  • Acorn
    114 28th Ave. N.
    Nashville, TN 37203
    320-4399
One block off West End, The Acorn has thrived on its quiet, shaded side-street lot and taken firm root in Nashville’s dining firmament. Credit savvy and focused young owner John Leonard, a native of Washington, D.C., who stepped out on a limb and opened The Acorn in 2003 with his wife Pamela. By all accounts, it was an impressive debut, winning several reader-voted Scene Best of Nashville awards in its first year of operation. There’s a lot to love—the sexy, sophisticated main dining room uses rich colors, lush texture, low lights, comfortable furnishings and elegant accoutrements to set the stage for romantic dinners, celebratory occasions or professional preoccupations. At the top of the stairs, another bar and lounge vibrate with youthful energy, while the second-floor patio nestled in the treetops is a favorite location for a casual bite and drinks with friends. The food is attuned to the season, committed to quality and artfully presented.
  • All We Seabees
    Unknown

Detroit expat’s All We Seabees have a wide musical range that runs from jangly riff-driven punk to subdued chamber pop. The suburban anti-heroes that inhabit their songs include alcoholic fathers and troubled Catholic girls.

  • The Basement
    1604 8th Ave. S.
    Nashville, TN 37203
    254-8006
The Basement books an interesting mix of touring acts, local rock/pop bands, singer-songwriters and more, thanks to the participation of Grimey’s partners Mike Grimes and Doyle Davis. Below Grimey’s New & Preloved Music lies a small, dark cave, where the music flows like Yazoo brew and the audience sits within spitting distance of performers on the low-rising stage. Run by Geoff Donovan—one of Nashville’s best bartenders—and Grimey’s owner (and Guilty Pleasures guitarist) Mike Grimes, The Basement books everything from indie blog darlings like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah to the Altar Call Old Time Gospel Hour. The Basement’s 100-person capacity and no-smoking rule make it a great venue to relax and listen rather than jockey for space and a view of the performers

    http://bigrivergrille.com
This restaurant and brewery started on the Tennessee River in Chattanooga; the Cumberland River outpost has outlasted many of its neighboring eateries downtown by offering a product—good, reasonably priced pub food and tasty brews—that does not rely on the fleeting attention span of trend-seekers. California-style pizzas are offered with a selection of unique toppings.
  • Blackstone Restaurant & Brewery
    1918 West End Ave.
    Nashville, TN 37203

The big bar and its adjoining lounge, outfitted like an English men’s club, are always packed with regulars devoted to the home-brew considered by many to be Nashville’s best. The menu is designed to complement, not compete with, the suds: hot soft pretzels with a selection of zesty mustards, haystack onion rings with fiery jalapeño mayo dip, and wood-burning brick oven pizzas.

    577-2262
Randy Rayburn, veteran restaurateur and owner of Sunset Grill and Midtown Café, partners up with two longtime employees—Sunset GM Craig Clifft and executive chef Brian Uhl—to create Cabana, an ambitious project  that will put the trio’s legendary talents to the test. Bar, restaurant, lounge and a 2,900-square-foot year-round outdoor patio is the multiple-personality concept envisioned by the team, offering something for everyone—the drinker, the diner and scene-makers looking for a late-night hang. Ten private cabanas—each outfitted with a flat-screen TV—offer the ultimate in private parties. Uhl envisions his menu as playful and spontaneous, with items like chicken-wing lollipops, mini lobster corn dogs, oyster shooters and Tennessee Sliders.

Nashville’s historic Cannery Row, off Eighth Avenue South in an old converted warehouse, lie the Mercy Lounge and the Cannery Ballroom, two of Nashville’s premier music venues. The second-story Mercy Lounge offers standing room for 500 people and features pool tables, a large bar and pinball machines. Downstairs sits the renovated Cannery Ballroom, a massive venue with standing room for 1,000. Since the ’80s, The Lounge/Ballroom has welcomed some of the nation’s top touring acts, including Jane’s Addiction, Gregg Allman and Iggy Pop.
  • Caribbean Hut
    1316 Antioch Pike
    Nashville, TN 37211
    832-3547
This small stone house offers many of the dishes one might find in Jamaica: curried chicken, curried goat, curried potatoes, jerk chicken, beef patties, fried plantains, roti, oxtail and beans and rice. The ripe plantains, sliced into inch-thick nuggets and sautéed with butter and a bit of sugar and salt, come on the side of most plates or can be ordered à la carte. The curries are spicy but not too hot, and the goat in particular is very flavorful. The only disappointment is the Jamaican beef patties, which come frozen from a box.
