A promising debut among the indie killing fields doesnt amount to much these days, given the wash of enjoyably mediocre fads hitting weekly. But Here We Go Magics self-titled kickoff earlier this year may actually be one of the few that could truly capitalize on that promise. In their better moments, the Brooklyn quintet sail very near to the pop-fusion of Paul Simon or lighter Eno due to frontman Luke Temples quirky pseudo-Afrobeat leanings, doused in a moody milieu of hazy synths, distant tribal percussion and sweetly tuned guitars. At their lesser moments, their sound-collage approach feels borrowed from so much hypnagogic electronica (Panda Bear, et al), falling well short of their overly ambitious moniker. But while christening the stage for headliners The Walkmen may be a tall order to fill, Here We Go Magic still offer far more than simple sleight of hand.
