any indication, Greenberry’s alone may be worth the drive.
