Re: “The Daily Links: Tikrit, One Direction, and Germanwings

The Center for Immigration Studies report is straight from data provided by USCIS, but that triggers your allergy to facts, commenter. CIS takes the long view and a stance for reducing immigration NUMBERS, and bases its reports and analyses on government data, most often U.S. Census data. Sometimes data from university researchers, labor analysts, and economists are included. CIS staffers include both conservatives and liberals, self-described. Their head researcher says he is a liberal. Also, a Pulitzered journalist left newspapers and became a CIS reporter.

No org is perfect, but CIS is respected by the Washington press corps.

The head of CIS is a former journalist of Armenian descent who was immersed in the immigrant experience and did not speak English till he was in kindergarten. He is one of the smartest, most informed people I've ever known. Mark Krikorian. I am more hardline than he is, by the way.

In other words, CIS is more credible and reliable than anything you can come up with, silly commenter.

I was in the mood to do immigration today. I don't know how long that will last.

Yoyo, when I post unregistered, the blog will put a hold on the comment if I include a link, so I don't. I don't register here anymore. There is no point.

The "Center for Immigration Studies"? Really?

How did yoyo miss this one? He is usually so good at finding the right-wing lunatic fringe web sites.

I love when one of these web sites describes themselves as being "an independent, non-partisan, non-profit, research organization". That's like Fox "News" calling themselves fair and balanced.

@Donna: Yeah, if your name doesn't print in red any link you provide won't print in red. However, you can add a note to copy and paste a black link into a search engine address box.

Regarding the Indiana law mentioned in the links above, I can't criticize it if a business is privately owned and unsubsidized by the taxpayers. Though I'm strongly for LGBT rights and equality, any of us as private business owners should have the right to refuse service to anyone we choose.

Vouchers. Another freeloader word. Them flea baggers have a case of that liberal sickness. I am wanting the flea baggers to make good on their promise of a tax free society.

Re: “The Daily Links: Tikrit, One Direction, and Germanwings

Oh, let's keep going about how great those Democrats are for working-class Americans. According to a recent report from the Center for Immigration Studies, government data obtained by a Freedom of Information Act request by CIS show more than 7.4 million work permits were issued to aliens from 2009 to 2014. "Because neither lawful permanent residents (green card holders) nor temporary work visa holders need a work permit, this amounts to a huge parallel work authorization system outside the numerical limits and categories set by Congress."

Jessica Vaughan, who wrote this February 2015 Backgrounder, has the breakdown on who received these work permits. More than 2.2 million went to illegal aliens or aliens unqualified for admission. Wildly, "2,860 work permits were issued to aliens who were denied asylum, were suspected of using fraudulent documents, were stowaways, or were refused at a port of entry."

Another 1.9 million work permits were issued to aliens whose status was unknown, not recorded, or not disclosed by USCIS. Ha. Work permits are gateway documents.

This Backgrounder can be read on CIS's Web site. I won't include the link, because this blog doesn't like that when I post unregistered.

Sounds like all of them will create more bureaucracy; more high paid jobs; and in the end nothing will change.

Re: “Obama Has Faith (and Tim)

Yeah, Count me as brainwashed too. I DO NOT trust ANY politician who is a democRAT, and that includes a few Republicans too. Since Obama slipped into office in '08, I don't trust any democrat supporter or voter. They support only the party not our great Nation. The musicians I used to listen to and bought their music; I don't any more. Goodbye Merle Haggard, Ralph "Hussein" Stanley, Toby Keith, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill (by the way I haven't lost my Southern roots or my taste in music). Oh, add old skanky Cheryl Crow and Dolly Parton in that bunch too. If you are a democrat or a democrat supporter, you are Godless because you are an abortionist, anti-prayer in schools (or anywhere else for that matter), Pro homosexual marriage (that hurts business people because they are being sued by homosexuals for not participating in their marriage rituals), their Beloved Leader's support for Bowe Bergdahl (who's desertion cost American soldier's Lives), and throw in democrats' anti Semitism for good measure. Thank you Charlie Clemens, Nothing New, and Doreen for your comments.

Re: “The Daily Links: Tikrit, One Direction, and Germanwings

Yoyo: Yeah, bye, bye, American pie. We'll never have that recipe again. No pie for you now, middle class. Yours is to shut up and bake.

The person commenting before you with the diversionary tactic should read up on the Democrats' history of corporate welfare in this state -- and in past and recent Congresses. As for taxing the "wealthy" more than their fair share, well, the numbers on the wall say that won't pay for all this social/demographic engineering.

Re: “Sidewalks, or the Lack Thereof

Several points to make.
Folks need to educate themselves on what sidewalks cost. Harding sidewalks are costing millions of dollars and are consuming most of Nashville's sidewalk budget. That budget is used for other less expensive projects as well as maintaining existing. The only reason it was even built in this poor neighborhood is because people were routinely getting maimed and killed routinely because those people HAVE to walk. We should prioritize our spend where people have to, not want to, and fight for this. Because a neighborhood is wealthy does not entitle them to facilities for their occasional recreational use over someone that walks daily to get food or to the bus stop.

Nashville's best walking is in the oldest parts of the city, because people used to have to walk. Post-WW2, everyone had a car and people flocked to the suburbs. Who needed sidewalks when no one needed them anymore? Now we pay.

Let's not talk about schools. Safe Routes to Schools is doing an ok job making sidewalks available around schools through federal grants. But, look where they put schools in relation to where people live. It's all but impossible for kids to walk, so we have fat kids.

Last but not least, let's use them if you have them. There's little worse than seeing a sidewalk with no one using it. Walking is not a sign that you're poor or criminal. It means you enjoy exercise and sunshine and fresh air. You can visit your neighbors and explore your neighborhood. Do it.

PS - Sharondale Rd,and Hillsboro Rd from 440 to the mall need sidewalks.
