Following a four-album run full of dramatic twists and turns that culminated in the righteous LP
No Control, Turbo Fruits officially disbanded earlier this year. The group's most consistent lineup had been in the process of going their separate ways for some time: last year, lead guitarist Kingsley Brock co-founded
Reality Somethingand bassman Dave "Sweet Davey Titties" McCowen got married and moved to Seattle, while drummer Matt Hearn joined Bully this spring.
But what about frontman, chief songwriter and savvy entrepreneur Jonas "JoNasty" Stein? His next step was to take a long vacation, traveling around Colombia and Ecuador by motorcycle with pal Nick Kraus. The pair put together a video diary, which we're very pleased to premiere above.
In the vid, you'll see the pair hanging with locals, chilling with alpacas, bungee jumping and generally having a high old time. You'll also hear Stein's first new song since the band's dissolution, a catchy clave-tinged, horn-kissed tune he's called "Chillsesh." JEFF the Brotherhood's Jamin Orrall plays drums, Deer Tick's Rob Crowell drops some sax, Belmont percussion prof Todd Kemp riffs on the steel drum, and Battle Tapes' Jeremy Ferguson, who's been part of nearly everything Stein's recorded since the days of Be Your Own Pet, engineered the session.
“I have no idea what’s next, but I’m excited to share music without any of the pressures of being in a band or being on a label,” Stein says in an email. "I’ve been in Turbo Fruits as a duo, trio, then a four-piece band, but making music by myself, without having to compromise in any way, feels exhilarating.”
