Tonight: Transgender Advocate Laverne Cox to Speak at Vanderbilt

Posted By on Wed, Oct 16, 2013 at 6:30 AM

Laverne Cox: Ain't I a Woman
When: 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16
Where: Vanderbilt's Student Life Center Conference Center

In Netflix’s buzz-worthy series Orange Is the New Black, Laverne Cox plays Sophia Burset, a transgender inmate who works as a hairdresser, navigates a complicated relationship with her estranged wife and son, and ultimately wins over all but the porn-stachiest among us. The show has garnered praise for its fully formed, sympathetic view of a transgender — no Jame Gumb psychopaths or campy Hedwigs here — and that’s largely because of Cox’s nuanced portrayal.

Cox, herself a trans woman, is visiting Vanderbilt tonight to speak about her life and her sexual and gender-based identity. It’s a perfect cap on the university’s office of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Intersex Life’s stellar National Coming Out Week programming, which is itself part of LGBT History Month.

Find out more about tonight's event at, and read the piece Cox wrote for The New York Times about her perspective here.
