Age of Anxiety
2017
shot, edited, composed, and directed by AC Carter
from self titled album by Lambda Celsius
During the past few years, it's been fascinating to watch the evolution of Ann Catherine Carter's music project Λ°C (also known as Lambda Celsius, formerly known as Lavender). Before she started making music, Carter was a painter and sculptor, and was formerly co-curator of the Wedgewood-Houston art gallery The Packing Plant (a different gallery called Mild Climate is now in its place).
That helps her bring a different perspective to her music than you might get from someone who's focused solely on pop music — a very cool thread to have in your scene. As Carter has shifted her focus from funky noise toward post-punk and electronic pop, she's continued to work with the idea of taking rigid, grid-like structures and bending them out of their manufactured shape and into something organic.
She's released a slew of singles, demo recordings and EPs, and the full-length Lambda Celsius dropped in June (we got a taste of it back in April at Drkmttr's grand reopening). One of the record's standout tracks is "Age of Anxiety," which examines a person's power to alter their image and the forces that might cause them to want to — "Don't remember me as who I am, but who I pretend to be," she sings. Carter has shot, directed and edited a music video for the piece. It uses some interesting manipulations of perspective to reinforce the point about the manipulation of images, and we're very pleased to premiere it today — check it out above.
