Acorn
114 28th Ave. N.
Nashville, TN 37203
320-4399
One block off West End, The Acorn has thrived on its quiet, shaded side-street lot and taken firm root in Nashville’s dining firmament. Credit savvy and focused young owner John Leonard, a native of Washington, D.C., who stepped out on a limb and opened The Acorn in 2003 with his wife Pamela. By all accounts, it was an impressive debut, winning several reader-voted Scene Best of Nashville awards in its first year of operation. There’s a lot to love—the sexy, sophisticated main dining room uses rich colors, lush texture, low lights, comfortable furnishings and elegant accoutrements to set the stage for romantic dinners, celebratory occasions or professional preoccupations. At the top of the stairs, another bar and lounge vibrate with youthful energy, while the second-floor patio nestled in the treetops is a favorite location for a casual bite and drinks with friends. The food is attuned to the season, committed to quality and artfully presented.

The Basement books an interesting mix of touring acts, local rock/pop bands, singer-songwriters and more, thanks to the participation of Grimeys partners Mike Grimes and Doyle Davis. Below Grimeys New & Preloved Music lies a small, dark cave, where the music flows like Yazoo brew and the audience sits within spitting distance of performers on the low-rising stage. Run by Geoff Donovanone of Nashvilles best bartendersand Grimeys owner (and Guilty Pleasures guitarist) Mike Grimes, The Basement books everything from indie blog darlings like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah to the Altar Call Old Time Gospel Hour. The Basements 100-person capacity and no-smoking rule make it a great venue to relax and listen rather than jockey for space and a view of the performers

Caribbean Hut
1316 Antioch Pike
Nashville, TN 37211
832-3547
This small stone house offers many of the dishes one might find in
Jamaica: curried chicken, curried goat, curried potatoes, jerk chicken,
beef patties, fried plantains, roti, oxtail and beans and rice. The
ripe plantains, sliced into inch-thick nuggets and sautéed with butter
and a bit of sugar and salt, come on the side of most plates or can be
ordered à la carte. The curries are spicy but not too hot, and the goat
in particular is very flavorful. The only disappointment is the
Jamaican beef patties, which come frozen from a box.
