Re: “Eastwood's American Sniper disappears inside its hero's unconflicted POV — a troubling place to be

SNIPER hits $200M, while Johnny Depp flops again. At least I don't have to see that awful MORTDECIA trailer again.

Maybe Depp should consider playing a realistic human being. I don't think he's done that since DONNIE BRASCO, way back in '97.

Re: “Why did Selma get the shaft from the Oscars?

Oprah Winfrey will get an Oscar if SELMA wins, because she's one of its four producers.

Re: “Why did Selma get the shaft from the Oscars?

@Bill: You have a point, but most directors would vastly prefer to be nominated for Best Director, since the Best Picture award goes to the producer(s).

Do not like the choices that were made. How Carrie Underwood's song, Something In The Water, could be 21 is unbelievable.

Hardee's burgers aren't all that bad for a chain shop. Until there's a Twin Kegs in every zip code, I'd rather stop than than McD's in 37214.

As far as the spot goes, if this is what it takes to popularize grass-fed, so be it. Just cross your fingers it's not GMO alfalfa they're feeding on.

Native here...In the fifties and sixties, Krystal used to serve the best hot chocolate! And they always gave you 2-3 Nabisco sugar wafers with it! yum...

Re: “Five Knives Release Video for 'Sugar'; Blogger Barfs in Own Mouth [Fresh Vid]

Well Seth, at least now the conversation is about music, and not about tying anyone to a rock in the desert. What I'm opposed to is attacking a local band in a visceral, personal way, that almost comes across like online bullying. Don't like a song? Ok, cool. Just don't take the putdowns so far because the musical critiquing gets lost when it's buried in a sea of unnecessary, over the top meanness. Like I said, these guys could be your neighbors, and you just might find out you like them more than you thought you would if you met them or saw them. I'm critical of entertainment too, but the vitriol needs be dialed back some. I said some vitriolic things for laughs about FIR when that slam was posted on Cream, but that was mostly because those guys seem like mean, misogynistic dicks themselves. In this case, the tune just isn't your thing. That may not to elaborate enough to make it an entertaining read, but somewhere between there and the mean putdowns, there's gotta be a happy medium. And nobody ever responded to the song I posted in the youtube clip, which I think is a pretty rockin' little industrial dance tune.

Despite two Oscars, Dianne Wiest struggling to pay her rent. So much for the good that Oscars do for careers.

Re: “I don't have a good reason for not drinking — I have the best reason: I don't want to.

For those few who advise Megan to cave in to peer pressure - that's bull shit. If you're not drinking just to get drunk then you are a sheep and a loser.

But seriously folks, years ago I read a piece about a psychologist who thought alcoholism was not a disease (popular diagnosis at the time, I don't know about now) but a moral weakness. I mulled it over, realized he was right, and because I could no longer use illness as an excuse, I quit drinking. It took about a week to get use to it. Try it, you'll like it.

Re: “Nashville Was No. 9 For Guns In Airports in 2014

Just last week a guy at BNA said "give me all your money or you won't get out of here alive". He didn't have a gun, he was working in the parking booth.

Re: “RIP The Amp

The Amp engineers touted "traffic light optimization" as being a way of maximizing lane usage in the remaining lanes that existed after the Amp was built. If the city is really acting in the best interest of improving transit, they should immediately optimize the timing of all of the city's traffic lights for more efficient traveling. This could be done with minimal time and effort and result in a substantial improvement Nashville transit.

Re: “RIP The Amp

Stephen Hall describes the central element of our strategy quite well. He may be right. But when I ask for closure, I mean effective closure. That will not occur until the MTA withdraws the application from the FTA. The messages sent to the FTA, the arm twisting used to retain any planning money that remains unspent, at last look about $5 million, does not remotely resemble real closure.

Re: “I don't have a good reason for not drinking — I have the best reason: I don't want to.

Well, see, don't take it personally, it's just that imbibers have long suffered oppression at the hands of teetotalers, which continues even today with the so-called War on Drugs. We're of course happy to have you as a sober ally, but you'll have to forgive us if we're slow to trust anyone who won't have even a single drink to demonstrate your comraderie. We've been burned before.

I GOT A RIGHT TO CARRY DEADLY FORCE WITH ME ANYWHERE I WANT BECAUSE I PASSED A TEST THAT SEZ I CAN DO SO. I DON'T NEED A PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION OR ANY TRAINING IN COMBAT SITUATIONS. THE STATE TRUSTS ME TO BE SANE AND TO KNOW WHO TO SHOOT. (EVERYBODY KNOWS YOU SHOOT THE ETHNICS/TURBANED/HOODIED/BLACK PEOPLE FIRST.)

Re: “I don't have a good reason for not drinking — I have the best reason: I don't want to.

I'm not a teetotaler, but I have about 3-4 drinks a year, which is pretty much the same thing for most people. Sometimes "what do you want to drink" is just a passing question and no one cares/notices if the answer is "water," and sometimes people feel judged by the simple fact that you don't want to drink something with alcohol in it, and occasionally people really will try to force you to drink. It's bizarre.

I'm also a vegetarian, and I have encountered more social pressure to eat meat than to drink. Live and let live, y'all.

Good post.
