Of Mike and Mensch: Mike Myers' Doc Supermensch Opens Tonight at Belcourt

It's unfortunate that Mike Myers wasted the title The Love Guru on that relentlessly juvenile comedy he did back in 2008. The title would've been better suited for his latest, far more entertaining film, a documentary called Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon. I certainly can't think of a better thing to call the man at the front and center, a rascally but generally decent Jewish gentleman who has excelled at being both a caring, enlightened fellow and a legendary poonhound.

Myers drops all the scatological slapstick — but still maintains his flair for energetic kitschiness — to direct this journey through the life of Shep Gordon, a talent manager who began his career selling weed to Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin (who punched Gordon upon their initial meeting) and ended up becoming a game-changing talent manager. From the way Myers frenetically, excitingly splices it together, the dude has hung with more famous people and has been in more amazing situations than Harold Conrad (Google him).

He launched a film company that released arthouse Oscar contenders like Kiss of the Spider Woman. His mission to get acclaimed chefs what they're worth basically set off the "celebrity chef" boom, as he helped culinary stars like Emeril Lagasse and Roger Verge get more respect in the business. ...
