Re: “Local Comics to Host 'Guinness World Records’ Breaking Comedy Show,' April 12-19

Love how talented these guys are! The fact that they are willing to work to hard for this goal and bring the funny to Nashville is freaking awesome!! Can't wait!!!

Re: “Local Comics to Host 'Guinness World Records’ Breaking Comedy Show,' April 12-19

Thank you for posting this! It's going to be a crazy week. Zanies and the WWCF people have actually been very helpful and supportive of this project behind the scenes, so don't count them out yet.

Re: “Josie and the Pussycats, the They Live of Tween Pop Musicals, Midnight at Belcourt

Mark Harris wrote a contrarian piece about the "Upset at the Oscars" conversation:

http://grantland.com/hollywood-prospectus/oscars-academy-awards-2015-best-picture-crash/

He notes that the movies passed over for Oscars -- and the Belcourt's list is a good sample -- tend to be be "dark, cynical, existential or nihilist, physically or emotionally violent, R-rated, and somewhat savage in outlook. They are often by, about, and for the alienated, the skeptical, and the enraged."

The people who are most passionate about these "savage" movies tend to be young males, a.k.a. "dudebros." Their gods are Scorsese, Tarantino and the Coen Brothers. They also love David Fincher and Paul Thomas Anderson.

Great directors, but there are other great directors who don't make movies for dudebros. As Harris writes, the people who are outraged by ORDINARY PEOPLE's Best Picture Oscar have probably never seen that excellent film. Or they saw it and didn't understand it.

Re: “Josie and the Pussycats, the They Live of Tween Pop Musicals, Midnight at Belcourt

I don't have a problem with the Oscar nominations (although I don't take the Oscars very seriously, either). Glad to see Linklater and Wes Anderson nominated for the first time in their careers. Glad for Michael Keaton, too. Of course, most of the coverage was "SELMA got screwed," even though it did get a Best Picture nom.

Re: “Think You've Seen Technicolor? Douglas Sirk's Written on the Wind at Belcourt

Also, The Belcourt is showing this in 35mm. Game, set, match.

Re: “Josie and the Pussycats, the They Live of Tween Pop Musicals, Midnight at Belcourt

If you've never seen this, Mark, give it a chance. I can pretty much guarantee you this is the funniest movie playing this weekend in theaters. Unless THE WEDDING RINGER's preview is seriously underselling it.

The Belcourt February schedule is going up even as we speak. The "Upset at the Oscars" series of Best Picture nominees that got shafted (CITIZEN KANE, GOODFELLAS, BROKEBACK MOUNTAIN, SUNSET BLVD., PULP FICTION) is especially timely, given this year's nominees.

Re: “Josie and the Pussycats, the They Live of Tween Pop Musicals, Midnight at Belcourt

Undoubtedly the best movie to star Tara Reid and Rachel Leigh Cook!

At least Belcourt is showing BLUE VELVET and MAD MAX in February, so it's not all crap.

I could argue that shocking news could cause multiple simultaneous heart attacks.

Re: “An Inherent Vice/Boogie Nights Salute to 10 Porn Stars Who Went Legit

The John Holmes documentary, EXHAUSTED, would make a great double bill with BOOGIE NIGHTS, since Anderson lifted scenes and dialogue intact for his film's fake documentary by Amber Waves. (Tagline: "The story of a man who made love to 14,000 women: EXHAUSTED!")

And there was the Jamie Gillis film, ON THE PROWL, which inspired the sex-in-the-limo sequence in BOOGIE NIGHTS, as Anderson has acknowledged.

Re: “Want To Ride Your Bicycle in Nashville? Watch This.

As a bike commuter in Nashville for over five years now, I think Matthew has done a very fine job pointing out the major issues with cycling here in Nashville. I just wish he was wearing a helmet. Even when bike lanes are flawless, and everything is perfect, unexpected things can happen and it's best to keep your head safe.

"After having a minor heart attack, we called Santa, "

the writer and editor collaborated on a cardiac event!?

I blame the writer!

Re: “Want To Ride Your Bicycle in Nashville? Watch This.

This is cute but having been nearly killed not once, not twice but three times trying to ride my bike around Nashville I gave up.

No one knows the law. Some drivers see bicyclists as target practice. And it's dangerous enough just walking a sidewalk in Nashville, what with people texting and driving (nearly run over more times than I can count). You're putting your life in your hands if you ride a bike around here.

Annette also has a cameo in "10" along with Dorothy Lemay. She turned down the role that went to Elizabeth Brooks in "The Howling" due to concerns about violence in the film.

For my money, the best actress in porn history was Veronica Hart. She was in several low-budget mainstream films, most directed by Chuck Vincent, who was also moonlighting from the adult industry. Like Nina Hartley, she had a role in "Boogie Nights" as the judge in Julianne Moore's custody hearing scene.
