Yun and Jung Choo, Korean immigrants who married here, are best known among local diners as the owners of Samurai Sushi on Elliston Place, but it is Hai Woon Dai in LA (Lower Antioch) that attracts their fellow countrymen. The young couple opened this small and sparsely decorated restaurant in January 2006, installing Jung’s mother in the kitchen. The dishes are described in very fundamental terms, but numbered to ease the ordering process, a challenge due to the language barrier. Thankfully, if you follow your mother’s advice and don’t talk with your mouth full, once you have your order in, few words other than “mmmmmm” and “more please” are needed. The banchan—complimentary side dishes delivered to the table just before the meal—are especially good here, but don’t fill up and miss the bibimbap, bulgogi, galbi and stir fry plates. Of note, #19 or ugoji haejangguk, a soup that promises to “relieve the hangover.” Not so sure of that, but it’s worth a try.
