On the occasion of our 25th anniversary, the Scene asked 25 of our favorite local artists, painters, designers and printmakers to art up our newspaper boxes and turn them into something uniquely Nashville. Every Monday and Wednesday on Country Life, we'll be highlighting a specific artbox and give you a little insight into each artist's creative practice.
Today's artist is Sheila B, whose art box is dispensing papers at its new location in 12South.
• What was the inspiration behind your design?
Fictionalized chatter overheard in Nashville, and the Scene's big anniversary.
• What materials did you use?
• When you're not making Nashville Scene newspaper boxes, what kind of art do make?
I'm a camera scenic on feature films and a set decorator/art director on commercials, music videos and photo shoots — that world has provided me with great creative opportunity. My personal/public art tends to tell stories with words, imagery and color that are both nostalgic and contemporary. The art I make is pretty much an extension of my personality — I'm not the best in talking about my art, but I am good at talking about most other things.
