“Disabled,” eh? Let’s see you slalom down a mountainside without the use of your legs, or go from a wheelchair to a surfboard. The heroes of Harvey Burrell’s documentary are up-and-comers in the field of adaptive sports, overcoming obstacles such as blindness, paralysis and spinal injury to tackle rock-climbing walls, snowy crevasses and pounding waves.
Boston native Burrell, a recent Vanderbilt grad and an alumnus of the Curb Scholars Program that challenges students to chart their own creative curriculum for the public good, was inspired to make the film by his friend Zach Bastian, whose paralysis from the waist down in a dirt-bike accident at age 16 did nothing to quell his appetite for athletic exertion; the doc follows Bastian, Burrell and their friends on a cross-country odyssey.
