Re: “The Weekly Open Thread: Restaurants and Smartphones

If I'm solo then I'll be on my phone. If I am with someone else, especially if it's just one person, I make a point to put the phone away. I don't think it slows table turnover. That just doesn't make sense. When I'm on my phone the most at restaurant I'm alone and I usually eat pretty quickly in that scenario.

@fancycwabs I know some shops are trending towards this. Fido, for example, has started shutting off it's wifi during peak meal times and I don't think they have it turned on during the weekends at all. I don't mind the trend. I don't like going to a coffee shop and being treated like I showed up to someone's personal work space uninvited.

Fear and loathing at PITW

yoyo is fine. I wish G Martin would return to do some salt rubbing.

The nervousness here about November is fun to see; it will continue and if there is a big Repub landslide? Well, I can't wait to see the analyses by the regulars here.

DJIA fell 300 yesterday. Disasters overseas with an incompetent sitting in the WH surrounded by boy helpers and a military run by lesbians. And, then there is the southern border. The people do not seem to be buying the notion that they hate brown people.

I like what I see.

Re: “The Weekly Open Thread: Restaurants and Smartphones

I will usually take a cue from the person or people I'm with. If it's a casual dining/drinking thing and people are all checking their social media, taking pics, etc. I'm more likely to do it too. If I'm by myself I will be on my phone a lot more than if I'm with others, I think that is out of some awkwardness of being alone more than lacking the ability to stay off my phone.

Also if I'm in a bar not so much sometimes but in a restaurant or coffee shop, my phone is on mute or vibrate only. It's annoying if someone's phone is constantly beeping, whistling or ringing in a space where others are subject to it.

Re: “The Weekly Open Thread: Restaurants and Smartphones

If I'm dining solo, I use the smartphone a lot, mostly to kill time while waiting for the food to arrive. If I'm accompanied, much less so.

Re: “Wait ... Diane Black Just Endorsed Jim Tracy?

It's sort of refreshing to find out that the Repubs have SOME limits to what they will tolerate in the name of ideological purity.

No Republican should ever be allowed anywhere near the Presidency until they stop with the deception about the merits and cost of that ridiculous war.

What about the 4500 US soldiers killed for Saddam's supposed bluff against Iran that Bush and his idiot cronies send into combat. Good thing? 30000+ wounded in action? Also good?

Re: “The Skinny on MNPS' TCAP Scores

1. The buses run whether students are on them or not. Adding a student to a Metro bus costs almost nothing. Adding a student to a Metro bus *may* help develop future bus-riders; and, if you care about that sort of thing, that is good. Buses are expensive to run and maintain. I'd rather have a transit company running and maintaining buses than a school district, all other things being equal. Additionally, school buses are the reason high school starts at 7:00 a.m. and middle school at 8:55. I can't imagine what adding bus routes to accomodate kids who take Metro buses would do to the start times; just think of what happens when Joelton gets smidgen of ice (all schools shut down).

2. The mixing of kids of different ages in a school is a ongoing issue, and educators and parents all have opinions. Here (http://www.mnps.org/page86807.aspx) MNPS acknowledges the issue. At West End MS, 5th and 6th grades are, generally, on the bottom floor and 7th and 8th on the top. I couldn't determine when MNPS moved 5th grade to middle school - anyone know? It may have been in the last 20 years.

What I find hilarious is that the ones accusing others of bigotry somehow think that they are innocent. What a knee-slapper!

Coffee shops would have much higher table turn rate if they banned laptops.

Re: “The Daily Links: Israeli Intelligence and The Greatest Story Never Told

Revelation, yes, you should be ashamed.

Who on this board do you hate and feel is a demagogue? Do you hate the Baptist who feels homosexuality is a sin? You certainly may feel he is wrong-headed- but hate him? If he writes that on this board, you hate him. Right?

Appealing to the lowest common denominator? Liberals/Dems own that one.

Wedge issues are abortion, gay rights, carrying guns etc. The big ones are our economy and foreign policy. I hope you know that.

Re: “A guide to next week's elections, from school board races to Supreme Court justices

In District 8, Becky Sharpe is heavily funded and supported by the unions. All of her flyers and signs are paid for and designed by the unions with their logos all over them. Don't feel sorry for Becky as she is portrayed by the Scene as a victim raising her own money from scratch. Her supporters act like angry rabid dogs and turned me off with their constant bantering and fear tactics. That's why I voted for Mary Pierce who is organized, articulate, creative and level-headed and actually wants to do something different to improve the schools for all kids.

"state governments are doing more, and with ever-larger budgets."

And the State works very hard at hiding it's actions from the public so that Gov Ramsey....er...Haslam can cut underhanded deals hand out more welfare to his corporate cronies.

Re: “A guide to next week's elections, from school board races to Supreme Court justices

Those Senate districts are a classic example of gerrymandering. Why did no one challenge them in court?

We could and should devise a fair method to produce balanced and competitive districts. A software program could do it in about 5 minutes.

Re: “A guide to next week's elections, from school board races to Supreme Court justices

"Haslam is widely popular. "

Only because so many folks take Fox News and the the press releases of the Teanuts as the Gospel.
Were folks to be fully informed they'd be aware of his crooked deals, corporate cronyism, and disdain for the citizens who aren't rich white men, he'd be wildly UN-popular.
