Re: “15th Annual Country Music Critics' Poll

Agreed LMYERS.

I'm excited to see Sturgill at the top of the poll, but the author's take sort of sucks. Instead of focusing on the bad writing above, though, I'll say why I like Sturgill so much.

Every song that he writes is full of depth and thought. They're not cooked up, and I can actually tell that his experience is being poured into his songs. For example, when I hear his song Panbowl, where he sings about his favorite times of his childhood at Panbowl, which is presumable a lake town that his family lived around, I can't help but fell where he's coming from while simultaneously thinking back to my own experiences in a truly meaningful and unprecedented way.

Further, his ability to cover a song has to be unrivaled. He made The Promise into something that I barely recognized, but instantly couldn't get enough of.

At the end of the day, you're either an Elvis (soul) or Beatles (pop) guy. Sturgill's all soul, which is why I can't get enough.

Re: “12th and Porter to Close Feb. 28

It pains me to lose another venue to what will surely become some sort of 'luxury' living accommodations. BUT, after many shows and showcases there, my last experience was well over a year ago and terrible. After getting there early, the ass-hat working the door was so slow I missed 75% of the band I had a pre-ordered a ticket for.

+1 Frank

"North Gulch", really? This is getting out of hand.

Re: “Five Knives Release Video for 'Sugar'; Blogger Barfs in Own Mouth [Fresh Vid]

Christ almighty.

Forget your genre-bashing, forget who can "sing" and put that "if some pop music gets a pass, all pop music gets a pass" back in the dumpster behind the Genius Bar where you found it.

Let's just take the lyric from the hook at face value:
"I know what them boys want... "
Do you Five Knives? I was just sitting underneath a pile of women's lifestyle magazines asking myself that age old question. What the fuck DO them boys want? L'est we ignore the improper possessive pronoun, abusing grammar for effect – which is common and in and of itself and perfectly excusable – but coming from the same band who sang (and i paraphrase) "I'll shoot 'em in the back if they touch my stash", it's the same weak-ass streetwise white bread cultural appropriation that white kids love mimic given i sincerely doubt anyone in this band has any drugs worth stealing, a gun with which to shoot someone, much less a potential murder charge in their future. But hey, did Johnny Cash actually shoot a man just to watch him die? Hell, no. Fuck it. I'll let you have that one for the sake of artistic license. You guys are gangsta as fuck. so let's get to the real shit here: what DO them boys want?

Like candy? Kisses? Pussy? Can I just follow your lead here, play it safe, and solve for x with "pleasure"? This is the mystery about which you've chosen to write a song? Who is this song for? 12 year olds? Who wouldn't know this besides middle schoolers? But as this video illustrates, these are adult themes. Really really dumb adult themes. And i don't mean dumb as in bad, i mean dumb as in the lack of smart.
And that is essentially the problem. It is so over the top in undermining the common denominator, this song somehow says less than the 4min and 14 seconds of nothing that preceded its creation. The only thing separating it from a parody of pop culture de-evolution is its intent. If this song was from a Mike Judge film, it would be hilarious.

The difference between this and the rather enjoyable Charli XCX album starts with the basics - multiple stanzas of lyrics. Hooks that are catchy because they were written well and not simply repetitive. Choice of electronic instrumentation that doesn't grate the ears. The songs are about themes that are basic and certainly not underdone in pop music, but at least they are themes. This is a song about a word. I don't expect all pop music to be "smart", but a halfway decent double entendre would be nice. This is sensationalism from the inside out. If you can't give me substance, at least give me style and not a barb-wired bathtub of bad taste.

Re: “12th and Porter to Close Feb. 28

Memories of one decent night there. Occasionally whoever was in charge would rally and a night would go as planned. The scenario described above was more common. There were rumors for years about the sound people, that it was pay to play and bunch of other stuff. But we stopped going for good when we showed up to an extremely important showcase for particular artist in town who's career was sabotaged over and over again. They were supposed to be on at 8, by 11 still nothing and a major label debut ruined. This whole treating people like crap to be hip thing is over, as well as dark unfriendly cave dwelling staffers be warned; we are not tolerating the crap any longer, to many places and to many options to take abuse as a form of amusement for board and bitter bar staff and management.
Ditto on the Basement as the best club in Nashville hands down, always get a hello and a smile.
Label people love to joke what a great business it would be without Artists, well the Artists wonder how great it would be without the bar alcohol agenda involved!

Re: “Yes, The Open Meetings Law Means You Have to Speak Into The Mic

While I agree with most of Sherri Cole's post, "lifers" DO most certainly see a problem with the way things have always been done. We are the ones that brought this lawsuit. We SEE many problems here and are doing our damndest to change them. I was at the meeting, I couldn't hear, we complained by letters and email, WE got something done for the entire state concerning this problem. We are fighting USN and the IDB tooth and nail. There is MUCH more to this story.

Re: “Five Knives Release Video for 'Sugar'; Blogger Barfs in Own Mouth [Fresh Vid]

Is no worse that what many "supposed" critics of the modern era keep supporting like Beyoncé, Katy Perry and Kelly Clarkson and many others who couldn't sing and just yell with autotune. It's a whole lot of people who can't sing in this modern ear and also who have no artistic abilities. It's not about them being female, it's about them being fake, and terrible. There's nothing wrong with being brave enough to state the truth. Amy Winehouse is a real and amazing artist! And there are others who should be brought up, and no kudos given to no talents, because that's a critics supposed job, or at least it was in the past. But honestly even though this band is completely derivative and a rip off directly of some 80's stuff, it's better than people who purport to sing and write songs when they are just all autotune, even live, and you end up being able to hear it. IJS And don't get me started on all the terrible autotune new male artists who pose as singer, but who don't get a free pass from critics, since critics are mostly male.

I think I know good rock from bad but I really can't tell with this EDM stuff. I know it doesn't appeal to me. It's not made for me. I couldn't make it past 1:30 before stopping the video.

everyone loves Charli XCX?

Re: “12th and Porter to Close Feb. 28

Coming from LA recently, 12th and porter was one of my first Nashville rock scene experiences. The sound guy was rude and scolded my girlfriend for setting a cup down on an old, beat up (and drink stained) monitor, so she could tie her shoe. The bartenders were complete dicks, and the sound was good onstage, but the crowd apparently thought the bass was too much and couldn't hear the vocals. So, all in all, not impressed. Not sad about this. Basement is way better.

Re: “Yes, The Open Meetings Law Means You Have to Speak Into The Mic

Before I moved to Greeneville, TN I would have laughed at the incredulity of this situation. But having lived her for eight years now, the attitude of Greene County officials and industry leaders here is just what I expect. This is the most ridiculous place I have ever lived. Sunshine laws here and plenty of other statues meant to provide transparency and protect equal opportunity are ignored here. Lifers in Greeneville see no problem with the way things have always been done, it's the transplants like me and those looking on from the outside that say WHAT?

Re: “Five Knives Release Video for 'Sugar'; Blogger Barfs in Own Mouth [Fresh Vid]

So you don't like the song - I get it. Sometimes, people like to dance to mindless stuff with a beat. Is that news? Is that worth wishing they were tied to a rock in the desert? Why is it cool if Katy Perry does it, but uncool if these guys do it? I like "Brass Monkey" a lot, and that's not exactly Shakespeare either. I posted a video above by Five Knives that has plenty of grit and attitude. The new song is a more commercial attempt, apparently. It's also one song. It doesn't mean every song they do sounds like that. I understand you guys write about music, and you employ humor. I just don't see the need in making it so personal, and trying to humiliate a local band who plays rock/pop and is trying to make it. And again, I've seen these guys, and it was a good show. Florida Georgia line also are rich stars, and they play country. Picking on someone with the bank accounts they have is a different matter in my book. I've been on both sides of the trash talking on this blog, and I'm taking a step back from it. It's old, not cool, and in my opinion, went too far in this case. Thanks for the forum.

Some shaft: SELMA got a Best Picture nomination. Most directors would kill for their films to get shafted like that.
