Midnight Movie: Shogun Assassin Tonight at The Belcourt

Midnight Movie: Shogun Assassin
Where: The Belcourt
When: April 4-5

Ever want to see a wooden baby carriage shoot spikes out of its wheels to reap bloody vengeance on the unfortunate men who fall in its path? Well, The Belcourt has great news for you, ya weirdo.

This weekend’s midnight feature at the venerable arthouse is Shogun Assassin, the 1980 compilation of two films based on Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima’s epic 28-volume samurai manga Lone Wolf and Cub and a movie that boasts a body count that’s “impossible to keep count of.” I’m not so sure about that, but the blood splatter from Itto Ogami’s parade of revenge against the men who killed his wife was enough for British censors to ban the film’s release in 1983 (and for GZA to liberally sample it for his solo debut, Liquid Swords).

Shogun Assassin is a bonafide grindhouse classic, and exactly the kind of thing that Space Jam haters should turn out in droves to support.
